About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2 major Fort Worth transportation initiatives begin in February

By Mark Fadden | communityimpact.com

Beginning in February, Fort Worth officials will start work on two different initiatives—the Vision Zero action plan and “Moving a Million”—poised to shape the city’s fundamental policies regarding transportation infrastructure and traffic safety.

The backstory

According to the Vision Zero website, 42,000 people are killed in transportation-related accidents on U.S. roadways every year. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy and equitable mobility, the website states.

The website states the program was first implemented in Sweden in the 1990s. Initially spreading across Europe, it is now gaining traction in American cities. …

… The city’s “Moving a Million” initiative is a comprehensive long-range document, which the news release states will be used by transportation planners to build a safe and effective multimodal network for the following types of transit:

Walking
Bikes
Automobiles
Micromobility
Freight and mass transit

Both initiatives are slated to be completed by fall or winter 2025, according to the news release.

Showing the love: Boyd PD gives out bike to help student make it to schoolFree Access

By Austin Jackson | www.wcmessenger.com

Candy, flowers and cards are typical gifts exchanged on Valentine’s Day. The Boyd Police Department went in a different direction when it came to a local student who was struggling to get to school.

Officer Jason Gross with the Boyd Police Department made a deal with a local Boyd ISD student who kept missing school this school year. The department held up their end of the bargain, surprising the student with a new bike.

In a social media post shared Wednesday, Boyd PD said that Gross met the student earlier this school year after his mother asked the officer to talk to him about his absences. The student had missed an alarming amount of school.

While discussing the issue, the student said he didn’t have the energy to walk several blocks to school. So Gross had an idea.

The officer asked if the student had a bike, which would allow him to get to school quicker and with less effort. …

Day 33:Shepherd to Silsbee: Underestimated our mileage and played dodge the dog ALL DAY LONG

Tuesday February 13, 2024, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,070 miles (1,722 km) First off, we use a lot of things to plan. ACA routes, Google, paper maps, other people’s journals. Today we thought what the heck, let’s use ACA and the journals we’ve read.

So we pulled out the map, thought we’d ride up to Goodrich from Shepherd and join there. Day should be 65 miles and flat according to the journals. No problem.

Well the first problem, we left after 10. We felt very relaxed at Shepherds Sanctuary so we lingered and then we talked to the owner Peach for a while. That’s were we found out the journals might be wrong.

She said the ACA route used to come to the sanctuary but not now. We were using the newest map that was just updated. So our day was going to longer.

75 miles is a lot especially when traveling in the winter and …

Day 34:Silsbee to Dequincy: Off route, free catfish, and we are living life on the bayou

Wednesday February 14, 2024, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,125 miles (1,811 km) We poured over maps this morning. Where are we going next? We want to end up in Lafayette so we know we will go off route again but when should we deviate?

Today we deviated to head towards Dequincy, LA instead of Merryville, LA. Why because then we can check out Lake Charles too. So true to rambling, we went our own way. And hey, it worked out just great.

Every town was a ville today. Mauriceville, Deweyville, Swampville ( that’s not really a town ?)

We rode through a repaving project and traveled two lane …

Wanted To Ride Outside, Bundled Against Wind Chill. Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on February 14, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2024

I wanted to ride outside today enough that I bundled up more than I prefer due to the cool temperature and wind. The sun was out which helped. Bundling up meant leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and wind jacket. Since it is Wednesday I rode to the north with the wind from the SE. The Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route took about 9 miles to get to the US59 north frontage road after riding through several Kingwood Villages. This was my second ride on this route in February and 2024. I rolled out at 12:08 PM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. Most of the ride was with the wind until I made the u-turn under US59 at Caney Creek. The climb up from the underpass into the wind took extra effort. My legs might still be recovering from the 2271 feet of climbing I did on Monday in the Tour de Zwift. There were a few places on the ride back to Kingwood when I wasn’t going into the wind and they were appreciated. I finished at 2:37 PM chilled from the wind and 66 degrees.

Start 63 degrees, humidity 54%, dew point 46.0, partly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph; Finish 66 degrees, humidity 47%, dew point 45.6, partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph gusts 18 mph.

The audio in the video improved from Sunday but still needs work. I adjusted the gain on my wireless mics. I’ll see the results on the next ride.

Austin City Council approves code to expand bike parking spaces

Olivia Dilley | thedailytexan.com

Austin City Council approved an update to the city’s bike parking code which will expand the amount of bike parking spaces available to cyclists.

The new code simplifies regulations for developments, making it easier for businesses and residential developers to determine how much bike parking they must provide, said Spencer Schumacher, a commissioner for the Urban Transportation Commission.

“The rules are clearer. It’s a lot easier for (businesses) to comply (and) for the city to check compliance on the rules,” Schumacher said. “The (previous) bike parking requirements were …

Whitmire shouldn’t reverse Turner’s support of Metro, cyclists, pedestrians (Editorial)

By The Editorial Board | www.houstonchronicle.com

A man on a bike uses the cross walk as he and traffic pass one of several barriers recently installed on Houston Avenue at Washington Avenue on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024, in Houston. Firefighters and police officers have complained about the barriers, and curbs installed in December. Houston Public Works has plans to remove the barriers.Karen Warren/Staff photographer

Barely a month into his first term as Houston mayor, Sylvester Turner laid out a bold vision for regional transportation, calling for a “paradigm shift” with less emphasis on serving the needs of people in cars with empty passenger seats.

A little more than a month into Mayor John Whitmire’s first term, his first moves suggest a reverse in course.

Turner’s changes were incremental in the first place. Paradigms — especially those involving large government agencies vulnerable to political pressures and financial constraints — don’t shift easily. From 2016 to 2020, 78% of Harris County workers drove alone to their jobs; the figure dropped to 76.5% from 2017-2021, due in large part to …

New park in Cy-Fair opens with connective trail, 100-acre space for bike riders and hikers

By Ralph Green | www.houstonchronicle.com

A new park opened last month in Cy-Fair, becoming the 70th park in Harris County Precinct 3.

The park, which cost about $3 million, is south of Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve in the northwest Houston area. It includes a pedestrian trail that runs west under the highway to the D Bradley McWilliams YMCA and continues to the precinct’s 100 Acre Wood Preserve.

Commissioner Tom Ramsey said the precinct has made parks a high priority and this new park will cater to the needs of bike riders. …

Training Camp

1/20/2024

Training Camp Day 1: We drove to Fayetsville TX (the middle of no where) at ~ 5:30AM for training camp day 1! The day consisted of stations for different skills like riding in pace lines, emergency braking, etc. There was a lot of alumni members (even members of the 2012/2013 team) there helping us out and external coaches who ran the drills/ biked with us. All of the people helping us were so kind and really made the process enjoyable. Most entertaining part was the station for emergency braking where we biked in a line and then one of the coaches would yell (POTHOLE) and you would have to instantly respond. Almost fell a couple of times but luckily the coaches caught me before doing so. The 2nd part of the day was a ~25 mile ride through the city. Some of the hills where annoying during this ride but it wasnt anything crazy. I was pretty nervous at first but an alum member was with me and also an external coach and they made the ride pretty enjoyable. One of the …

1/25/2024 – 35 miles – Walnut + Extension

1/25/2024 – 35 miles – Walnut + Extension

Today’s ride made me realize how much growth I have made. My first time doing this route I thought it was nearly impossible and I felt so exhausted throughout it. Ofcourse the hills where challenging but I feel like it wasnt nearly as bad as the first time and I found myself a lot less tired. This ride made me realize that I have made progress and I am really proud of myself. I am still getting used to doing rides and then going to class/ going about my day. After biking I feel exhausted and I have been finding it hard to talk to people and do work. Just feel really spaced out.

Bee Caves: bee caves feb 3, 7, and 10th

Such a hard route. biking through this part of austin is crazy (it is close to where the 360 bridge is). Def very challenging and exauhsting. I feel like I spaced out so much for this ride its hard to remember. When people ask me how bee caves is I just feel like it is not a part of my memory. But during the fed 10th ride I got my first flat, had no idea what to do, but luckily my team helped me out or else I would have been stranded.

8 Sprints, Not Too Much Climbing – Zwift Watopia Coast Crusher

Texbiker.net Posted on February 13, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 13, 2024

Crush the sprints along this flat route through the diverse coasts of Watopia. Lead-in 5.1 miles and 117 feet elevation gain. Total route 26.4 miles and 682 feet elevation gain. I wasn’t sure how my legs would respond for this ride after all of the climbing yesterday. They did well but were tired by the end of the ride. Two Strava top results. Experimented using a wireless mic instead of the webcam mic: failed to pick up my audio. Used an ANT+ dongle in place of Bluetooth to reduce the lost connections: failed, had more lost connections.
