About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

College Station Tx to Shepard Tx: Is this the last day in Texas?

Tuesday March 10, 2020, 94 miles (151 km) – Total so far: 1,594 miles (2,565 km) After the last few days, I was so ready to be out of Texas. Today though, I was treated to amazing roads and views as I rode through Sam Houston National Forest. What a change scenery! Great roads and beautiful weather always help too. Ended the day in Shepard but slept in Cleveland for the night

Not What I Planned As The Drizzle Fell

Texbiker.net Posted on March 13, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 13, 2020

As I rolled down the driveway to start the bike ride at 11:55 AM the route in my head wasn’t what I ended up riding. In my mind was the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route what I actually rode was the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. Why did I change? Drizzle starting falling not long after I started turning the pedals and didn’t let up until I made the turn back to the south at FM 1485.

As I looked to the south the clouds that held the drizzle looked to have moved more to the north and east which confirmed my decision to alter the route.

Weather during the bike ride: start 79 (76% humidity, 70.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. Finish 81 (70% humidity, 70.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph gusts 18 mph. The pesky wind made it feel cooler than the temperature number. I dressed for that with shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. The headwind as I rode back towards Kingwood accentuated the coolness and made the long sleeve jersey choice a good one. The drizzle was just enough to show up on the GoPro lens at times.

At Community Drive and The Grand Parkway construction has traffic constricted to place beams over the frontage road. Traffic backed up to the exit from Rosewood Funeral Home slowing my riding to the traffic light. I thought about making the turn back south there but all of the traffic made it impossible to get in the left lane so I continued north. The beams over the frontage are not in place yet so that will cut off through traffic at some point.

In the video you can hear a man yell at me to get off the road as I approach FM 1314. He was in a black pickup truck. My response was silence.

Saturday’s weather looks warmer and drier as I plan on a bike ride.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Emergency health declarations are expected to be announced Wednesday for the city of Houston and Harris County in light of the possible first non-travel related coronavirus case in the region.

Short Sleeves Bike Ride To Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on March 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 12, 2020

At first I thought may be my optimism about the temperature over ruled my better judgment but as I biked along the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route I warmed to the idea. Starting a little later than I wanted the Canyon Endurace rolled down the driveway at 12:12 PM to ride 34.8 miles before returning at 2:49 PM.

Weather during the bike ride: start 80 (64% humidity, 66.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 85 (56% humidity, 67.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 14 mph gusts 21 mph. The 80 degrees at the start convinced me to leave the long sleeves at home and celebrate I wore my new Primal Men’s Helix Virtes short sleeve jersey. The only hint of coolness came as I rode over Lake Houston.

At the beginning of the ride the headwind getting to Walden provided resistance. Making my way through Walden put the wind at my back most of the time which I enjoyed. Biking east over Lake Houston a tailwind helped cross quickly and the trees along Fairlake Drive blocked some of the wind. When I got to Huffman on FM 2100 I still thought the wind wasn’t too bad but turning west I changed my mind especially exposed to it over Lake Houston. Once I rode west of the lake along FM 1960 some of the trees and buildings lowered the wind’s effect. Pedaling became easier after making the right turn onto Pinehurst Trail Drive with the now tailwind. Generally I enjoyed a tailwind from that point until the finish.

Friday the forecast lowers the temperature a few degrees so long sleeve may return as I bike.
