About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Trail under First Street Bridge to be transformed with major project

By: Kate Winkle, Julie Karam | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The underside of the Drake Bridge in downtown Austin is dark, with a wide swath of dirt on the trail between the concrete supports and the water and not much else. The city hopes to change that.

Most people will recognize the Drake Bridge as the one supporting cars headed across the river on South First Street. Underneath is a section of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail that people pass through. …

Rest Day in Huston: aches and pains turned into an injury

Thursday May 23, 2019 We took a day off in Huston. Carols had some aches and pains in his knee that may have turned into an injury. We’re hoping a day of rest will help.

Huston

Friday May 24, 2019, 37 miles (60 km) – Total so far: 1,307 miles (2,103 km) Carlos’ knee didn’t get any better. He decided not to continue on. He made arrangement to have his bike boxed up and shipped back home. We rode off to the bike shop and later I rode to the hotel close to the airport we stayed for the night.

Huston to Beaumont

Saturday May 25, 2019, 72 miles (116 km) – Total so far: 1,379 miles (2,219 km) I was up early to say good-bye to Carlos and head off for the day. The road was flat with a slight wind coming from the south/east. It was a long easy ride.

Beaumont to Orange TX

Sunday May 26, 2019, 25 miles (40 km) – Total so far: 1,404 miles (2,260 km) I was a little tired so I decided on a shorter ride today. I’m glad it was an easy ride, flat and no wind. It took no time at all to get to Orange, TX.

Day 28 – Amarillo, TX to Groom, TX

Sunday May 26, 2019, 50 miles (80 km) – Total so far: 1,270 miles (2,044 km) There is not a lot to report today as we were still in the high plains area and the landscape is flattening out even more. The winds were a bit more favorable to us than yesterday and it helped us do the first 33 miles with a normal output of effort. During the last 17 miles, the wind turned to be a bit more directly out of the south so it slowed our progress. …

Orange,TX to Westlake, LA

Monday May 27, 2019, 59 miles (95 km) – Total so far: 1,463 miles (2,354 km) My last day in Texas. I rolled out on this Memorial Day. I was hoping to shave off a couple of miles today by riding on the I-10. First, while leaving Orange, Texas. I couldn’t do it because there was road construction on the highway and little to no shoulder. I headed north and eventually east. It was an easy ride. Flat, a good clean road and a tail wind most of the way. The second time, I made my way southeast toward Westlake with the hopes of crossing over the …

Memorial Day Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 27, 2019

Memorial Day was a great day to start early on today’s bike ride, well early for me at 9:30 AM. I chose the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route which covers streets I ride on other routes but in a different order. I biked 33.07 miles. May now totals 727.9 miles. My Canyon Endurace CF SLX now has 10,064 miles on it.

I can remember when I was in grade school back in the 1950’s there would be a parade on Memorial Day. Many military people would march with flags and bands. Today that is a distant memory with no parades and some people not knowing why we have this holiday.

Not too long after I started the ride a house had three flags in the front yard and I stopped to take this photo. Up to when I stopped and got my phone out the flags were blowing in the wind but then the wind stopped.

Bike ride Memorial Day Hunters Ridge

Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (70% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Finish 90 (56% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph 17 mph gusts. The wind was not too bad compared to previous rides and my rested legs (no bike ride on Sunday) were able to power through. I got my average speed up to 14.0 mph and held it there until I got back into Kingwood and finished the ride at 12:01 PM.

  • average heart rate 128 bps
  • max heart rate 155 bps
  • average power 119 watts
  • max power 429 watts

Tuesday weather forecast is favorable for biking and I plan on adding miles.

The dream was 100 miles when Arnel, Clo, Jed, Juan, Mo and I set out at 6:15 this morning. A few miles in we stopped when Clo noticed his handlebars were loose. I felt good and we powered all the way to Richards 44 miles and more than a few hills with some bite to them before our first rest and replenishment of water.
