About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

City Requesting Opinions on Williamson Creek Trail

By cxagent | austinmountainbiking.com

Note that I have been advocating for a trail across all of South Austin along Williamson Creek. This morning I received an email about the Williamson Creek area. Here is a redacted version of the email (redacted remove classified info). I also added the underlines to highlight why I think it would be beneficial to MTB’rs.

BikeHouston opposes the I-45 highway initiative on the basis of safety and connectivity. Our city desperately needs infrastructure investment but we will not accept a project that fundamentally disregards the local street network and puts our most vulnerable road users in danger.

Just heard that September’s Chappell Hill Road Race has been cancelled, apparently due to lack of support from the local community. I guess it was a good 23 year run. Thinking it might be time for a LARGE group ride out there.

Enjoyed Low Humidity and Dew Point Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 13, 2019

Out the door at 10:25 AM to ride the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. The beautiful weather continued for today’s bike ride encouraging me to ride 33.41 miles, moving the week’s total to 160.04 miles and June to 417.53 miles, 52 % of my goal for the month.

Weather during the bike ride: 86 (61% humidity, 71 dew point), fair, wind variable 7 mph. Finish 90 (53% humidity, 70 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 8 mph. I started including the dew point because it reflects the moisture in the air a little differently than the humidity percentage. My biking kit feels comfortable even though the temperature is 90 which the low humidity (for the coastal area) helps foster.

Strava tells me today’s effort is consistent with my usual rides. Nothing wrong with that but I think I need to add some intervals to push the effort up some; maybe using the 12 gear on the rear cassette. Physical data from the ride:

  • average heart rate 132 bps (75% of max)
  • max heart rate 154 bps (88% of of max)
  • average power 117 watts
  • max power 381 watts

I attempted to find the northern trail head of the Atascocita Hike & Bike trail off of W. Lake Houston Parkway on some side streets south of Upper Lake Drive but I didn’t find the entrance. I will ride from Kings Park Way north and see where it takes me.

Traffic is light now that school is out and the ride back into Kingwood and crossing Kingwood Drive is much easier helping to finish the ride at 12:52 PM.

Friday the weather will start looking more like the typical Houston summer: 90+ degrees and higher humidity.

Holding Onto June’s Uncharacteristic Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 12, 2019

The uncharacteristic weather continued for today’s bike ride making for a very pleasant 2 hours and 42 minutes of biking. Starting out at 10:26 AM I headed north on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route riding 36.11 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 81 (61% humidity, 67 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 5 mph. Finish 88 (47% humidity, 65 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 7 mph. The light breeze was welcome news for my legs and not much of an issue even when I rode into the headwind.

Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

I built up my average speed to 14.4 mph holding it there until I was back into Kingwood. Strava told me my bike ride was consistent with your usual efforts.

The construction zone at I-69/US59 and Community Drive is still restricting the lanes so I moved to Loop 494 in Porter.

On the way back home I stopped in Okahurst and took these photos.

  • Bike Ride Oakhurst-2
  • Bike Ride Oakhurst-1
  • Bike Ride Oakhurst-3

The new tires are performing nicely. I have noticed the little dots in the thread to gauge usage. These were long gone on the tires I took off.

I finished the ride at 1:08 PM feeling cool, calm and glad from a nice ride.
