About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Buffalo Soldiers program brings history to life with bike ride

By Nadia Tamez-Robledo | www.brownsvilleherald.com

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department took the iconic Buffalo Soldiers out of the history books and into Resaca de la Palma State Park on Saturday during the Iron Riders Christmas Dash. The 8-mile bike ride from Rancho Viejo to the park dropped participants off to an awaiting replica of a 1896 Buffalo Soldier encampment and the park’s holiday celebration. …

Dozens of people are getting free refurbished bikes courtesy of Dallas County inmates

Julieta Chiquillo | www.dallasnews.com

Dallas County inmate Eliza Zabaleta gushes when Roy Love, a detention services officer, places a small pink bicycle over a repair stand. Disney princesses adorn the frame, which reads “Magnificent Beauty” in capital letters.

“Aw!” says Zabaleta, picturing her little niece one day riding a bike like this one. “This is cute.”

The pink handlebars are faded, and the tires with heart-shaped grooves look more gray than the original white. Zabaleta — who was jailed in July on an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charge — studies the bike and starts her work, spraying the body with a cleaning solution and scrubbing it until it shines. …

Day 15, Lost Maples Campground to Johnson City, TX: Lots of rolling hills all day.
Saturday December 22, 2018, 128 miles (206 km) – Total so far: 1,623 miles (2,612 km)
The deer in Texas are crazy. I am seeing a carcass at least one per mile and twice this evening they tried to crash into me. The first deer assassination attempt was a group of 6 of 7 deer. Some of them ran behind me and two were right in front of me. I believe the brakes, solid red taillights, and headlight that doesn’t shine upward saved me from a hit. The second time was a single deer. Texas needs more hunters!
It was very warm today 80°F! High clouds …

Day16: Johnson City, Texas to Buescher State Park, Texas: More rolling hills and a crosswind
Sunday December 23, 2018, 107 miles (172 km) – Total so far: 1,730 miles (2,784 km)
Today was a good day for a bike ride! The wind shifted directions and was blowing from the north so I didn’t have a tailwind for most of the riding today. The first 3 hours of riding we’re difficult because I pushed to hard yesterday – the legs felt like Jello. I saw my first Armadillo but it was flat and not especially photogenic.
I was able to meet up with Dwayne from home in …

Humble beginnings: The story of Richardson Bike Mart

By Chelsea Peters | communityimpact.co

Walking into Richardson Bike Mart feels more like stumbling into a cyclist’s fever dream. Clusters of bicycles line the walls, the floor and even hang from the ceiling.

At any given time owner and President Woody Smith said at least 1,000 bicycles are ready for purchase. Combine that with the roughly 500 warehoused bikes waiting to be assembled and another 1,500 housed at nearby locations, and what results is a companywide inventory that rivals shops nationally and perhaps even globally, Smith said. …

Austin to New Orleans via Southern Tier 2018

By MJ O’Neal | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Eastern Texas Hill Country
Saturday December 8, 2018, 170 miles (274 km) – Total so far: 170 miles (274 km)
In my week of riding around Austin for Uber Eats and through my own exploration of the city, it was very apparent to me that this part of Texas at least, is not flat. I was very glad to have already been riding the long, drifting hills around Austin, but going three times the distance, with 50 pounds extra weight would prove to be a real test of my endurance. Four days ago now is when I left my Austin Warmshowers host Randy’s house. He had initially inspired me to look at doing the Southern Tier for he had done the trip to New Orleans last spring with some friends and had all good things to say about it. It was an uphill battle preparing for this trip though since my front rack no longer worked, so I got a …

Louisiana Livin’

Sunday December 9, 2018, 380 miles (612 km) – Total so far: 550 miles (885 km)
Day 5- 12/8: Willis, TX- Shepherd, TX (38 miles) Well it was quite the dreary day leaving my hosts house in Willis. The conditions were adequate enough for riding though, so I just threw my new Frog Toggs rain jacket that I was gifted on and started the day at 11am. This area of Texas had very dense vegetation matter, aptly called the thicket forest. The rain kept getting more and more intense, and the rather solemn atmosphere was confirmed with a huge 50 car funeral procession that I let pass me when leaving the Stephen F. Austin National Forest. In the town of Cold Spring I could tell that I was already running a bit behind but I got some lunch in town anyways to warm up a bit after being in the cold rains. The 20+ mile distances between these …

Sunday December 16, 2018, 132 miles (212 km) – Total so far: 915 miles (1,473 km)
Today was another long day but I had quite a bit of downhill and tailwind. Chili peppers, cotton and pecans were the story all day!

Day 10, El Paso, Texas to Allamoore, Texas: Great day with warmth and tailwinds!
Monday December 17, 2018, 124 miles (200 km) – Total so far: 1,040 miles (1,673 km)
The day didn’t start off very well, I had two low pressure tires and I found goathead thorns in both tires and tubes. I am patching tubes tonight after blogging!

Allamoore, TX to Davis Mountains State Park: Huge tailwind until the map said to turn right.
Tuesday December 18, 2018, 100 miles (161 km) – Total so far: 1,139 miles (1,834 km)
Today was another great day of cycling. I had a gusting tailwind for the first 50 miles but part of those miles were on I-10 and I got a flat rear tire. The little tiny invisible wires seem to be kicked up by the front tire and imbed in the rear tire. There were 6 wires imbedded in the rear tire but only 2 caused leaks.
The route turned right and I had a gusting crosswind for the next …

Davis Mountain State Park to Dryden, Texas: Big tailwind and lots of downhill on a beautiful sunny day!
Wednesday December 19, 2018, 135 miles (218 km) – Total so far: 1,410 miles (2,269 km)
This was a great day for bicycling in Texas! I had a strong tailwind for most of the day. The big task for the day was to fix the rear derailleur cable and cable housing that quit working yesterday. I stopped at the Bikeman bike shop in Alpine. John, the owner, let me use his tools to install fresh cable housing for the rear derailleur. The brand …

Thursday December 20, 2018, 133 miles (215 km) – Total so far: 1,543 miles (2,484 km)
This was another long travel day. I didn’t see a cloud all day. It gets cold right away when the sun goes down and it is hard to get out of my down sleeping bag in the morning!
The bike and ride were great today. This will be the last day with an overall downhill route for a while. I started the fourth of the …

#BlueSanta wasn’t quite done delivering toys this year. Assistant Chief @wrichards102 brought Lorenzo his first bike, thanks to a private citizen donation. Merry Christmas from RRPD! pic.twitter.com/a9UyYZR1nG

Merry Christmas to the cycling community! Be sure and ride safe. Dallas Critical Mass will be on December 28th starting from Dallas Farmers Market. Will be leaving out at 8:00 PM. It will be a great time to show your new bike, gear, lights, etc. that you got for Christmas!
