About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

58 Degrees Not Keeping Me Indoors Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 20, 2019 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 20, 2019

After seven days off the bike I finally got back on and rode 36.82 miles today on the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. The main reason for not riding was my sinus got messed up from something. Added to that the weather decided to turn lousy for most of the time too. Monday the weather was better but I wasn’t. Despite the time off I am getting closer to my 345 mile goal for February with 265.9 miles so far which leaves 79.1 miles to go.

Saturday I will ride my first organized ride of the year so it was important to get today’s ride under my pedals.

Normally my weather guideline is don’t ride if it is below 60 degrees. It was below that threshold when I rolled down the driveway at 12:37 PM and I dressed accordingly. After getting better no need for a relapse. So I wore shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, short sleeve jersey (should’ve been a long sleeve one), windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. At first I was chilly especially when I got in the shade and some wind got me. But after 15 to 20 minutes body heat increased and I didn’t think about the chill too much. Weather during the bike ride: start 58 (64% humidity), a few clouds, wind N 9 mph. Finish 64 (48% humidity), a few clouds, wind N 7 mph. After raining most of Tuesday seeing the sun was a pick me up.

Nothing out of the ordinary along the route. When I got to Ramsey Road I rode north to the first bridge and took these photos. As I took them another cyclist approached from the south and made the right hand turn onto Old Atascocita Road. He was too far away to get his attention and I didn’t catch up to him when I started biking back to FM 2100. I did see another biker about 1/2 mile east of FM 2100 on Old Atascocita Road as I rode to FM 2100 and we exchanged hellos.

Riding north on FM 2100 the chilly headwind reminded me it isn’t spring yet. The wind let up some as I transitioned onto FM 1960 for the ride west and I picked up my speed. On the west side of Lake Houston I rode into Atascocita and wound through the streets among the houses.

I was late enough to catch some of the school traffic at Kingwood Drive but a couple of cars let me cross when the traffic stopped and I finished the ride at 3:32 PM.

Thursday’s forecast: High 55 F, 80% Precip. / 0.18 in, Thunderstorms. High around 55F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. No biking on Thursday if this is true.
