Just a Few Miles Short – August 31st Bike Ride By Rick Ankrum, on August 31, 2010, 8:52 pm
The last day of August has arrived and I am just a few miles short of the 600 mile mark that was my goal. If had rode yesterday it would have put me over the top but I had some chores around home that needed to get done plus I wanted to watch stage 3 of the Vuelta a’ Espana that I had recorded earlier in the day. Rain was in the area although it did not land at our place. Our yard is super dry so it was a relief for it to rain yesterday and today in the afternoon. By the time I got home from work today the roads had dried out and riding was not a problem except for a couple of low spots. The grass and plants might make it now.
No other riders were spotted on the route this evening. Daylight is getting shorter especially with the clouds from the rain. With 4 months left and about 1500 miles to go for my year’s goal (5200 miles) I will need to average 400 miles per month. When November and December get here that will be difficult.
Today’s ride statistics:
- miles 22.16
- riding time 1:32:35
- average pace 4:11 min/mile
- average speed 14.4 mph
- max speed 21.1 mph
- average cadence 76.8 rpm
- max cadence 104 rpm
- climb 194 ft., descend 181 ft., max elevation 76 ft.
- August miles 591.48
- YTD miles 3699.09

About Texbiker.net Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.
My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.
Thanks to my wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.
In 1999 Texbiker.net was born to help my fellow bikers have ready access to all of the information about the Texas bicycling scene.
