About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

March 25, 1950 – December 4, 2020 On Friday, December 4, 2020, Donald Ray Atkins of Denton, Texas, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 70. God blessed Don’s life from the beginning. Born six weeks premature in the small Denton hospital on Elm Street, he was sent home with little hope of survival. 10 Reasons Why I’m Biking Only 10 Miles a Day for 10 Days

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

If you’re new here, welcome. If not, you know that I just completed my longest mileage year ever on bicycle and foot. (For that story, see A Devil of a Year: 6,666.66 Miles…) As if that alone weren’t enough reason, I’ve got a life off the bike, you know? So this brief (for a change) post lists some of those other activities and goals. As I wrote in It’s Tapering Time: Biking Less Means Health Gains, “For 2021, I am considering making my #BikeGoals based on time. I walk, do yoga, and write, each for 30 minutes a …

Video: ‘A very safe place for all kids’ | Local bike park organization serves as ‘mentorship’ for youth

Author: Lexi Hazlett | www.kens5.com

SAN ANTONIO — Many kids are tangled up in their devices; phones, tablets, you name it, they’re on it.

Especially in the pandemic, many kids are bored at home glued to the screen. But one local organization is looking to change that, encouraging kids to get outside and bike.

"A few of us came out and wanted to get off our devices, and we asked all our friends to get out and ride just to get off our screens," said Alamo Height Bike Park youth committee leader Weston Cox. His vision of creating a safe, inclusive place for kids to be active has led to more …

Dallas’ Margaret McDermott Bridge could be open to pedestrians, bikes by end of year

By Everton Bailey Jr. | www.dallasnews.com

The Margaret McDermott Bridge could be open for people to walk and bike over the Trinity River by the end of December, authorities say — six years after initially promised.

Work is expected to begin this month on the West Dallas bridge to replace the 196 cables and anchors that connect the bridge’s deck to its two arches, said Tony Hartzel, a state Transportation Department spokesman.

The pedestrian and bike portions of the bridge had …

Sunny Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2021

Day two of 2021 bike rides. Choosing a northerly route I headed out at 11:35 AM on my Lynskey R300 bike on my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. Like yesterday I altered the beginning of the ride so that at the end I wouldn’t ride on the same streets. By the time I completed the ride at 2:27 PM I rode 36.51 miles, about average for this route. So the altered beginning didn’t increase or decrease the distance. In 2020 I bike this route 12 times, 10 time on my Canyon Endurace and 2 times on my Lynskey R300.

The temperatures for today’s bike ride with the historical average of 62 and actual today at the start was 70 and 76 at the finish. Wind was 12 mph from the SW as I began, dropping to 5 mph at the end of the ride. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and windbreaker jacket. Early in the ride my legs were chilly with no leg warmers and shade but after I warmed up the chill wasn’t noticeable. I thought a headwind would make the return to Kingwood difficult but it turned out to not be as hard as I expected thanks to the wind speed decreasing. Also the south bound part of the ride has trees on my right slowing the wind some. Whenever I rode out in the open the wind was challenging.

I built my average speed up to 14.2 mph and held it there until I entered Oakhurst where it dropped to 14.1 mph. It remained there as I rode to Kings Manor where it slowly decreased as I made my way to the finish. The final average speed was 13.9 mph.

Looking at my Strava activity page it announced that my ride was harder than my usual efforts. This ride gained 43 feet in elevation, typical for the Houston area.

Golden Cheetah bike ride summary data shows 49% of the 2:38:41 moving time was in zones 1 and 2 with the balance in zones 3 through 7. More data below.

The Trailist: Salado Creek Greenway now stretches 20 miles from Eisenhower to Fort Sam

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

At the tail end of 2020, San Antonio hit another milestone in the growth of its greenway trail network with the opening of the northernmost leg of the Salado Creek Greenway trail.

The 4 miles of the Salado Creek trail north of Loop 1604 opened in stages from June through Dec. 18, when access began to the final mile that ends at Eisenhower Park. The stretch of paved concrete trail crosses through varied terrain, from …

Warms Up Enough For First Road Bike Ride of 2021

Texbiker.net Posted on January 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 3, 2021

Today’s bike ride initiated my road biking for 2021. I started at 12:36 PM. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and rode 33.31 miles. I altered the route slightly so that the end of the ride would not be on the same streets. This added to the typical mileage for this route of 31 to 32 miles. My road mileage goal for January is 300 miles this ride accounted for 11% so far. Weather can be tough in January so I need to bike whenever it allows. My goal status after 3 days in January.

1-3-2021 Bike Ride Mileage Goals Status

Speaking of weather this is the first day with the temperature above 60 this year. Weather conditions at the start and 3:13 PM ride finish: start 67 (45% humidity, 44.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 10 mph; finish 68 (45% humidity, 45.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 9 mph. I dressed warmly to offset what I consider chilly weather with shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and half finger gloves.

The ride was consistent with my usual efforts according to Strava. I notched a silver medal on the Kings Crossing North segment.
