About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pay-to-ride bikes bring alternative transportation to campus

Texas State and the City of San Marcos launched a dock-less bike-share program Sept. 20 in partnership with VeoRide.

The gold bikes can be found around town brandishing a Bobcat logo and can be unlocked by downloading the VeoRide app and scanning each bike’s unique QR code. The bikes can then be dropped off at any predetermined location throughout San Marcos and the Texas State campus.

Cost-wise, the bikes run for 15 minutes for every 50 cents paid through the app but day passes can …

Late Start, Gray Clouds, Rain Avoided Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 26, 2018

This morning when I got up bicycling today did not look promising. A light rain was coming down and the streets were wet but then it stopped. Looking at the weather radar the patch of rain was gone and I thought maybe it will clear off and i can go riding. About 10:30 am it looked like a good time to ride but it started raining even though the radar didn’t show the rain. So I worked on a project until the sky cleared some and left on the ride at 12:52 pm. Due to the later start I chose a short route; “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch”. I rode 25.31 miles.

Biking to the north the sky didn’t look too bad but in my rearview mirror the clouds were dark gray, maybe enhanced by my sunglasses. At Community Drive I made the turn back to the south and began to wonder if I would get home dry. I picked up the pace glad that I picked a shorter route so as not to get too far from home. Making my way to Valley Ranch Parkway my concerns held steady and back at the I-69/US59 service road I took these photos of where I was headed.

Bike Ride US59 Clouds-2

Rather than take a chance of getting wet I stayed on the service road all the way to Kingwood Drive without stopping to refill my water bottle. A couple of times during that section I felt a few rain drops but not enough to get me wet. As I rode my mind thought of places I could go to in case the rain started but I didn’t need to do that. Going through Kings Manor a few more drops hit me but still no real rain. The rain held off and I finished the bike ride at 2:45 pm without getting rained on.

With today’s miles I only need 26 more to reach my 700 mile goal for September. The weather is doing its best to slow my riding down but I will keep at it. As of now the chance of rain on Thursday is 50% so biking is possible.

Dan Solomon | www.texasmonthly.com

On September 6, nineteen-year-old David Gobellan was hit by a car while riding his bicycle down a poorly-lit stretch of road on his way home from the gym. Four days later, he died in the hospital. Gobellan’s death isn’t the first fatal bike accident in the Rio Grande Valley this year, but it’s the first to lead to a viral discussion. Gobellan’s friend, nineteen-year-old Lauren Pitts, was attempting to address the Mercedes city commission about factors she believed contributed to …

This article was originally published by Urban Edge.

Houstonians don’t walk, and only the brave few bike for recreation. That’s the refrain we hear although it couldn’t be further from the truth. One way we know? Crash data. Over the last five years, vehicles crashed into more than 8,700 people walking and biking across Houston based on LINK Houston’s analysis of Texas Department of Transportation data. In other words, there are thousands of people walking and biking on Houston’s streets. …

From Threatening Clouds to Blue Sky Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 25, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 25, 2018

When I set out on today’s bike ride at 11:20 am (later than I planned, still dealing with computer problems) the sky looked threatening in almost every direction. Initially I wanted to ride longer but after looking at the sky I chose the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route and biked 37.12 miles. I am now 59 miles away from my September goal of 700 miles. With 5 potential biking days left I should reach my goal but the rain could be a problem.

Speaking of rain, around 2 miles into the bike ride sprinkles began to fall but I pressed on because it didn’t increase and maybe I would ride out of it. After about 1/2 a mile the sprinkles disappeared but the clouds still looked like rain. Weather during the bike ride: start 84 (73% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. Finish 87 (71% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. It feels like fall and the cloud cover and backtracking cool front from the other day play a part.

As the ride progressed I started seeing some blue sky and the clouds changed from gray to white. Maybe that 13 mph wind pushed the gray clouds away? Bicycling east on Old Atascocita Road in front of me I saw gray clouds white in mirror I saw blue sky. At the turn around at Ramsey Road I took these photos.

Bike Ride Ramsey Road
Bike Ride Ramsey Road-2

A big change in the sky from when I started.

After enjoying the view I got back on the Canyon bike and rode west on Old Atascocita Road to FM 2100. Arriving in Huffman I made a stop at the Chevron station to refill my water and ice. I was there about 10 minutes and then began the ride to the west. That 13 mph SE wind helped some but not as much as I hoped for. When I rode east on Old Atascocita Road the headwind was strong enough that my watts showed close to 300 or more for about 2 1/2 miles east of FM 2100. Turning north at Atascocita Shores Drive the wind started helping more since it was mostly at my back or I was out of its path among houses and trees.

The ride back into Kingwood followed W. Lake Houston Parkway north and then on to side streets to finish at 2:15 pm.

Not sure about the weather on Wednesday but I plan on biking if possible.
