About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2020 Texas MS 150 Route Change

By Ridenfool | austinmountainbiking.com

I am thrilled to report that the 2020 MS 150 will no longer be clogging the road between my house and Rocky Hill on the Sunday of the annual event. It seems that COTA wouldn’t confirm the date and nobody else in Austin wanted it ending there, so, College Station stepped up. The event will now leave on Saturday from BOTH Austin and Houston and will still overnight in La Grange, but, will now go through Somerville to end at Kyle Field in the heart of Aggieland.

Of course, this means I …

In 2023, you could bike from Fort Worth to Dallas. Here’s a look at the trail progress

BY NICHOLAS SAKELARIS | www.star-telegram.com

The decades-long quest to build a seamless pedestrian trail system connecting downtown Fort Worth to downtown Dallas is fully funded and scheduled for completion in 2023, regional mobility planners said.

The roughly 52-mile trail mostly follows the Trinity River, offering a scenic and quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of Metroplex traffic. Fort Worth, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Irving and Dallas have individual trail sections already completed but …

GoPro No Go, Cemetery Visit, Summer Still Here Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 13, 2019

Time to ride to the north on today’s bike ride as I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route and biked 42.26 miles boosting September’s total to 190.03 miles, 27% of the way to my 700 mile goal for the month. To be on track to reach my goal I should be at 43% of the way. More days above 23.3 miles will get me closer.

Weather during the ride: start 87 (72% humidity, 77.1 dew point), fair, wind N 6 mph. Finish 94 (53% humidity, 73.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph. I started at 10:15 AM and finished at 1:38 PM.

The route went by the cemetery where my wife was buried on Tuesday. I stopped and walked to the grave site. It will be 60 to 90 days before the marker is placed. More time to go over our memories while I biked.

No video from today’s ride. When I got ready to go the GoPro battery was at 4%. I also noticed the videos from yesterday’s ride weren’t deleted leaving smaller capacity for new video. Not sure what happened.

Some ride data: (Strava reports the ride was easier than your usual effort.)

  • average heart rate: 127 bps (73%)
  • max heart rate: 151 (86%)
  • average power: 104 watts
  • max power: 474 watts

The wind was favorable on the return from Roman Forest allowing me to get my average speed to 14.0 mph for several miles.

I stopped at the Circle K in Porter at FM 1314 but didn’t buy any drinks because they were empty so I refilled my water bottle and rode to the finish.

Saturday weather continues the summer. I plan on riding.

Time For Reflection Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 12, 2019

After a hard few days I am back on the bike again riding. On Tuesday my wife’s Celebration of Life and burial took place. My two daughters, two grandsons and son-in-law along with many of her friends were here helping and mourning. One thing about biking, you have plenty of time to think and cry.

I rode the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route for a total of 43.35 miles. I am behind on my goal with only 147.8 miles towards my 700 mile goal. I should be at 40% of the way to my goal while I am only at 21%. I will ride some longer rides trying to get back on track. I rolled out the driveway at 9:59 AM and finished at 1:29 PM.

Weather during the ride: start 90 (70% humidity, 79.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph. Finish 96 (48% humidity, 73.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph. While it is still hot it feels different from the heat of a few weeks ago. Fall is only a few days away and I think the weather is changing ever so slightly.

There were numerous United States flags out along the route and I captured a few of them on the ride video probably in memory of the 9/11/2001 attacks. Also a couple of other bikers popped up along the route too.

I plan on riding Friday and the weather looks favorable.
