About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

At 85, Schmid remains a pillar of Waco cycling

By PHILLIP ERICKSEN | www.wacotrib.com

Fred Schmid’s cycling career is similar to the trails he rides: quiet and challenging.

Schmid, a Waco resident, is recognized as one of the best cyclists in the country in his age range. At 85, he has won almost 30 national championships and his fair share of state and world titles. He often rides throughout central Texas when he is not competing.

“The beauty about cycling is, with what seems like a minimal effort, you can …

October Mileage Goal Passed Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 28, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 28, 2018

Sunny weather continued for today’s bike ride on the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route. I biked 26.79 miles which put me over my 700 mile goal for October at 707 miles. I reached the goal on Atascocita Shores Drive as I passed Shoregrove Drive on the way back to Kingwood. The ride started at 12:25 pm and finished at 2:25 pm. Year to date I am at 7,326.7 miles. With two months left I should add to that total. It is possible that this year will be the most miles ridden in a year.

Weather during the bike ride: start 79 (68% humidity), fair, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 82 (53% humidity), fair, wind SW 8 mph. No need to wear extra jerseys today. Shorts and a short sleeve jersey were perfect in this weather.

No rest stop needed today.

The great weather could last through Wednesday allowing me to add more miles to October.

We got a visit from one of our Channel Legends, Joe Nganga, all the way from Dallas, Texas. Turns out Joe is quite a climber and fit right in with the Team RR guys. Cool morning at the start about 10 Celsius. Paul, Alan and I showed up in the Veloharmony Colors along with Joe. Epic ride today with Mo and his maniacs. We did a slight variation to our route and went west of the Sam Houston National Forest. We were able to get some clips. Hope they capture the spirit of the ride.

Thinking Cap Route Planning Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 27, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 27, 2018

I didn’t want to ride to the south and trying to think of some variety I decided to ride the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. In order to get more miles in than the usual version of this route I put my thinking cap on trying to remember how it went. The last time I biked these same streets was April 23rd, 2017. I rode it between then and now but not the 29.52 miles like today. The other times the miles were 27 or less. Typically I ride this route on Sunday when I want a shorter bike ride.

Leaving at 11:04 am I waited until it warmed up to 70 degrees. The forecast called for a high of 80+. I changed my wardrobe from yesterday wearing shorts, long sleeve jersey, windbreaker jacket (with venting), and regular gloves. Weather during the bike ride: start 70 (67% humidity), a few clouds, wind SW 4 mph. Finish 78 (60% humidity), a few clouds, wind SW 6 mph. The wispy clouds from Friday left and a bright blue sky took their place. Home weather at the start and finish of the bike ride.

Home Weather Start PWS
Home Weather Finish PWS

Starting weather is on the left. By the end of the ride I was over dressed and the jacket and jersey were soaked.

The light wind made for a good ride pace. I built the overall average speed up to 14.2 mph and held it until the finish of the bike ride at 1:13 pm. The return streets into Kingwood don’t have all of the stops and starts I usually have so I keep the speed up.

In Valley Ranch I stopped at the community center and took these photos of the flowers.

Bike Ride Valley Ranch CC-2

This was about 21 miles into the ride. From here I headed south to the I-69/US59 frontage road with about 8 miles left to the finish. At Northpark Drive I made the u-turn back north and Adams Road east to Woodridge Forest and then into Kingwood. No rest stop today. I hurried to get back for the UC vs SMU football game at 2:30 pm. Go Bearcats!!

More great weather tomorrow (Sunday). I am only 19.8 miles from my October goal of 700 miles.
