About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Good readers rewarded with bikes in FBISD

By Karen Zurawski | www.chron.com

CYCLE volunteers delivered bicycles for second-graders at Goodman Elementary School in Fort Bend Independent School District. It is one of 10 elementary schools in Fort Bend ISD that participated this year in the program. CYCLE — Changing Young Children’s Lives Through Education — offers bicycles as an incentive to encourage youngsters to improve their reading skills.

Youngsters cycling through their Fort Bend neighborhoods may seem to be a more common sight this winter break. …

Sharon Kimble-Kramchack took over for our former volunteer accountant, Rick Hecksel, in June. She helps out with bookkeeping and general accounting duties.

“It’s no secret that BikeHouston relies on volunteers to keep us going,” says Bowen Roberts, volunteer coordinator. “We really …

I have a theory that life is a yearning for mobility.

It begins in infancy, when we first swivel our heads, opening up our world 180 degrees. Then on to crawling, walking, and running.

Finally, emulating humankind, we discover the wheel. It might be a wagon or a scooter or tricycle. …

The Invisible or Utility Bicyclist: An Ignored Population

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.wordpress.com

Tonight as I was out dutifully putting in some miles to finish up my yearly goal, I encountered a man stopped in East Austin, near downtown.  He was working on his bicycle, and observing the unwritten code of bike riders, I stopped to ask if I might help. He had a screw driver and was adjusting his rear reflector while enjoying an adult beverage.  He was also worried about his …

Serial thief arrested after allegedly stealing bike

By Josh Ninke | www.kbtx.com

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) – Bryan police say they caught a man with a history of thefts after he stole a bicycle from someone’s home.

Authorities say 25-year-old Jordan Tullous took a bike from an open carport on North Brewer Drive Monday afternoon. The victim caught the theft on their surveillance system.

Police recognized Tullous and found him less than two miles from the home half an hour later. He reportedly admitted to hiding the bike on West 29th Street.

Tullous was arrested and charged with theft. He’s been charged with the same crime five other times in Brazos County.

North Texas wants to keep up the momentum in 2019 as a tech testing ground

by Melissa Repko | www.dallasnews.com

Dallas’ geographic diversity, population growth and eager local officials have made the region a popular testing ground for the tech of Silicon Valley startups and Fortune 500 companies.

Dockless bike-share companies have continued to use Dallas as a laboratory. This year, new options were added to the mix: electric scooters from California-based Bird and Razor and from Lime, which also offers bikes and electric bikes for rent. The number of bikes dropped as the city of Dallas approved new rules and …

County funds turning TSU campus and vicinity into living lab for biking and transit options

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Amar Mohite, Harris County Precinct 1 director of planning and infrastructure, left and Commissioner Rodney Ellis, talk about plans for a new entrance for Texas Southern University that is more pedestrian and cyclist friendly outside the Houston campus on Nov. 19.

Standing on the campus of Texas Southern University on a cloudy day as construction equipment building a new library sat sinking in the mud, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis looked around and saw Seville, Spain.

Or at least what could be Seville, Ellis said, with a little sprucing up, some bike lanes and a little encouragement from the community. As water pools in potholes at the corner of Wheeler and Sampson and a trash truck splashes through, Ellis even sees a little Venice, Italy. …

Before you rush out and get a tattoo when you turn pro racer read this article.

Athletes Don’t Own Their Tattoos

by  Alex Tabarrok | marginalrevolution.com

NYTimes: Any creative illustration “fixed in a tangible medium” is eligible for copyright, and, according to the United States Copyright Office, that includes the ink displayed on someone’s skin. What many people don’t realize, legal experts said, is that the copyright is inherently owned by the tattoo artist, not the person with the tattoos.

Some tattoo artists have sold their rights to firms which are now suing video game producers who depict the tattoos on the players likenesses:

The company Solid Oak Sketches obtained the copyrights for five tattoos on three basketball players — including the portrait and area code on Mr. James — before suing in 2016 because they were used in the NBA 2K series.

…Before filing its lawsuit, Solid Oak sought $819,500 for past infringement and proposed a $1.14 million deal for future use of the tattoos. …

How I Bicycled 22 Miles in a Thunderstorm and Tornado Watch (Shark-Free)

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.wordpress.com

After two days out of town and off the bike for the holidays with family, I returned to Austin ready to get back to bidness.  I needed to take my computer into the shop and to retrieve my mail, so I had two destinations. There was some light rain but the temperature was in the high 60’s, not much wind.  A little rain never hurt anybody (except the Wicked Witch of the West), so I suited up and headed out. So it was not all storm all the time. But soon …
