About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Trilla Cook | ourtribune.com 12/26/2018 edition

When University of Texas student Annie Velasco found an opportunity to ride her bike all the way from Austin to Alaska in the Texas4000 to raise awareness for cancer, she took it!

Annie’s father, Oscar Velasco, was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, and recently his health took a turn for the worse. It was beginning to look like her father would not get to witness Annie’s crossing the finish line in his honor.

Velasco and his family have lived in Kingwood for 15 years, where he worked as a service manager for a medical equipment company. His disease has worsened over time and, in 2016, the family learned that despite being in constant treatments, cancer had spread to his brain and bones. …

Day 17: End of map #4 of 7, Navasota, Texas: Headwind and crosswind for most of the day.

Monday December 24, 2018, 94 miles (152 km) – Total so far: 1,824 miles (2,936 km)

I didn’t sleep very well last night due to a very late camper arrival, train noise, and truck noise. The hills for the last 16 miles of the ride through state parks were rough on my legs.

Today covered a new segment of Texas – oil wells and oil drilling rigs. …

Day 18: Christmas ride from Navasota, Texas to Silsbee, Texas: Made up for some of the milage I didn’t get yesterday.

Tuesday December 25, 2018, 141 miles (227 km) – Total so far: 1,965 miles (3,163 km)

Today has been a very long day of bicycling. I started out earlier than normal and didn’t stop for lunch or dinner because all the restaurants were closed. Only the gas stations were open.

The scenery in Texas changed again – most of the day today was pine trees and forest.

There was a slight breeze of a headwind during …

Season for Caring: New bikes, new table for Haroun family this Christmas

By Nicole Villalpando | www.statesman.com

Ahmed Haroun pedals his new bike fast. So fast it makes a staccato sound as the instruction guide temporarily tacked onto the back wheel hits the spokes with each revolution. Joy spreads across his face.

The 8-year-old was one of four kids in the Statesman Season for Caring program who received new bikes from Waste Connections employees.

On Friday, Waste Connections’ Steve Shannon came to the Haroun family home to deliver the new bikes to Ahmed and his sisters Hajar, 14, and Sara, 3. Their brother Mohamed, 17, already had a bike. …
