About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Castell Grind! So much flippin’ fun!

Katy McCleskey | www.strava.com

First gravel race! Distance was cut in half due to bad weather. Started too far back and lost time in deep sand for the first 3 miles. Played catch up after that and got 8th out of 52 women. Learned a ton and am ready for the next one!

Peddlers Pass – what to expect as a racer

By DesertNomad | austinmountainbiking.com

Just what is a dirt time trial at Peddlers Pass going to be like as a racer? Read on to find out!

First off, register online to skip that time consuming (and higher priced) process at the event.

Show up well ahead of your race time and pick up your packet. If you are early enough you will have a chance for a sighting lap of the closed-course, 2.7+ mile, 161 corner track. Then if you have time remaining, get a few miles of warming up on the lake trail and make your final preparations. You’ll want to ride light and fast so maybe forgo carrying anything for each of your 15-25 minute laps.

Then it works a lot like Enduro. You will line up with …

It’s Always Earth Day for Bicyclists, but We Need More Butts on Bikes

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Official Earth Day is later this month, but in Austin, Texas the 2019 edition is celebrated April 13. The promotional materials encourage people to not drive (even a Prius?), but rather to, scoot, walk, take public transit, carpool if they must take a car, and of course, bike. They even have a bike valet area. A Dude went last year and enjoyed hanging with other ecologically-minded folks. Because whether you bike 10 miles a week or 100, you’re doing something to …

Knockout Roses and Forecast Let Down Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 12, 2019

The weather forecast let me down today. I got my new wind breaker jacket out of the closet where I expected it would stay until fall, silly me. I got dressed at started the bike ride at 12:17 PM with the temperature at 67 degrees. The forecast said the high would be 82 so that is what let me down. The new Voler Caliber Wind Jacket.

I selected the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 32.92 miles. This pushed my April total to 323.36 miles, 54% of the way to my 600 mile goal.

Before the ride started I took these photos of the Knockout Roses beside our garage. The spring weather produced all of the red blooms.

With the cooler temperatures I dressed for warmth with shorts, a thermal long sleeve jersey, leg warmers, and the Voler wind jacket. Regular biking gloves were warm enough.

I didn’t get to bike yesterday (Thursday) because we got back later than I expected from the medical center. So I figured my legs had time to recover from Wednesday 48+ mile ride but I soon found out the wind overpowered my legs when I was exposed to a headwind. The hardest segment was riding east over Lake Houston on FM 1960. Up to that point I managed to keep my speed close to 15 mph but the wide open spaces over the water dropped that to below 12 mph. It wasn’t until I made the right turn onto Fairlake Drive that some relief allowed my legs to recover some.

Riding north on FM 2100 gave me time to recover some and the ride west on FM 1960 was much easier with the tailwind helping. Winding through Atascocita the streets moved me from tailwind to headwind but I was able to keep my speed at 15 mph or above.

Back in Kingwood the trees and buildings held the wind back some. I avoided the school traffic and finished the ride at 2:48 PM.

Saturday I planned on riding in Liberty, TX, but the weather looks very wet. I will check the forecast later tonight to see if it changes.

Ride of Silence to Ghost Bike for Jessica Rae Saathoff: ¡Presente!

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

I’ve titled this sad post the same as the ride for Anthony John Diaz, because it was very similar. A bunch of people show up at a pre-arranged place, they chat, there are some announcements, and the ride begins without people speaking unless needed for safety. The group rides around East Austin with leaders stopping car traffic or the riders as needed, and eventually it arrives at the scene of the victim’s death. There is a bike painted all white: a ghost bike. Somber words are …

Spider Mountain Sticky Icky Improvements

By WhoAmI | austinmountainbiking.com

Here’s a video of a test ride of a small change we made on Sticky Icky at Spider Mountain. The trail rose up quite a bit at this point and led to a small root drop and was sloughing off the downhill side, so we gave it a full bench with a slight rise leading to a boot-able roller. We also touched up the catch berm below this, re-cut the bench after this, and built up the LH berm. …

The Dallas City Council on Wednesday approved spending around $7.1 million to finally, one day, open the hike-and-bike sections of the $115 million Margaret McDermott Bridge.

But several council members hope someone else will foot the bill.
