About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Long Beach, CA to St. Augustine, FL via the southern tier

By Tony Olague | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Del Rio to Uvalde TX Saturday May 11, 2019, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 936 miles (1,506 km)

After a rest day I was off from Del Rio to Uvalde. I rode off under a cloudy sky. I usually take an express break two hours into the ride. Today was no different. Except, when I stopped, I felt a little chill in my body. When I check the temperature, it was 58 degrees. This was a big difference from the temperatures I’ve been riding in, 75-100 degrees. It was another ride that seemed to go by quickly. …

Arlington police seek driver who injured bike officer in hit-and-run near AT&T Stadium

Sara Coello | www.dallasnews.com

Arlington police are searching for a driver who hit a bicycle officer near AT&T Stadium and fled the scene early Sunday.

Two officers, who were on marked bicycles with lights, were crossing Collins Street near the southwest corner of the arena to respond to a call from the west side of the street about 12:45 a.m., police said. …

CRITERIUM & OMNIUM CHAMPIONS CROWNED ON FINAL DAY OF COLLEGIATE ROAD NATIONALS

By: Jackie Tyson | www.usacycling.org

AUGUSTA, GA. — Speed and precision were on display in downtown Augusta on Sunday for the final day of the 2019 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships. Four criterium events decided new national champions for Varsity and Club athletes representing 79 schools from across the country. Accumulated points from three days of racing decided Omnium winners for individuals and teams.

A 1.4-kilometer (0.86-mile) circuit was used for all criterium events, using a four-block section of downtown to circle Augusta Commons. Women raced for 70 minutes, with the Club division starting at 9 a.m. and Varsity division at 10:30 a.m. For the men, champions were decided after 80 minutes of racing, with the Club division taking place at 12:15 p.m. followed by the Varsity division. …

… Ray would also secure the Individual Omnium for Varsity Women. Madeline Bemis (Corona, Calif./Milligan College), the silver medalist in the Road Race and fifth in the Criterium, took second overall in Omnium points. Samantha Runnels (Austin, Texas/Lindenwood University), the bronze medalist in the Road Race and sixth place finisher in the Criterium, was third overall in Omnium points. …

…“I didn’t expect to win today. I just go into every race and try to win,” Brunner said, who also took the Individual Omnium title for Club Men, 237 total points. Last year he was second in Omnium standings. Call finished second with 229 points, just edging out Road Race champion Evan Bausbacher (Richardson, Texas/University of Texas at Austin) by two points. …

… The Men’s Varsity Division faced more spring showers in the afternoon and hit the circuits hard for the full 80 minutes. Attacks came from multiple schools, with 21 riders sorting themselves from the original 68. The final sprint for gold went to James Hilyer (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College). Five other riders finished with the same time, and from that group Scott McGill (Fallston, Md./Brevard College) earned the silver. The bronze went to Hugo Scala Jr. (Dallas, Texas/Marian University). …

CANYON, Texas — More than 400 mountain bikers are in the Texas Panhandle this weekend for the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships.

“The competition at this level is tough,” said veteran mountain biker Roger Williams. “Everybody that’s gonna be here is here for a reason and that reason is pretty much they think they can win the national championship, so you’re talking best in the nation.” …

Marathon Nats (DNF) – Flat

Chase Collins | www.strava.com

Tough day on the bike today. Had a decent start about 11th out of 25 into the trail. About 30 minutes in I crashed in some deep mud and lost some time on the group. I fought back and was probably in like 8th place or so for most of the day but no one in sight in front of me. We went through some super deep mud and slick spots and lost further time sliding all over the place. Didn’t suit my ability very well. Still trucked on and about 35 miles in I burped my tire on a rock and it started losing air to the point where it was rolling on turns and getting super sketch. The course then came out on the road and I rolled back that way. My goal of a top 5 was out the window after my crash and horrible handling in the mud so not too upset about the tire shortening my day. I’ll be back next year if it’s not a total shitshow like today.

Took A Chance On The Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 11, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 11, 2019

I took a chance on biking today and ran into rain before I got to FM 1960. Starting out at 10:08 AM I planned on biking to Huffman but the weather wasn’t very friendly. It was cool and overcast so I dressed to compensate with shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. Weather during the bike ride: start 71 (95% humidity), fog/mist, wind N 6 mph. Finish 71 (96% humidity), light rain, wind N 9 mph.

In the first mile as I rode west on Clear Ridge Drive I weaved among all of the parked cars from the swim meet at the Elm Grove Village pool. I chuckled as I saw all of the wet children and the coolness with the temperature not fazing them. At the corner of Sweet Gum Trail I saw the house at the SE corner. A couple of people were up on what remained of the roof spreading a blue tarp to cover the massive hole where a tree fell smashing the entire roof. I am not sure when this happened since I have been by this spot since the heavy rain last Tuesday. I hope the owners saved some of their belongings. Later as I stopped at Bassingham Drive a very large truck drove by after picking up flood damaged debris in Elm Grove and Sherwood Trails.

Feeling refreshed from not biking yesterday (Friday) my legs powered me along. Before leaving on the ride I checked the weather radar and saw the rain to the south but generally south of I-10 giving me encouragement to ride. At Kingwood Drive the fallen tree blocking the sidewalk was still there so I lifted the Canyon over and cut through the Kingwood High School parking lot to avoid other trees blocking the sidewalk. I started to notice some light mist but hoped it would not get heavier. It stayed about the same as I rode south on W. Lake Houston Parkway with the street damp but not wet enough to spray. But when I got to Kings Parkway the road was wet and I saw rain ahead and made the decision to turn back going left on Kings Parkway. Below is the weather radar at the start of the bike ride.

Weather radar at the start of the bike ride

As I rode back to the north the mist increased but not to the point of rain. Sometimes when I am north of the river the rain will stop but today it kept misting until I was almost home when I finished at 11:33 AM.

After finishing the bike ride I did battle with the garden hose rack before washing the Canyon bike finally resorting to going back to the old hose rack because the new one could not hold the hose and the hose connection leaked.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is Mother’s Day so biking probably will not happen but the rainy weather is supposed to be gone.
