About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Spring Creek Greenway Law Enforcement?

Nathan G. | www.strava.com

I saw the following post on Facebook this morning. Are they really stopping cyclists using the trail?

”FYI to anyone who uses the Spring Creek Greenway (not to be confused with the Spring Creek Nature Trail in case you’re unaware) for cycling:

Beginning today 8/3/19 and moving forward, the sheriff and constables are policing the Spring Creek Greenway between Dennis Johnston Park, Pundt Park, Carter Park and Jesse Jones Park. They have devices to detect speeds and are issuing tickets for greater than the 10mph or 15mph posted speed limits. They are also monitoring the Dismount Zones at the various stop signs and are issuing tickets if you do not Totally get off your bike and walk it across. This is an ongoing effort to make the trails safe for all.

Spread the word.” …

from a comment: "Randy “Col.” Davis Yes they are! Yesterday (Saturday, August 3 at approximately 9:00am) I personally was stopped by a Deputy Constable at one of the stop signs because I did not come to a complete stop and dismount. The officer was very nice and explained that they had an accident a few days prior where somebody was exceeding the posted speed limit around a curve and ran into another rider breaking the other riders collarbone therefore, the Constable informed them that they are to start writing tickets for not stopping at stop signs or exceeding the speed limit on the path. (Remember my statement that he was very nice? He was! He did not give me a ticket but, clarified that it was a verbal warning.) Safe Riding my fellow peddlers! Make It a GREAT Day! The Col.™"

##The Trailist: Madrone Trail Offers Secluded, Direct Access to Canyon Lake

Roseanna Garza | therivardreport.com

Texas natives aren’t strangers to Canyon Lake, but most have not heard of Madrone Trail, a 7.6-mile point-to-point hike and bike trail that winds its way through a peninsula along the north side of the body of water.

When trying to beat the sweltering triple-digit heat, people aren’t typically looking to add in any cardio other than swimming, but for those in search of a scenic, moderate-to-difficult hike or bike experience where you can …

Texas Bicycling from Twitter

Highland St bike lanes at #UNT are being discussed at Monday's Traffic Safety Commission meeting. Draft designs show a two-way cycletrack with plastic posts every 40 ft, which means most cars and trucks can easily enter and block the bike lanes. pic.twitter.com/3jqozn7MHK

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) August 5, 2019

The reason for spacing the plastic posts so far apart is that UNT is concerned the road will look cluttered. So effectively, the current plan is to NOT protect the bike lane and to design it so cars may continue to block it and force people to ride into oncoming car traffic. pic.twitter.com/KcTefaq6S7

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) August 5, 2019

How do you feel about this draft design? Let the Traffic Safety Commission know by speaking at the meeting: Mon. 8/5 @ 5:30 PM in City Hall work session room (215 E McKinney St). Fill out a speaker's card outside the room and ask who to hand it to. You'll have 3 mins to speak. pic.twitter.com/2MclJkST5s

Rain Threat, New Shorts, GoPro Videos, 200+ Mile Week, Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2019

I was concerned about the weather as I checked the radar before starting today’s bike ride. To the north rain looked threatening but I decided to ride. Setting out at 8:00 AM on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route a couple of new things accompanied me on the ride.

8-3-2019 Bike Ride Weather Radar Before Start

I wore a new pair of Aero Tech Design Men’s Gel Touring shorts in place of my usual Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts. Switching to a different piece of clothing is always a gamble but as the ride progressed these shorts are my new buddy. I will buy some to replace the Bellwether ones.

Second new item was a GoPro Hero7 White. I mounted it on the handlebar to the right of the stem and aimed it to the center. Last night I read up on how to use it but slept and forgot several things like voice commands. I tried to use them but I left a couple of word out and nothing happened. So I resorted to pushing the record button. Since this new I missed a few video opportunities when other cyclists popped up and I forgot to press record. Several videos from the ride.

I need to work on my video editing skills to combine these.

The rain never materialized as I rode back to Kingwood and finished the ride at 10:53 AM

The week biking totaled 216.64 miles with today’s 33.57 miles and August stands at 108.18 miles, 14% of my 800 mile goal. This is the 12th week in a row at 200+ miles. A big thank you to the weather not raining or otherwise complicating reaching my goals.

Video: Kirby soldier’s family gets some justice after hit-and-run suspect sentenced to 10 years in prison

By Patty Santos | www.ksat.com

KIRBY, Texas – A Kirby soldier said his family got some justice Thursday when Judge Jennifer Pena handed the woman who struck him and left him for dead a 10-year prison sentence.

Marisa Ross pleaded no contest to the charge of failure to render aid and asked the judge to decide her sentence.

Ross told the judge she thought she hit a curb in the morning of Aug. 21, 2017.

Matthew Belknap was on his bicycle on his way to work at Brook Army Military Medical Center when Ross hit him. He suffered extensive damage to his body and brain. The crash ended his military career, which was just starting.

"I still say I wish her no ill harm. There’s nothing that can be done about what’s happened to me, and I’m …

The Evolution To The Bicycle Social Network

By: Kayla Graver | bikehouston.org

As an intern at Bike Houston this summer, my appreciation for the bicycle and my connection to the cycling community in Houston has greatly increased…I frequently bike to work with my co-worker, Dr. Inge Ford, and I have greatly enjoyed the sense of freedom in escaping my car’s glass and metal outer shell. Without my “car shell,” I feel more connected to my city and the people around me. Now when I drive, I notice and point out other bicyclists on the road to my car mates, who wonder why this has become such a big …
