About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zell, co-founder of acclaimed Intelligentsia Coffee, and business partner Chris St. Peters, an attorney, first …

Mixed Bag May

Matt | cyclesinlife.com

May was a mixed bag for my riding. I was sick for almost two weeks and it’s been raining a lot. Lots of rain brings storm watching which I enjoy but also means I haven’t ridden on the dirt in probably a month. I was getting down on my fitness because of those things but then after talking to @the_tiki I was reminded to just take it easy when not well and enjoy some rest. I had a great ride yesterday where I smiled the …

Wienerschnitzel, Grand Texas, 21 MPH Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 29, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 29, 2019

Biking to SH 242 went easier with the help of a 15 mph tailwind. I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route and rode 38.23 miles, pushing May to 811.62 miles, and the week to 116.78 miles. This is the second month this year of 800+ miles.

The weather during the bike ride that started at 11:16 AM: start 84 (75% humidity), overcast, wind S 15 mph. Finish 87 (62% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph gusts 21 mph. The sun stayed behind the clouds most of the ride but the headwind was out in force for the ride south from SH 242. My clothing: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. With the temperature approaching 90 degrees the arm sleeves are still comfortable because they breathe. Salt stains show which means wicking is happening producing some cooling effect.

  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Start
  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

After the effort on yesterday’s slightly longer ride I think today was a recovery ride. The energy level was lower and my average speed only got up to 14.0 mph.

When I made the short ride on SH 242 to the west I went far enough to look at the recently opened Grand Texas amusement park. Being a week day I didn’t see many people there but I read that over 10,000 tickets were sold for the Memorial Day weekend. No impact on my biking so far.

Another first occurred in New Caney when I rode by the newly opened Wienerschnitzel restaurant. It is next door to McDonalds and the first of 15 stores supposed to open in Houston. Interesting that they chose New Caney for their first one. This also didn’t impact my ride.

School is out for the New Caney ISD and not much traffic around the four schools I passed. I finished the ride at 2:13 PM.

With my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike at 10,148 miles I looked at my other gear I track and note their miles too:

  • Catlike Mixino helmet 3,118 miles
  • Sidi Road shoes 16,985 miles
  • Powerpod 14,523 miles
  • Wahoo Elemnt computer 22,150 miles
  • Wahoo TickrFit heart rate monitor 5,316 miles

Thursday weather might include rain but it appears to be spread around so I might be able to ride.

Route 66 West to East

By Keith Misegades and Bill Glass | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 29 – Groom, TX to Erick, TX

Monday May 27, 2019, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,345 miles (2,165 km) Bill says it was a great tailwind day and it was out of the southwest. We were headed east all day long, so we got a good push and were able to cover 75 miles. Overall, the route was a slow descent all day from an elevation of 3250 to about 2000 feet. We are still fighting flats and last evening we spent time patching some tubes and thoroughly checking our tires for debris that could cause a flat. More on that later.

Almost Rain, Rain, No Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 28, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 28, 2019

I set out on the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route at 10:59 AM not knowing that I would encounter what the title says. I chose this route because I haven’t ridden it since July 19th, 2018 and I figured it was time to go there. Also I wanted the miles. I biked 45.59 miles today (it was 45.54 miles on 7/19/2018). This improved May to 773.39 miles. I have a good chance to hit 800+ miles for May.

To explain the title: within the first mile of the ride a few rain drops hit me and the Canyon but because it was a few and the sky was not showing rain I continued on. This repeated many times as the ride progressed. Around the 22 mile point I stopped at Ramsey Road and Old Atascocita Road because the sky looked like rain if I rode south and there is no shelter if it starts. I stopped for 12 minutes and while I waited several cars/pickups came form the south with headlights and wipers on. when a couple of cars came by without wipers running I decided to ride on. Surprisingly the road was dry so I am not sure why those cars had wipers running but I did feel a few drops before I stopped at Peters Road and took these photos. The first one looks to the west without signs of rain while the second looks to the southeast with rain clouds.

  • Bike Ride Ramsey Road Looking West
  • Bike-Ride-Ramsey-Road-Looking-SE

After taking the photos I got on the Canyon and headed towards the threatening clouds. A few more rain drops fell but nothing to be concerned about. Until I was on FM 2100 when around 30.4 miles I looked in my rearview mirror for the first time since exiting from Hare Cook Road. All I could see was a wall of rain gaining on me so I pedaled faster but it still got closer. I started looking for someplace to get out of the rain as the first wave of rain caught me and I spotted a lone picnic table under a shelter on my right at what looked like a closed business. As I approached the driveway to the shelter I hoped there wasn’t a gate or something blocking my path because I was getting wet. There wasn’t but the driveway was loose small gravel which was hard to pedal on. I got within 20 feet of the picnic table, got off the bike and walked under the roof. Sitting on the table edge the rain came down and then stopped. The rain clouds moved north and a few minutes later the sun came out. During this time a pickup truck drove from behind a building about 50 feet east of the shelter. I hoped he wouldn’t tell me to leave since the roads were still wet but instead he asked if needed anything and later as he drove to FM 2100 he rolled down the window and told me if I needed water to go knock on the door he came out of. I told him I was okay, just waiting for the road to dry some and thanked him. I waited several minutes until the spray from passing traffic seemed to disappear and walked to the side of FM 2100 to get ready to ride. An 18 wheeler drove by slowly and I was glad I waited for it to pass because there was a line of vehicles behind him due to his slow speed.

Back on the bike I rode north and the farther I went the drier the road. I stopped at the Fuel Maxx Exxon station for ice and water and ate my Clif Bar I brought. I needed some energy. Somewhat refreshed I mounted the Canyon and rode north. From that point to the finish no more rain drops but the wind was strong. Bellow is the weather at the start and then finish.

Bike Ride Airport Weather Start
Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

The wind did me no favors until I rode north on FM 2100. Riding west on FM 1960 the wind sapped what little energy I had left as it blew across my path. I stopped on Kings River Drive at the pool to rest for a few minutes before tackling the last 6 miles, the legs were having trouble turning the pedals with any energy. The rest helped some and I managed to finish the ride at 3:03 PM. Before putting the Canyon away I hosed off the dirt from the rain and slowly walked inside the house.

Wednesday’s weather looks favorable for biking and I plan on adding to my May mileage. Hopefully the rain stays away.
