About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Texas woman chooses Ohio to kick off bike ride for opioid addiction awareness

Vanessa Richardson | www.wlwt.com

CLEVES, Ohio — Jeannette Krupp has an active six days ahead of her. She’s biking 400 miles to raise awareness about opioid addiction.

“I kept saying, ‘Why isn’t anyone doing anything about this? I see people dying every weekend, why isn’t anyone doing something?’ And then I realized, sometimes you have to be the one to do it,” said Krupp.

Krupp is a strength and conditioning coach in Texas. When she started researching, she saw that opioid use is an epidemic in Ohio, so she chose the Buckeye state as her …

Parker: Service and Sacrifice

by State Representative Tan Parker | www.crosstimbersgazette.com

There have been many times in my life that I have missed loved one’s birthdays, spent holidays at the office, worked overtime, and lost sleep due to my role as a businessman and a legislator. Thankfully, these are just symptoms of seasonal sacrifice; seasons that I am sure all of us are familiar with. For our law enforcement officials, however, all of the above, is standard protocol. …

The TXFallenPD Tribute is an annual bike race that first began in 2008 when police officers united to honor fallen Texas officers. Since 2008, this event has grown from a symbolic tradition into a community fundraising event that includes a 5K, a civilian bike race, and a police obstacle course race. However, no matter how much this event grows, the focus will forever remain the same. The proceeds from the …

From The Director: Notes From NOLA

BikeHouston.org

New Orleans is building 75-miles of low-stress bicycle infrastructure over the next two years. That made NOLA a great backdrop for the 2018 Walk, Bike, Places Conference held there in September.

I learned a lot, and it was a great opportunity to compare notes with our friends at BikeEasy, NOLA’s nonprofit organization advocating for people on bikes. The conference brought together planners, transportation engineers, public health professionals, elected officials, community leaders, placemakers and professional walking and bicycling advocates together to …

10 Dangerous Intersections: Houston Asks The Feds For Help

BikeHouston.org

On Bike to Work Day in May 2018 following a series of bicyclist fatalities, Mayor Turner directed BikeHouston and the City to work together to identify and improve 10 intersections considered dangerous.

BikeHouston answered the call. We engaged our members and other advocates to help identify intersections that posed the greatest threat to safety. After compiling a list of more than 30 intersections the Mayor’s office approved 12 to investigate.

The city installed a temporary camera at each of the …

Damp Start to October Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2018

The plan was to start October biking with a 40+ mile ride but that changed around 7 miles into the bike ride when it started raining. Before that point I stopped in Woodridge Forest and took these photos of the line of threatening clouds to the south.

After taking the photos at 5 miles into the ride I thought the clouds would not move north very fast and biking to the north on the planned route to Roman Forest where the sky included tiny patches of blue. But the rain caught me and I spotted a new house for sale with a porch and stopped there for about 40 minutes waiting for the rain to leave. It never left so I got back on the Canyon bike, changed my route to something shorter and rode towards Porter.

On the service road riding north the light rain continued so I stopped at the Valero station and waited there about 15 minutes while the blue sky to the southwest slowly move towards my location. Still the light rain continued and I changed the route to “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” planning to ride enough to reach the daily amount for my monthly goal of 700 miles. I actually biked 26.23 miles, slightly more than the minimum. of 22.6 miles per day.

Making the u-turn at Community Drive I now saw the blue sky to the southwest and hoped it moved my way. Biking through Valley Ranch the streets were wet but the light rain decreased some. At FM 1314 the rain still fell but when I got into Oakhurst it appeared to stop. Once I made my way to Kings Manor the streets looked dry except close to the curb but the east wind required more pedaling effort. After starting at 10:40 am I finished the bike ride 1:34 pm with the sun finally arriving.

I washed off the Canyon bike and went inside to clean up. Supposedly the weather on Tuesday will be drier and warmer. I am ready. Maybe I can ride the 40+ miles then.
