About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Counter The High Heat Index With Ice, Water, and Stops Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2019

Each ride this week has been 40+ miles. That is good because yesterday (Thursday) my commitment didn’t allow time to ride. Today I chose the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route and biked 42.7 miles. The week now totals 170.1 miles, setting the stage for Saturday’s bike ride to get the week to 200+ miles. August is advancing to my 800 mile with 278.34 miles so far, 35% of the way there.

The intense heat was evident on today’s bike ride with the heat index at 105 (airport) or 114 (at my home weather station). Weather while I rode: start 94 (60% humidity, 78.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 99 (48% humidity, 75.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. To combat thirst I stopped at the Chevron station just west of Lake Houston and the May Community Center where I found the ice machine thanks to the lady at the front desk. I took a short break at the center to cool some, eat some cheese crackers, and drink cold water. The final stop for water and ice was at McDonald’s in Kingwood’s Town Center.

I started earlier today leaving at 10:46 AM to get in front of the heat but not really. That allowed me to finish at 2:16 PM, more than an hour early compared to the last two rides this week.

Yesterday since I didn’t have time to ride I waxed my chain on the Canyon bike. The last time I waxed it was 6/9/19 over 2,000 miles ago. It was starting to make complaining noises.

The GoPro camera accompanied me on the ride. Below is the video.

I rode the Canyon Endurace CF SLX south and east through Atascocita, Walden, Huffman before going east on FM 1960 and briefly into Liberty County. I don’t ride in Liberty County much and the FM 1960 chip and seal surface doesn’t welcome me either.

No other cyclists were crazy enough to be riding in the heat, at least along my route.

The Luce Bayou extension project work on FM 2100 north of Huffman that had a short detour without a shoulder is gone with a shoulder back in place making for safer riding.

Saturday I will start even earlier to catch other cyclists and avoid the heat.

Cycling advocate brings safety concerns to Austin City Council members

by: Candy Rodriguez | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s been a decade since Katie Deolloz has been behind the wheel. She turned in her family car for a bike and helmet, and for the last year she’s been working on ReHumanize Mobility — a mission to change the way people think and talk.

“I don’t use the word accident, I say crash or collision,” Deolloz said. “If there is a crash and an …

Kilgore by bike proves to be hot and lumpy

by Jerry Painter | www.postregister.com

After nearly 80 miles of bicycling on Saturday, we came to a sign that announced 5 miles of rough gravel road ahead. The three of us were on skinny-tired road bikes and a gravel road looked like as much fun as getting a deep cavity filled in a molar.

“I’m going to get us a ride across this section,” I said.

“How are you going to do that?” a skeptical friend asked. Looking around there was no …

The Forest Service’s Proposed NEPA Changes Could Have a Noticeable Impact on Mountain Bikers

By Matt Miller | www.singletracks.com

The US Forest Service has proposed a series of changes to its current National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations. NEPA guides how the USFS and other agencies make decisions, and requires the agency to conduct Environmental Impact Statements or Environmental Analyses to measure the impact of proposed policies or actions on the immediate environment.

In other words, the USFS has been required for decades to submit lengthy and time-consuming environmental analyses to review potential hazards to the immediate …

Fun With My Strava Bike Ride Titles & Recent Stats

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Ever since I got Strava, the fitness tracking app with social media component, I’ve tried to make the titles of my rides entertaining, or at least descriptive. Sometimes I’ll link to a ride, but I don’t usually list them. However, I’ve been using them because they have been very helpful in writing my book. It’s a memoir of a two-year period wherein I rode many, Many, MANY! miles on the bike. Being able to look back at the collection of Strava rides has been …

Not Too Hot As Long As You Are Moving Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2019

The route choice for today’s bike ride was “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” because I wanted to ride at least 40 miles. I ended up biking 43.33 miles. This jumped this week to 127.46 miles and August to 235.64 miles, 29% of the way to my 800 mile goal. This is the third day in a row at 40+ miles. I have a commitment on Thursday which will restrict or eliminate biking so I need to make up for that in order to ride 200+ miles this week. Maybe I can get a 15 mile ride in after noon.

Today’s weather was hot. This is my idea of what Texas is like in the summer. It reminds me of biking in the HH100 around Wichita Falls. Weather during the bike ride: start 95 (57% humidity, 77.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. Finish 98 (45% humidity, 72.7 dew point), partly cloudy wind SW 6 mph. A couple of people remarked to me when I stopped for ice and water that it was too hot to bike but I said only when I stop. The 11:21 AM start and 3:18 PM finish meant I was out during the time when it gets hot. Back home the AC felt good.

The QuiKStory from my GoPro from today’s bike ride.

No junk man conversation on the ride, just lots of pedaling, heat and water stops. I refilled my bottle two times and stopped at the Circle K at I-69/US59 and Northpark for a break, drinking a 44 oz blue PowerAde and eating some cheese Ritz crackers. Earlier at the New Caney Mobil station after refilling my bottle I ate the first package of Ritz cheese crackers hoping they would power me to the Circle K. Speaking of Circle K, in today’s stage of the Tour of Poland the route went past a Circle K store 3 times in the closing laps.
