About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Report suggests we need new sidewalks and bike lanes near schools

By: Yoojin Cho | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Austin is taking its first step to make children’s walks to school safer. Wednesday, Austin’s Safe Routes to School Program released its first of 10 reports.

"It’s looking at it through the lens of parents and trying to address those barriers that are preventing them from walking or biking to school," said Amir Emamian, Program Manager.

Emamian explained that the program used money from the 2016 Mobility Bond and conducted studies in all 10 Austin City Council districts. The …

Ride of Silence to Ghost Bike for Anthony John Diaz: ¡Presente!

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.wordpress.com

Today was a somber occasion, the ride to remember Anthony John Diaz, run over by a bus on January 28th. I’ve been on a few of these now and it both causes me literal grief, not to mention that another senseless, needless, horrible death of a person on a bike who was doing the right thing simply pisses me off. For some reason, a city bus driver ran over and killed a person riding a …

Video: Cyclists voice concern over roadside rumble strips

By Camille Connor | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, TX (TNN) – Rumble strips alert drivers when they veer off the road or into oncoming traffic. It is a safety measure.

TxDot’s Public Information officer Adele Lewis said they are especially necessary on roads like FM 171.

“This is a rural road, and in the state of Texas, 58% of lane departure or road departure wrecks ending in a death or serious injury happen on roads just like FM 171,” Lewis said.

Right now, TxDot has contracts going on in their 9 districts to …

by Landan Kuhlmann | theleadernews.com

Feb. 28 is the deadline for public input on three proposed bike trail projects that would have a direct impact on cyclists and pedestrians in the area, most notably the Heights.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Emily Black said there have been ongoing conversations about multiple local projects – a Memorial Park Pedestrian connector, a Heights/MKT trail connector and a Northwest Transit Center connector – since a neighborhood group reached out to TxDOT with ideas in early …

Suzi Rumohr: Denton cannot afford to sacrifice safety along West Hickory Street

By Suzi Rumohr | www.dentonrc.com

In the United States, we have developed a car dependency. We spend trillions of dollars to accommodate personal vehicles, dedicate enormous swaths of land to store them and design roads so dangerous to walk on that it feels necessary to use a car to travel even a few blocks.

This car dependency has contributed to increased health problems due to physical inactivity, increased air pollution and carbon emissions, 37,000 traffic fatalities in 2017, financial burdens for low-income families who must …

By: Curtis Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KFDX/KJTL) – Folks in downtown now have a new place to park their rides! Officials installed another bike rack in the downtown area, and it has a personal meaning for some of the donors.

One of the donors Terry Caves wanted to do something special for his wife Teresa. His first gift ever to her was a bicycle, so years later he saw it fitting to have a bike rack installed in her name—something that Executive Director of Downtown Wichita Falls Development Jana Schmader said …

Chilly Dog Sprint, Completed Bridge Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 13, 2019

Tuesday was a no bike ride day because I messed around with tech stuff. Today I got on the bike and rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for 33.41 miles boosting February to 229.11 miles, leaving 116 miles to reach my February goal. Before starting at 12:28 PM I watched stage 2 of the Tour de Columbia. It was much warmer there.

Part of the reason for starting later was my waiting for the temperature to warm up a couple of degrees above 60. I dressed for the wind chill with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey topped with a windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. Even with the blue sky it was chilly for me. Weather during the bike ride: start 63 (39% humidity), a few clouds, wind 5 mph. Finish 65 (48% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 6 mph gusts 16 mph.

The ride went well until I got on Hikers Trail Drive in Walden. As I passed a car parked on my left I saw a medium size overweight white dog standing at the edge of the street. As soon as he spotted me he ran towards me barking and growling wanting to bite me. I sped up but the dog somehow managed to speed up too getting close to my left foot as I pedaled snapping but he didn’t stay with for long, maybe 50 feet, before he gave up. I think this is the first dog sprint of 2019.

Leaving Walden I back to FM 1960 to continue to the east. I expected the bridge work to be done on Old Atascocita Road and I got an early indication of this when the warning signs at FM 1960 and Fairlake Drive were gone. Rounding the corner at Fairlake and Old Atascocita Road the newly finished bridge was open for traffic. Photos of the new bridge.

Now my usual routes going this way can return to normal.

At FM 2100 I rode east for a short distance to add to the ride and then turned back to FM 2100 to ride to Huffman. The wind finally wasn’t trying to slow me down and at FM 1960 I went west. The wind generally didn’t slow me down but it was much better when I turned right onto Atascocita Shores Drive. It was still chilly but the wind was blocked some as the street goes up and down plus the house and trees helped too.

The ride north along W. Lake Houston Parkway again put the wind behind me and I made good time to Kingwood Drive. I chose to cross at the traffic light since school traffic was heavy. After crossing I finished the ride at 3:07 PM.

The forecast for Thursday calls for warmer temperatures in the 70’s but no rain. Bike riding looks favorable.

4,000 Miles Bicycled on Sophie, My Fairdale Weekender Archer

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.wordpress.com

For some riders, 4,000 miles is not alot. For me, it’s no joke, and a milestone worth noting. I’ve had Sophie the Fairdale Weekender Archer bicycle for two years this month, actually. Memorial Ride for Anthony John Diaz 2019-02-13

dougmc | bicycleaustin.info

What happened (if you missed it).

Facebook event

Feb 13th, wheels down at 4:30 PM, 412 Comal Street, Plaza Saltillo

First and foremost, this is a silent ride. Please keep talking to a minimum and please no music.

Our plan is to start at Plaza Saltillo at 4:30 (sharp – don’t be late) and slowly make our way to the crash site arriving at 5pm. At the crash site, we would like to say a few kind words and remind everyone that cycling is a valid form of transportation and that cyclists are vulnerable road users. We do not want to be angry or hostile. The point is to show solidarity and let others know that crashes like this are unacceptable.

The ride will continue and end at the Cap Metro facilities on E. 5th street. Once we arrive we would like to say some words about how safety should be the most important issue to bus drivers, rather than speeding down a street to make a green light, or stay on schedule.
