About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

October Biking Starts Out In The Sun

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2019

A new month and biking started with sunny weather. Choosing the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I rode 33.21 miles. Wheels rolled at 11:04 AM after I watched stage 1 of The Tour of Croatia live on YouTube.com. October’s goal is 700 miles with an average of 22.6 miles per day. Year to date I am at 6,334 miles, 466 miles away from my goal for the year. If I achieve this month’s goal I will go past the year’s goal by 234 miles.

Weather for the bike ride was just like summer without the heat index so high. When I rode through shade I felt a coolness. According to Space Cit Weather there is a possibility of a “cool front” showing up early next week. The definition of a “cool front” is night time low in the 50’s. I’m not ready for that but it might happen. Weather during today’s bike ride: start 89 (72% humidity, 79.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. Finish 90 (60% humidity, 74.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph.

I noticed my arm sleeves are not quite as snug on my arms as originally. I don’t know if they lost some of their stretch or my arms shrunk. For the price I paid I got my money’s worth even if I need to replace them.

The video of today’s ride covers some clips of the route. The improved GoPro mount removed most of the background noise as the Hero 7 vibrated in yesterday’s video which was a big improvement from the previous mount. I added another strip of Command adhesive with hook and loop on each side of the one piece I installed for yesterday’s ride.

At 6:07 into the video I encountered several tow trucks and Harris County Precinct 4 Constables walking around a house on the right. At first I wasn’t sure what they were doing but getting closer a small SUV sat on the front porch sideways. I could not see how it got there because the shrubs did not look disturbed. One of the deputies had a camera taking pictures. Neighbors from next door stood in the yard. My first thought was the driver had a medical incident and lost control. The video doesn’t show the SUV on the porch.

The rest of the ride was uneventful. I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for water and ice. The wind helped me on the way back to Kingwood and I improved my average speed by .2 mph. I finished the ride at 1:45 PM.

Wednesday weather should repeat today and I plan on biking.

Getting Back on the Bike After a Break: It’s Like Riding a You Know What

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

After the last month and more of too much work and especially of driving a car, I finally managed a day off. Fortunately, on Sunday nights there’s a group bike ride called Bike Curious, about which I’ve previously written. The ride itself is usually pretty mellow, but in this case we had a substitute leader who picked some roads that were a little dicey, hilly and sandy. Still, overall the streets flat and familiar and the pace was slow. It was a good way to ease back into biking. Today I’m a little sore and tired, but the hardest part was …

45 Miles For The Goal Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 30, 2019

I needed those 45 miles to reach 700 miles for September, my goal for the month. Choosing the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route I added the segment north to SH 242 before heading south. Good thing that I did. The ride totaled 45.16 miles putting September at 703.41 miles. During September I biked 20 days out of 30 which is the reason it came down to the last day. Throw in my wife’s health and some nasty weather biking days just didn’t appear.

Today’s ride started at 10:32 AM and finished at 2:31 PM. I tried to start earlier but I installed a new mount for the GoPro camera and I wanted to put a cable tie on the base but it wouldn’t stay in place.

Weather during the bike ride: 89 (77% humidity, 81.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph gusts 22 mph. Finish 91 (64% humidity, 77.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 13 mph. When I rode through Elm Grove Village in Kingwood I saw a dark cloud to the east and the threat of rain but as I made my way to I-69/US59 to the west that dark cluster disappeared and some to the west horizon caught my eye. Nothing came of those and as the ride progressed the clouds thinned out some and no rain.

When I checked the video the rattling noise from the old mount disappeared and the new mount is quieter. Now if I can figure out how to get an external mic working. I think I need the GoPro Hero7 Black model for that.

Riding through Kingwood I saw two trucks picking up flood debris and Creek Shadows Drive in Elm Grove Village the debris was gone. Inside the houses though the work is just beginning.

Tuesday’s weather looks good to start October off. My goal repeats at 700 miles.
