About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mostly Cloudy With Dark Clouds Hanging Around Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 4, 2018 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 4, 2018

My bike ride plans for Labor Day got washed away but not today. I delayed the start to give the clouds time to move away and to watch stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana. At 11:50 am I pulled away to bike the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route with the sky filled with mostly white clouds but some gray ones on the horizon. I hoped I could complete this bike ride without getting rained on. I bicycled 34.57 miles enough to push the September total to 76.67 miles, 11% of my goal of 700 miles. Now that the daylight is getting shorter and fall is only 17 days away this month’s goal is not ambitious as August.

Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (78% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 9 mph. Finish 88 (68% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 12 mph. The higher humidity was evident and caused me to produce lots of sweat. For the first couple of miles I didn’t notice how warm it was but once I started heating up the higher humidity worked against the cooling flow of perspiration.

The ride went as planned though I battled the wind whenever I was out in the open and riding to the east. This was most noticeable crossing Lake Houston on FM 1960. There was a brief encounter with light rain on FM 2100 for about 1/2 a mile while I was riding in sunshine which is always kind of strange.

At the Huffman Chevron I refilled water and ice for the 11+ miles to the finish. I was there about 5 minutes. Biking west on FM 1960 was definitely easier than going the opposite direction. I improved my overall average speed to 14.1 mph.

With the late start I was concerned about getting to Kingwood Drive when Kingwood High School traffic let loose but I crossed 30 minutes before that time. With some dark clouds gathered to the west as I rode through Kingwood I finished the ride at 2:27 pm without getting rained on.

Wednesday the chance of rain drops below 50% so a bike ride should take place.

Bicyclists would gain under regional hike-and-bike plan

By Phoebe Suy | www.beaumontenterprise.com

Dayna Rothenberger rides to her Beaumont job on a “ridiculous” bicycle, complete with an inflatable unicorn sporting a rainbow tail.

The unicorn, nicknamed Larry, makes her feel safe, Rothenberger said, as drivers give her more space instead of almost running her over on her 15- to 20-mile daily work commute.

The South East Texas Regional Planning Commission, citing a “passionate bicycling community” in the Golden Triangle, has …

College Station council: Only one Ofo citation issued under new bike-share rules

By CAITLIN CLARK | www.theeagle.com

So far only one citation has resulted from the city of College Station’s dockless bike-share ordinance that was adopted in mid-July.

The regulations OK’d by the City Council were approved ahead of the fall semester at Texas A&M University, where the number of yellow Ofo bikes are expected to increase. The ordinance, which outlines a set of rules bike-share companies must follow to operate in the city, was approved in July, but the city has allowed a grace period while Ofo registered with the city. …

In an issued statement, police said an officer entering I-10 from Pine Street at 1:16 a.m. saw debris in the roadway and stopped to investigate. There, the officer found a deceased white male who had apparently been riding his bicycle west on I-10. The victim was …

Bob Beal, a note from your biggest fan

Pam Palileo | www.fortstocktonpioneer.com

(Publisher’s note: Pam Palileo is the former publisher of the Fort Stockton Pioneer. The Pioneer invited her to share her thoughts on Bob Beal, a former Pioneer reporter whom Pam hired and worked with and, more importantly, became a dear friend. Beal was killed Aug. 27 when he was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle).

I write this tonight with the saddest of hearts. My dear friend, my right arm news guy, my good cop/better cop partner in crime has written his final story. This tribute honors a man that I admired. A man who taught me much more than he realized and helped strengthen the backbone of who I am. A man who left a resounding effect on most everyone he met. A man who I am not ready to say goodbye to.

I will never forget the day Bob commented on a story online. Something about his comment peaked my curiosity as to who Bob Beal was. The comment was intelligent, well thought out and eloquent. All the makings of a great reporter. In my quest to meet “Bob Beal” and pick his brain, not only did I learn he …

Safe cycling: Keys to composite bike design integrity

DONNA DAWSON | www.compositesworld.com

Steps bike designers and manufacturers must take to keep high-performance carbon fiber composite bicycles safe, upright and on the road or trial.

Global market research firm Lucintel (Dallas, TX, US) predicts that the worldwide bicycle market will be worth US$59.9 billion by 2021, with CAGR of 2.4% from 2016 to 2021. Although bicycles with carbon fiber composites frames and other components will no doubt still account for a small percentage of that market’s upper end, it is clear that bicycle manufacturers are increasingly turning to carbon fiber composites for the advantages they offer. Compared to aluminum bikes, those made with carbon fiber are extremely lightweight, have greater strength and stiffness and damp vibration better due to the viscoelastic nature of resin matrices. Further, they are more responsive in terms of handling and feel, and, because they are molded, they …
