Mountain Biker Hopes to Elevate Sport Across Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Bike shops across Central Texas are seeing more customers as people try new hobbies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mountain biking is more than just a hobby for Seth Buckner, though. He has been riding for over 10 years and building trails for the past four.

“I quit drinking alcohol in 2017 and I think that’s whenever trail-digging really took off because I was using this as an outlet,” he said.

Smooth Pedaling, Great Average Speed, Summer Lite Weather

One of the best bike rides just happened. Nice, but cool weather, strong legs, solid average speed all came together as I rode my Canyon Endurace bike on what I call the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. I biked 37.54 miles starting off the week in a good position to hit 200 miles for the week if the weather forecast holds. 14 times I biked this route in 2020, 9 on my Canyon Endurace and 5 on my Lynskey R300.

Speaking of the weather, it was cool enough for me to wear a long sleeve jersey (not a thermal one) under a short sleeve one. Whenever I rode in the shade it felt chilly (for me anyway) in the early part of the bike ride. Lots of sun helped warm it up by the time I finished at 2:15 PM. Weather conditions: start 74 (68% humidity, 63 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 7 mph. Finish 82 (60% humidity, 66.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 5 mph. The light breeze contribute to my steady pace no matter which direction I rode.

For the first time in many bike rides my average speed got to 15.1 mph and I held it there from FM 1314 until entering Kingwood near the end of the bike ride. On FM 1314 pedaling into the light wind my speed stayed around 16 to 17 mph. I looked at the power reading a few times and saw 160+ watts. At the end of the ride my average speed came in at 14.7 mph.

I stopped at the Circle K store on FM 1314 and Sorters Road long enough to eat a Clif Bar. My legs were ready when I resumed the ride.

Here is how I stand on my month’s mileage goal. A nice cushion so far but October weather changes.

Vehicle strikes cyclist, leaves him in serious condition

A cyclist was struck by a vehicle in downtown Laredo near the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge, according to the Laredo Fire Department.

The auto-cyclist incident was reported at about 2 a.m. in the 900 block of Iturbide Street. Paramedics encountered a 24-year-old man with multiple injuries.

Crews rendered aid to the man and took him to Laredo Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

200 Mile Week, Great Fall Weather – Biking Kingwood Streets

Wrapping up the first week in October I wanted to bike far enough to not lose ground on my monthly goal. The 1:31 PM start on my Lynskey R300 on the “Kingwood Streets” route would accomplish that. Starting after church allowed the temperature to get in the low 80’s.

The video audio is respectable thanks to my sock wrapped around the GoPro camera. I am surprised and should’ve tried it sooner but I didn’t want to cut up a sock.

Biking 20.39 miles to end the week put the total at 225.17 miles. That is the most miles in a week since the week beginning July 29th when I rode 244.66 miles.

To go along with the week’s numbers, I continue to head towards my 615 mile goal for October with 128.01 miles so far. I am ahead of the pace to just reach it.

10-4-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Earlier this morning the temperature was 55 degrees which looks to be the norm now that fall is here. Thankfully with the sun in full view it warms up enough for me to bike. Weather conditions: start 83 (57% humidity, 66.1 dew point), fair, wind N calm. Finish 83 (54% humidity, 64.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph.

Getting a Strava personal record surprised me. I didn’t know there any segments on the route today.
