About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Long Train, No Flats, Hot Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2019

No flat tires on today’s bike ride. With the rain gone the weather was good for biking today: start 86 (75% humidity, 77 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. Finish 91 (60% humidity, 75 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 10 mph. It fits my definition of Texas summer. I decided to ride the ” Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for 35.71 miles. Wheels rolled at 10:37 AM.

The last time I rode this route was May 21st but the ride was about 1 1/2 miles shorter. Today I added a couple of streets at the beginning for the extra mileage. I have several errands this week in the afternoon so it will be difficult to ride 40+ miles so every mile counts if I am to get to 200+ miles for the week.

It was warm enough to consume 2 water bottles today with a refill at the Huffman Chevron.

I was delayed at the railroad crossing on Old Atascocita Road by a very long freight train arriving a few seconds before I did. I should’ve counted the cars but I am guessing 100+.

The PowerPod still does not seem to be working the way it sued to. I got a response to my forum message at Velocomp with some instructions that might help: do a reset and reinstall a profile from earlier. I will try that later today and see if that makes a difference on Wednesday’s ride.

On the way back to Kingwood I stopped on the Lake Houston causeway and took these photos.

  • Bike Ride Lake Houston West-1
  • Bike Ride Lake Houston West-2
  • Bike Ride Lake Houston West-3

I made good time from the photo shoot finishing the ride at 1:21 PM.

I Nailed It! Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 17, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 17, 2019

I waited until 11:19 AM to start today’s bike ride giving the rain clouds time to move out and the streets to dry. Since I wasn’t planning on riding today based on yesterday’s forecast I chose a shorter route: “Kingwood to FM1960”. I wanted to ride far enough to get June’s total over 500 miles. The 28.29 miles did that moving June to 512.32 miles, 64% of the way to my goal.

The title for today’s post comes from the flat tire I experienced as I rode through Woodridge Forest on a street with houses under construction. About 4.7 miles into the ride I heard this loud noise from my rear tire and quickly stopped to see what happened. Rotating the tire the long rusty nail stood out from the tire. No problem finding where the hole was.

  • Bike Ride Nail Rear Tire-1
  • Bike Ride Nail Rear Tire-2
  • Bike Ride Nail Rear Tire-3

Walking over to a house under construction I made my way up the sidewalk to the front porch where I could lean the Canyon and have a place to sit. I tugged on the nail to position so I could get the tire bead loose without damaging the carbon rim, got my tire levers out, patch kit out, and my pump. The nail was hard to pull out of the tire because it rings on it but I got it loose. Pulling the tube out of the tire I found the pair of holes, roughed up the tube surface, applied some glue from a new patch kit, and waited for it to dry. After the glue was ready I applied the patch over both holes pressing firmly and pushed the tube back in the tire without testing my work. Remounting the tire I pumped up the tire until it felt hard enough, inserted the wheel back in the frame and put all of my tools back where they belonged. During my work I looked up and saw a pole in the front yard with two cameras aimed at the house so someone will be able to watch my repair. Maybe that is why this patching went smoothly and worked the first time. When I got home I used my floor pump to top off both tires to 100 PSI.

I resumed the ride without any problems from the patched tire. As I rode I thought of the streets I would ride on to get the miles I wanted and decided to ride all of the new Atascocita Hike & Bike trail to see where it went north of Kings Park Way.

Riding to the southern trailhead of the trail I start riding north. Ahead of me were two bikers wearing bright orange tops. As we approached Kings Park Way I saw they were two women. The walked across Kings Park Way while I went left to follow the trail to a crossing. It didn’t take me too long to catch up with them as we passed some walkers on the trail. Not long after that I learned where the trail went; as it passed west of Life Time Fitness parking lot it made a u-turn around the end of the drainage ditch and back to Kings Park Way. At the crossing the two ladies waited for traffic as I pulled up behind them and we talked about the trail making a loop and that it would have been nice if it connected to the Life Time Fitness parking lot or Upper Lake Drive and other trails.

The street beside the crossing went the direction I wanted to go and I headed back to Kingwood riding the greenbelt along W. Lake Houston Parkway from Upper Lake Drive to north of Pollo Loco where I crossed W. Lake Houston Parkway and rode the last 2 miles to finish at 1:43 PM.

Tuesday’s weather will be drier and hotter. I plan on biking to take advantage of that.

City decides against bike lanes on Patterson for new bikeway

Wilson | houstreets.com

On Thursday, June 13, the City of Houston Planning Department held a public meeting to present the (nearly) final design choices for the new Patterson Bikeway. The route is designed to provide a link between the White Oak Bayou Trail near the Heights and Buffalo Bayou Park, and will run mostly on Patterson Street.

The route presents some real challenges on what infrastructure to choose, mostly due to the varying widths of the 3 streets that comprise the route. …

Texas gravel championship; 100, 53.5, 28, and 15milers

By bestbike85 | austinmountainbiking.com

Anyone heading up to Rosebud for this on June 29th?

I’m fairly new to gravel riding, but this looks fun. The 100 and 53.5 are chipped races, while the 28 and 15 are tours. I’m debating between the 28 and 53.5 as of now.

Looks like a fun event though, and I sure do love supporting small Texas towns. Only 1.5 hours away from the greater ATX area.

It’s a 7:10am +- 20min start, so possibly go up to temple and get a hotel, or camp in rosebud for $10. Or just leave home for 4:30-4:45am, which I’m not afraid of.

Registration: …
