About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Biking News March 15th 2020

Heads up for Colorado Bend. Reservations required.

By Bamwa | austinmountainbiking.com

Heads up y’all. The word must have gotten out on this park. Buddy Craig got turned away after driving all the way to Colorado Bend to ride on Sat. Not Covid related. There is now a booth at the top and apparently the park had reached both camping and day use capacity. The new norm I’m guessing is to call ahead and/or reserve your spot before heading out. Rangers told him they had to turn away folks from Colorado and Kansas also. And no there weren’t gonna let him park outside the gates and roll in, even though the trails may have been empty. Just wanted to let the community know. …

First 200+ Mile Biking Week in 2020

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2020

No self quarantine for me. After church today the bike ride began at 11:59 AM and finished at 2:11 PM. Along the route plants bloomed, people walked and other rode their bikes. I chose the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route for variety and biked 27.41 miles. The variety comes from riding the opposite direction on many of the streets I ride each week. The bike: Lynskey R300 Titanium road bike. I am still adjusting to the different gearing from the Canyon Endurace. After warming up and exiting Kingwood I changed to the big ring on the cranks and the middle gear on the rear cassette. With this combination my speed ranged from 16 to 17 mph. My average speed improved once I made this switch.

With the weather staying warm shorts and short sleeve jersey was my attire today. During the bike ride: start 77 (82% humidity, 71.6 dew point), overcast, wind E 6 mph. Finish 82 (68% humidity, 70.1 dew point), overcast, wind E 7 mph. It looks the warm weather will hang around until the weekend.

This is the first week of 200+ miles this year. The last time I biked 200+ miles in a week was October 7th to the 13th, 2019. The week’s summary. One day Zwifting and the rest on the road.

Day 10 – El Paso, TX: A few sprinkles before arriving at hotel

Thursday March 12, 2020, 57 miles (91 km) – Total so far: 478 miles (769 km) Was able to start riding the morning before 8 am. It did not rain over night but expect the forecast is the rain will start around noon. I was only 15 miles from Las Cruces. I headed to Denny’s for breakfast. I stopped at Outdoor Adventures in Las Cruces soon after they opened to get the second spare inner tube which I have been looking for. I rode near New Mexico State University as I made my way back to the route.

Day 11 – El Paso, TX: Rest Day

Friday March 13, 2020 I spent the day updating the journal, doing some bicycle maintenance, and doing laundry. It rained a little here in El Paso. It will take me about three weeks to get across Texas. There are some long stretches with no services so I will need to be prepared. Thanks for following along. Please feel free to the use the Guestbook to leave the questions and comments.

Bike Ride to Ramsey Road – Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on March 14, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 14, 2020

Today’s bike ride weather improved from last Saturday’s by about 30 degrees. The sky was still overcast but I dressed differently as I rode the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route going 37.9 miles. Starting at 10:43 AM the ride lasted 2:45:17 without any rest stops.

The weather while biking: start 75 (82% humidity, 69.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph. Finish 80 (75% humidity, 71.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. My wardrobe consisted of shorts, long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, and biking gloves. This kept me comfortable the whole bike ride, even riding over Lake Houston.

A few other cyclists remained along the route despite my late start. Most were what I call casual riders but serious bikers passed me too. A serious biker wears a helmet and biking clothes versus the casual rider without a helmet and specific clothes.

For some reason the video did not record my comments so I added music.

Sunday I have the potential to ride 200+ miles this week for the first time this year. The total before Sunday stands at 189.43 miles. The weather looks good.
