About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Uvalde to Hondo TX Sunday May 12, 2019, 46 miles (74 km) – Total so far: 982 miles (1,580 km) It was a later start for me this Sunday morning, Mother’s Day. I went to church a 9:30. It was filled with moms and their family. By the time mass was over and I stopped for breakfast I was off close to noon. Lots of rolling hills. With a warm sun and rolling hills, I was beat by the time I rolled into Hondo. It was early to bed for me that night.

Study Says Painted Bike Lanes Aren’t Enough; Two Close Calls in Two Days Confirm It

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

The study, done by Monash University of cyclists in Victoria, Australia, found that painted bike lanes do not deter car drivers from coming too close to bicycles. And people ride their bikes less when they do not feel safe. The answer is clear: bike lanes must be protected in order to create true safety for bike riders.

Here in Austin, Texas, as in many places around the United States, we’re lucky if we even get those white lines. Which we now know do not work well enough. Nearly getting hit by cars while I was in the bike lane twice in the …

Not Alone Under A Blue Sky Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 14, 2019

More beautiful biking weather today. After watching stage 4 (including the finish unlike yesterday) of the Giro d’Italia I got ready to bike leaving at 11:19 AM. I chose the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route and rode 37.43 miles.

With all of the sun I wore arm sleeves along with a short sleeve jersey and shorts. Weather during the bike ride: start 84 (52% humidity), a few clouds, wind E 12 mph. Finish 86 (44% humidity), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph.

I altered the route slightly to avoid the downed tree on Kingwood Drive by the high school.

Other cyclists were out today. I saw three women cyclists on Pinewood Park in Atascocita. Later at Fairlake Drive and FM 1960 another cyclist pulled up to cross FM 1960 as I made the right turn onto Fairlake.

When I reached Ramsey Road and Old Atascocita Road I took these photos.

The clear blue sky in the background was why I wanted to take the photos. My arm sleeve is visible with the wild pattern.

Riding back from Ramsey Road was easier than getting there with the headwind. I built up my average speed from there to 14.2 mph and held that until the 35 mile point back in Kingwood finishing the ride at 2:11 PM.

Wednesday weather: Sunny. High near 85F. Winds ESE at 5 to 10 mph. Looks like great biking weather.

A Confluence of Beautiful Weather and Fresh Legs Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2019

Today’s bike ride was a confluence of beautiful weather and fresh legs. I didn’t ride yesterday (Sunday) because it was Mother’s Day and my legs appreciated the rest. Taking advantage of the weather and legs I rode the “SR242 – Old Houston Rd – FM1314” route for a total of 45.3 miles boosting May to 305.11 miles, 46% of my 660 mile goal. I started at 11:15 AM after watching the Giro d”Italia stage 3 almost to the finish when the Flobikes/FuboTV died with 3 km to go. Not good but I was able to watch the last k after I got home.

Weather during the bike ride: start 80 (59% humidity), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph. Finish 83 (53% humidity), a few clouds, wind E 8 mph gusts 17 mph. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves for sun protection and to look cool. The arm sleeves stretch and are thick enough the sun cannot penetrate to my skin very much. I thought they might be warm but the fabric breathes well and my arms stayed cool though by the end of the ride there were salt stains on them. Weather at the finish.

Weather at the end of the bike ride

At the 26.4 mile point on Old Houston Road I slowed down to wait for an approaching pickup truck to drive through the water that covered the road. It wasn’t deep but I didn’t want to get the Canyon bike muddy.

The wind wasn’t much of a problem except for the ride SE on FM 1314 at times.

When I made the left turn onto SH 242 my average speed was 14.0 mph and by the time I got back to Kingwood it was up to 14.9 mph but then dropped down to 14.5 mph as I made my way through Kingwood to finish at 2:31 PM.

Tuesday weather may not be quite as good but I plan on biking.
