About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Row, Row, Row Your Scull Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 8, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 8, 2018

The plan was to intercept the Bike Barn cyclists around FM 1960 on Lake Houston as I biked the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. The start at 8:27 am should have been earlier to aid in the plan but I rode at a good pace and saw the first bikers on the causeway. As I was waiting for the traffic light to change at FM 1960 and Astascocita Shores another cyclist pulled up behind me and then moved to the top of the short incline to turn left. That was risky with two vehicles in front of meeting waiting to make the turn too. Earlier in the ride I saw several recreational bikers in Kingwood.

With the early start the humidity was high but began to go down as the sun went higher. Weather during the bike ride: start 76 (99% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 89 (62% Humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 5 mph.

Now that I was on FM 1960 riding east a few bikers rode west on the other side. I didn’t stop to take photos because of the traffic and timing. Looking to my right on the lake I spotted a rowing scull accompanied by a small powered boat. Since I haven’t seen them on the lake before I stopped and took these photos. They originate behind the Cedar Landing restaurant on the east side of the lake. I saw their sign in the past but never any body rowing.

Not long after I took the rowing photos more bicyclists arrived heading west on the other side of the road. Traffic got in the way of a couple photos.

Back on the Canyon bike I continued riding east to Fairlake Drive. A few more cyclists passed headed west before I made the turn. On Fairlake Drive more cyclists made their way towards where i stopped to take photos. One rider pealed off and circled behind and stopped. We talked while he waited to go back south on the road and ride more miles before returning to Kingwood. Later I saw him again as I stopped for the traffic light at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960. He turned right while I went left. Photos from Fairlake Drive.

Now that those bikers passed there was a lull and I resumed biking. When I rode east on Old Atascocita more bikers arrived and I took these photos.

To add some distance to the ride i crossed FM 2100 and rode about 3/10’s of a mile where I took the last two photos above. Turning around I headed back to FM 2100. As I approached the stop sign I saw a biker on the other side walking his bike. I t looked like he was talking on his phone. I rode across and pulled up to him to see if he needed any help. He said he had a flat tire and someone was on the way to pick him up. I said okay and returned to FM 2100 to ride to the Huffman Chevron where I stopped long enough to refill my water bottle before riding west on FM 1960.

By now the wind was from the west at 5 mph so there was resistance as I pedaled but I still managed to keep my overall average speed at 14.0 mph. Since I rode through Atascocita earlier in the ride to be able to see other cyclists I made the turn left on the west side of the lake and went through Walden to not shorten the ride. Once I was riding north again the wind wasn’t much of a problem and I finished the bike ride at 11:15 am.

Sunday will be a rest day as my wife and I watch the Texans football game and then the Astros.

Public input welcome on bike lanes connecting downtown, South Waco

By MIKE COPELAND | www.wacotrib.com

A youngster wearing a big grin was pedaling his bicycle near Gurley Lane and South 18th Street on Wednesday, while officials meeting in the nearby South Waco Library discussed installing bike paths from downtown to his neighborhood.

Dark Clouds Circling With Thunder Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 7, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 7, 2018

As I write this I hear thunder to the south where I didn’t ride today. I might have biked in the rain. Instead I rode to the north on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route for 35.14 miles. I thought about stopping to take some pictures of the threatening clouds to the south but I didn’t a spot to stop that would do them justice so I rode on. The bike ride started at 11:07 am after I finished watching stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana. The last 3 KM was uphill with some grades as high as 24%. Several racers were zigzagging across the road trying to go forward. The commentators said some people were having trouble walking up the road and motorcycles were grinding gears to stay moving. I would have not done well either being a flat lander in Houston.

Weather during my bike ride: start 86 (74% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 91 (64% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind calm. The wind wasn’t exactly calm and bicycling south seemed to require the most effort. The cloud cover appears to hold the temperature down some but the increase humidity more than offsets the lower heat. I seemed to ride in the sun most of the ride with the heavy clouds circling around the opening. Dark clouds hovered in the distance.

My PowerPod and Wahoo TickrFit are capturing data just like they should. The Wahoo Elemnt computer displays it and I look at it as I ride. Sometimes I can exert more effort and affect the numbers and sometimes I can’t. I don’t analyze the data too closely but I find it interesting while I bike.

Back in Kingwood I rode keeping an eye on the dark clouds and thinking where I could take shelter if the rain started but I finished the ride without needing to do that at 1:52 pm.

Saturday weather forecast has rain in it but if I start early (8 am) maybe I will finish before the rain can come. Wishful thinking?

Hike-bike plan can make region better

www.beaumontenterprise.com

More and more adults in Southeast Texas, just like people everywhere, are riding bicycles these days. For that reason, the ambitious plan by the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission for more “hike and bike” paths deserves support — and some level of tax dollars.

Bike riding past childhood isn’t a trend. By now, after several decades of sustained growth, it should be clear that it’s here to stay — just like the increase in walking, jogging, gym memberships, healthier eating, etc. These activities aren’t practiced by a few health nuts. Bike riding in …
