About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Two trails in Denton are being officially renamed — learn more about who they’re honoring

By Christian McPhate | dentonrc.com

Denton City Council is honoring two people who died with connections to Denton’s trails by renaming trails at South Lakes Park and Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Park.

The two people were Dylan Dorrell, a 17-year-old Guyer High School student, and Jeff LaQuey, a 69-year-old cyclist who helped design and build several trails in Denton.

The “Dylan Dorrell Memorial Trail” will be located at South Lakes Park, while the “Jeff LaQuey Memorial Trail” will be located at the Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Park.

City staffers didn’t have …

Texas MS 150: Two ConocoPhillips employees share why they ride

BY GUS MORGAN | www.conocophillips.com

Andy Flowers and Caroline Barrett will be among the ConocoPhillips employees participating in the Texas MS 150 2024 on April 27-28. While multiple sclerosis (MS), has impacted their lives in different ways, both are united in their fight against this neurological disease. Read on to learn why they ride.

‘You’ve got to have a positive attitude’

It’s been over 27 years, but Andy remembers the day his wife’s mobility took a turn for the worse.

At the time, Andy and his wife, Rena, were living in Houston, about a year after their daughter, Annie, was born.

“I remember coming back to the house — we had a two story — and Annie needed changing, but the supplies were upstairs, and Rena couldn’t climb the stairs to get them. She was very upset.”

That concerning occurrence, in addition to earlier motor-control incidents and other mysterious …

Fort Worth moves forward with bike lane project east of downtown

By Teresa Gubbins | fortworth.culturemap.com

In a win for the bicycle community, Fort Worth is moving forward with a new bike lane project coming to East 1st Street and East 4th Street, east of downtown.

The East Fourth Street/First Street Bike Lane project is significant not only because it increases bicycling options, but also because it uses a new technology that will make it safer.

One existing lane along East 4th Street/East 1st Street will become a bike lane, which will run in both directions in a 2-mile span from I-35W to Haltom Road. They’ll also build in …

Video: Waco ISD encouraging students to ride towards perfect attendance

By: Heather Healy | www.kxxv.com

WACO, Texas — For the past two years, Waco native and Chicago Bear defensive lineman Andrew Billings has had an initiative with J.H. Hines Elementary where every six weeks, two bikes are given out for each grade level (kindergarten-fifth grade) for perfect attendance, or, missing two or less days of school. It’s an incentive that Billings says starts to implement early so these kids have a bright future ahead.

BROADCAST SCRIPT “What kid doesn’t want a bicycle?,” said J.H. Hines Principal Cynthia Wise.

This scene looks a little out of place, as you usually don’t see bikes given out until the holidays, but this giveaway is little different. …

54 MPH Gusting Headwind Biking Historic Battlefield Trail, Brownsville TX

Texbiker.net Posted on February 27, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 27, 2024

For today’s bike ride I drove to the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park south of Los Fresnos. From there I would ride the Battlefield Bike Trail to Brownsville. I knew it would hard pedaling to Brownsville due to the wind advisory. The Jeep was buffeted as I drove south requiring a firm grip on the steering wheel.

Wind advisory from NWS

After going through the entrance I drove to a parking lot near the where the battle took place. Getting my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike ready I rode the paths to various spots of battle. Along the way was artwork beside the path describing some of the scenes. I took photos of them and this is a link to them.

From there I rode to the visitors’ center and then onto the hike and bike trail. I rode north along FM1847 until the trail ended and move to the bike route on the shoulder. I didn’t want to ride farther north and turned around to begin riding south into the very strong wind. The trail crossed under I-169 and the trail surface changed to asphalt, some bumpy parts. A railroad overpass loomed ahead with the climb into the strong wind. The incline wasn’t too steep and I reached the top. Sadly, because of the wind I had to pedal hard to go downhill. Looping under the overpass the bike trail went west for a short time before turning south into that strong wind. Riding south the trail was mostly straight crossing several small streets and major streets. The major streets had crossing lights with buttons. Occasionally houses and trees on my left blocked the wind but it was still hard pedaling. I averaged 8 to 10 mph unless a gust hit me. Around 7.3 miles at Price Road a crew was working the trail across Price Road and I made that my turnaround point. Riding back to where I started was easy and at times I didn’t pedal with the wind moving me along. The railroad overpass I struggled up was almost like a flat road on the ride north.

I started the ride at 11:36 AM and finished at 1:42 PM. Not a fast ride with some of the time taken reading the artwork before getting on the trail. It wasn’t a long distance bike ride but it was a high energy ride due to the wind. Weather: Wind advisory. Start 83 degrees, humidity 63%, dew point 69, fair, wind S 30 mph gusts 54 mph; Finish 84 degrees, humidity 63%, dew point 70, fair, wind S 38 mph gusts 56 mph.

Plan for 100-mile trail from San Antonio to Austin still trekking on

By Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

We checked in on the Great Springs Project.

Ever since the ambitious plan of connecting San Antonio to Austin with a 100-mile trail was announced, hikers, runners, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts have been waiting anxiously for the vision to come to life. And, it will still be some time until that project is completed, but organizers continue to gain ground and trek on.

The Great Springs Project, founded by San Antonio native Deborah Morin, aims to create a hike and bike trail from the Alamo to the Texas State Capitol by connecting four great springs: San Antonio, Comal, San Marcos, and Barton springs. Aside from the recreational side, the non-profit’s objective is to preserve and protect 50,000 acres over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, between San Antonio and Austin. …

It’s been nearly two weeks since William Mize, 65, was hit and killed while he was biking near the Missions

SAN ANTONIO – Veronica Salas’ bike has barely any room left after she’s equipped it with safety gear.

“This is an extra light,” Salas said. “That way they can see me from further away.”

Although she’s been cycling in the city for over a decade, Salas said she’s scared. Just one week ago, William Mize, 65, was biking down South Presa when he was hit and killed by a driver. San Antonio cyclists, like Salas, say they’re heartbroken and now they’re calling for change.

“It makes you very paranoid to get out on your bike and …

Exploring Harlingen’s Trails, Some New Streets With Dog Sprint

Texbiker.net Posted on February 26, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 26, 2024

Today’s bike in Harlingen was a mixture of bike trails and roads. The Bike trails and some of the roads were new to me. It was great exploring the trails after entering from the US77/US83 northbound frontage road at Rangerville Road by the Sames Ford Dealer. I saw the entrance several times driving by and wondered what the trail was like. There wasn’t a lot of information on the internet and the City of Harlingen’s maps were out of date. I started the ride at 11:21 AM from where I’m staying. I debated about changing the tires on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike to the 700x35mm but decided to stick with the carbon rims and 700x28mm tires. This worked out well since the trails were asphalt though not always smooth. I rode east to a park where that trail ended. I didn’t expect the trail to in the river bottom and well below the grade of the surroundings. There a few climbs but nothing severe.

After leaving the trail on the west side of the freeway after coming to a closed section I encountered a large gold dog who chased me for about half a block. Fortunately he barked a lot but didn’t get close enough to bite. I used the Bolt computer map to find Rangerville Road. Earlier I looked on Google maps and saw Dixieland Road would take me north to Spur 54 where I could ride on part of the route from Saturday to Loop 499. There a couple of construction areas but traffic was light. The wind was strong as I rode on Loop 499. I took a new direction at N 25th Street to the west. There wasn’t much slowing the wind and it was hard pedaling. At one of the traffic lights I saw a sign for a trail but I didn’t know where it went so I stayed on N 25th. I took this street to avoid the sections of Loop 499 without a shoulder. N 25th had a shoulder until US77 Sunset Strip. I thought I was close to where I needed to turn west but it was farther. The traffic on US77 Sunset Strip was not too heavy and drivers gave me room. I don’t think this route was much better than Loop 499. I finished at 1:21 PM riding 23.33 miles.

Weather: Start 74 degrees, humidity 82%, dew point 68, wind S 23 mph; Finish 81 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 68, wind S 22 mph gusts 30 mph.
