About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Not This Cool Since April Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 2, 2018 by Rick AnkrumNovember 2, 2018

First bike ride in November was cooler than I prefer. When I got up this morning my home weather station showed 44 degrees, way below my tolerance level. So I waited for the sun to come up and warm up the day. At 11:56 am I rolled out on the bike ride. Weather during the bike ride: start 65 (57% humidity), fair, wind 4 mph. Finish 69 (44% humidity), a few clouds, wind W 8 mph. The clear blue sky beckoned and I followed on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for a distance of 31.31 miles. I dressed to offset the coolness with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket, and full finger gloves. This kept me warm but the wind still had a bite to it.

With the cooler weather this month and daylight savings time ending Sunday biking will be more of a challenge. Thankfully my mileage goal for November is lower at 360 miles.

No rest stop during the ride and no other cyclists crossed my route. I finished the ride at 2:20 pm.

Saturday’s weather will be slightly warmer. I plan on riding.

Tactical Urbanism

City of Houston Planning Department | www.houstontx.gov

Planning Department staff members joined in the October 7 Sunday Streets program in Near Northside to feature a constructed tactical urbanism demonstration of a parking protected bike lane on Irvington Blvd. Tactical urbanism is a term used to describe low-cost, temporary changes to the built environment of public places, intended to model improvements, such as street right-of-way modifications, in local neighborhoods.

This particular design – a first for Houston – is planned for neighboring streets Hardy and Elysian, and the display helped residents get acquainted with the new configuration before …

Out of Control

By St. John Barned-Smith and Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Fourth in an occasional series

Doug Baysinger remembers everything up to the crash.

One moment he and his wife were about five miles into a long weekend bike ride from their home in Sugar Land west into the Texas prairie. The next moment, he was sliding along the pavement.

“It felt like five minutes, but I’m sure it was just a few seconds,” he said.

It was two years ago in July. Baysinger had been vaulted from his bike by a red Toyota Camry, driven by a drowsy woman who drifted into the group of about 10 riders. Bikes …

Houston drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians don’t share well, even though the signs tell them that’s the law.

Volunteer Spotlight: Robert Haynes

BikeHouston.org

Have you seen the interactive Build 50 Challenge map on our website? It was built by our volunteer Robert Haynes. This is a great example of a BikeHouston member using their professional skills to make Houston safer for people on bikes. We often see Robert at our events, but this time we had an electronic conversation.

How did you get involved with BikeHouston?

I’ve been a volunteer of BikeHouston since I first moved to Houston over three years ago. I saw the BikeHouston advocacy tent during a promotional event at Whole Foods and signed up for a family membership on the spot. I got involved with volunteering for BikeHouston because of the passion that everyone in the organization has for …

Reflections On The Ramble From The Executive Director

BikeHouston.org

My first Moonlight Ramble was in 1987. In addition to staying up until 4 a.m., I remember the rest stop on Post Oak Boulevard at Westheimer and riding through Memorial Park back to downtown roughly following the Houston Marathon route. I saw areas in Houston that are familiar today but were unfamiliar to me as a new Houstonian. This year, the full moon and pre-ride party at Saint Arnold Brewing Company provided a perfect setting for a fun and memorable experience through Houston’s diverse neighborhoods – at night.

The figure eight course’s central rest stop at …

Over the course of the last three months, cyclists from all over Texas have made the trek to San Antonio on the last Sunday of each month to compete in the Midnight Crits. The word crit is short for criterium, a bicycle race that takes place in a circuit road race.

These riders, ranging from 18 to 37-years-old, take part in …

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2018

Looks like October ends with rain bringing my bike rides to a close.
