About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

October on Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 3, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 3, 2018

Today’s bike ride took me to the Spring Creek Greenway. Since May I ride the greenway once a month for variety and to see what is going on. Since I started biking the greenway it is not open all of the way with a barrier at the western end and I wanted to check to see if that changed. I left home at 11:00 am, a little later than I planned. I thought about riding on Monday but the weather turned wet.

Weather during today’s bike ride: start 85 (80% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph. Finish 87 (74% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. I got a few sprinkles around mile 7 but they quickly disappeared.

What didn’t disappear was a fraud alert text message from my bank around mile 7 too. I replied and then spent a few minutes talking with them on the phone to resolve the problem. Not what I planned for during the ride.

Arriving at the I-69/US59 trail entrance I usually see another cyclist or two before getting to Jesse Jones Park but not today. In fact I only saw 7 cyclists during the time I rode on the greenway. I think I saw more joggers and walkers than cyclists.

Around mile 9 on the greenway riding west a crew worked on a culvert and I rode off the trail after they signaled me to come ahead. On the way back they were gone. They used a backhoe and dump truck.

After turning around at the barrier I stopped at Dennis Johnston Park to refill my water bottle for the ride back to Jesse Jones Park. I took these photos at the park.

Bike Ride Dennis Johnston Park-2

The pond in the background has a fountain and I saw some boys fishing there on previous rides. I didn’t use the water fountain in the second photo because it wasn’t cold but went to the building by the tool road.

Back on the Greenway riding east I stopped for these photos.

The brown water is from the recent rains in September and this month. The clouds just keep hanging around.

Back at Jesse Jones Park I stopped for about 25 minutes to rest and eat a Clif Bar. After eating I took this photo.

I went to the restroom to refill my water bottle with cold water from the drinking fountain and then resumed the ride back to the trail entrance at I-69/US59. When I got there looking south some dark clouds hung in the sky but no rain fell on me during the ride. Back home at 3:11 pm I saw evidence that it rained while I was gone but the streets were dry.

Thursday weather forecast looks favorable for biking.

No Rain As Wind Whips Across Grass Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 2, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 2, 2018

No rain during today’s bike ride. In fact it was sunny and warm while I rode the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route for 43.23 miles. I added a couple of extra streets to get the mileage to that level in order to almost reach 10% of my 700 mile goal for October with 69.46 miles so far. I left at 11:32 am after watching a race in Belgium, Binche-Chimay-Binche Mémorial Frank Vandenbroucke. Earlier the temperature dipped below 70 when I first got up. But the forecast said to expect upper 80’s.

Speaking of miles, my Canyon bike now shows 6037 miles since I bought it and started riding February 27th of this year. My year to date mileage is 6670 miles with the difference on other bikes. I am 130 miles away from reaching my goal for the year.

Weather during the bike ride: start 88 (77% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph. Finish 88 (66% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph.

The 13 mph wind made riding to the east and south difficult and the hardest section was on Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100 where the land is flat with nothing to break the wind. Turning right onto Ramsey Road didn’t help and I fought the wind all the way to Stroker Road. At 23.3 miles into the ride I stopped and took these two photos.

Bike Ride Ramsey Road
Bike Ride Ramsey Road-2

The first photo looks east and you can see nothing to block the wind except the grass. The second photo looks to the south where the road goes with some trees where Stroker Road meets Ramsey Road. On Old Atascocita Road my power readings showed 200 to 300 watts almost all the way with similar numbers on Ramsey Road. The gate enters a grass farm field. To the west it looks the same.

Bicycling on Stroker Road put the wind behind me for most of the rest of the bike ride.

At the 30 mile point I stopped at the Huffman Chevron to rest, eat and refill my water bottle. I stayed about 25 minutes before setting off to the west on FM 1960. Sitting in the shade felt good and the wind that caused me trouble now helped cool me off.

Back in Kingwood my arrival coincided with Kingwood High School traffic so I stayed on the greenbelt along W. Lake Houston Parkway to cross Kingwood Drive and then onto the side streets to finish the bike ride at 3:13 pm. No need to wash the bike today!

Wednesday’s weather looks like a repeat of today. I plan on biking.
