About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Jersey style is part of BP MS150 experience

Joy Sewing | www.houstonchronicle.com

Chris Lauer and his colleagues at Plains All American Pipeline consider themselves rebels in the fight against multiple sclerosis. That’s why their “Star Wars”-inspired team jersey for this year’s BP MS150 reads, “Join the Resistance.”

Some 10,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the 35th annual BP MS150 Houston to Austin Bike Ride on April 27-28, with an overnight stay in La Grange. Total mileage for …

Transportation Planning

houstonbikeplan.org

Transportation Planning Several transportation planning studies and projects are underway in our city to improve mobility, including vehicular, multi-modal, and bicycle-based transportation. Community meetings are currently being held to talk about proposals to create safe, comfortable biking connections in Houston, such as in the Third Ward community. The City of Houston also recently submitted an application to the League of American Bicyclists to renew or improve our bike-friendly community status; we are currently rated as bronze.

Bike to Work Day 2019: Bike To Work Day (BTWD) is Friday, May 17! The annual bike ride and festivities promoting biking as a transportation mode will take place at City Hall. Everyone is invited to participate! Go to the BTWD webpage for event details and to register. Sponsors, volunteers, and riders are sought. For questions, contact bikeways@houstontx.gov.

Bicycle Advisory Committee: The Bike Advisory Committee (BAC) advises and makes recommendations to the Planning Commission and Planning Director on bicycling issues in Houston. The BAC is exploring the possibility of an ordinance prohibiting parking in dedicated on-street bike lanes that are striped, buffered or protected. This item is on the April 24 BAC agenda for discussion and possible action.

Bikeways Pilot Program: An extensive bikeways program is being developed in three pilot areas, according to Transportation Planner Peter Eccles. For example, the Austin Street pilot program is for an area near downtown, and the Patterson Street pilot program is being planned for an area adjacent to Washington Avenue.

CYCLING KNIGHTS CAPTURE BMX NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN TEXAS

www.muknights.com

The Marian University Cycling Team’s BMX squad captured a seventh-straight team title this weekend in DeSoto, TX and earned the program’s forty-fourth national championship.

Windholz was nearly unstoppable down the first straight and carried a lead into almost every race lap throughout the weekend. Junior Bailee Enlow finished second in the women’s standings with several strong performances as well. Junior Kristen Klein was also on the individual podium in fifth. …

28 MPH Gusts and Lots Of Wildflowers Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 8, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 8, 2019

It has been a while since I rode the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route. The last time was June 22, 2018. I waited for the temperature to go up some and finally set out at 11:55 AM. I chose this route to ride close to 40 miles and ended up biking 44.21 miles because I added a loop through Tavola and rode on Railroad Ave. starting at 19.3 miles, south of Splendora.

As I got ready to leave I checked the NWAA app for the local weather and got a foretaste of what it was going to be like biking to Splendora. Wind was from the NW at 13 mph with 22 mph gusts. Since the temperature at the start barely crossed into the 70’s I chose a long sleeve thermal jersey topped with a short sleeve jersey, and bike shorts. The sun broke through the mostly cloudy sky sometimes but my choice of clothing wasn’t too hot as the ride progressed. At the 3:19 PM finish the wind was stronger at 15 mph from the NW and 28 mph gusts which helped me on the ride back from Splendora.

Yesterday (Sunday) a strong rain storm moved through the area keeping me inside off the bike and without electricity for several hours. It didn’t hurt the wildflowers along the route today. I took these photos south of Creekwood Drive.

Surviving the wind I made the turn around at FM 2090 in Splendora moving to the I-69/US59 south bound frontage road. I didn’t too far and stopped to take these photos of more wildflowers.

The ride south back to Kingwood was easier but there were places where I hit the headwind like Valley Ranch Parkway. I improved my average speed once I rode to the south to 14.3 mph and held it there until the 40 mile point as I entered Kings Manor and then into Kingwood where it dropped down 14.1 mph by the finish.

More great weather on Tuesday but maybe not so windy. I will turning the pedals.
