About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

We're working with the City of Austin and Harris County on their bike fleets. (Special shoutout to @SafeCyclist, former longtime BikeTexas staffer and 2016 @BikeLeague Advocate of the Year, now in Harris County.)

Education! A new program is coming with the goal of reaching 3 million Texas schoolchildren (up to 8th grade) in the next two years. That's 80% of that age group. Stay tuned for more info about this program.

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) September 15, 2019

BikeTexas #KidsKup unfortunately has a doubtful future due to lack of sponsors/funding. You can come see us at @Siclovia in San Antonio next month for sure.

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) September 15, 2019

Answer: about 40% of the identified future trails are rideable, but not connected. Funding still to be identified for much of it. 1/3

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) September 15, 2019

First segment likely to be complete is from Fort Worth to Texarkana, mainly due to segments in the area (including Northeast Texas Trail) already being funded. 2/3

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) September 15, 2019

Another segment is in the works starting in Brownsville and coming north. Lots of pieces likely to be started in the next 5 years, but this will be a generational effort that requires commitment from cities, counties, state, etc. 3/3

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) September 15, 2019

Outgoing Board Chair Tom Riddle (yes, really): we want BikeTexas to continue to fight for people who want to ride bikes in Texas for the next 100 years and beyond. And for that, we need a permanent home.

Sunday Bike Ride to The Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on September 15, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 15, 2019

After church I set out on today’s bike ride following what I label the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. I rode 28.13 miles putting the week’s total at 149.16 miles and September now stands at 253.58 miles, 36% of my 700 mile goal. I should be at 50% but due to not riding several days while my wife was ill I am trying to make the shortage. I am 97 miles short of where I should be which I think I can make up if the weather will cooperate. It might rain Tuesday through early Thursday.

Weather while biked today: start 91 (50% humidity, 70.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 9 mph. Finish 93 (47% humidity, 701. dew point), partly cloudy, wind E 12 mph. I thought starting the ride at 12:05 PM would put me in the heat but it wasn’t as hot feeling as I expected. It was only 2 degrees warmer when I finished at 2:21 PM.

I treated this ride as a recovery and rode easier which Strava agreed with.

Nothing out of the ordinary during the ride but maybe the video caught somethings I missed.

Monday I plan on riding and the weather looks favorable. I may ride the Spring Creek Greenway which I have not done since July. This is a longer ride which will help me reach my goal.

Love Bugs, Many Cyclists, Fall Like Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 14, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 14, 2019

Wheels rolled early (for me anyway) at 8:03 AM as I set off on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route to see other bikers. The ride went for 35.41 miles. September now totals 225.45 miles, 32% of the way to my 700 mile goal. Based on the 14 days so far I should be at 327 miles, or 47% of my the goal. I am getting closer but I need to ride more than 24 miles per day to make up the deficit.

Weather during the ride: start 73 (91% humidity, 70.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm. Finish 95 (49% humidity, 72.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 8 mph. I appreciated the arm sleeves at the start for a couple of miles until it warmed up. Fall is in the air though.

Strava tells me this ride was easier than my usual effort. My average speed held at 14.0 mph for most the ride from FM 2100 in Huffman back to Kingwood.

When I stopped on Old Atascoctia Road to shoot some of the videos I spotted the first “love bugs” and they made a cameo appearance in a segment of the video.

Towards the end of the video a group of bikers rode south on W. Lake Houston Parkway while I was stopped on Upper Lake Drive. I almost missed them because I was behind a Jeep. Following the group was a VeloFix van, the first one I saw in Kingwood. I wonder if it covers the area.

The video sums up what I saw on the ride. Lots of bikers once I crossed Lake Houston going east.

I finished the ride at 11:01 AM.

More biking weather on Sunday after church.
