Most of the morning it looked doubtful to ride outside but the temperature crawled above 60 degrees around 11:30. After a quick run to drop off a package at UPS I got dressed for the ride. Since it was cloudy and cooler than yesterday I wore a long sleeve thermal jersey under the wind jacket. Leg warmers completed my attire. I decided to ride around Kingwood and up to Brooklyn Trails with the desire to ride at least 20 miles. It took a little longer to get my body heat flowing to counter the wind chill. Maybe if the sun would’ve peeked out a little I would’ve felt warmer. Riding my Lynskey Helix streets and a couple of greenbelt trails got me to 23.27 miles. Starting at 12:05 PM and finishing at 1:53 PM got me back home before some light rain started. I’m still many miles from my January goal of 334 road miles. Weather: Start 63 degrees, humidity 83%, dew point 58, mostly cloudy, wind E 10 mph; Finish 65 degrees, humidity 83%, dew point 59.6, cloudy, wind NE 9 mph.

I live in Houston without a car. No, I’m not crazy.
by Gwen Howerton | www.chron.com
Everybody says Houston is unwalkable, and they’re not wrong. But I still manage.

My bike at the “We Heart Houston” sign at 8th Wonder Brewing in East Houston
I could see the bus from three blocks away.
I’ve learned to look past the blinding headlights as I crane my neck.
It’s getting closer, one stop away. I pull out my phone for my ticket and grab my groceries. But as I look up, the bus whooshes past me in a red, white and blue whirl. The driver didn’t even see me.
I assessed my options: I could walk home with my two bags of groceries, which would be at least 30 minutes in the dark. I could wait for the next bus, which would theoretically come in 15 minutes. Or, I could admit defeat and call an Uber, an option of …

Day 14:Del Rio to Fort Clark Springs: Unremarkable day into an area currently in the news Thursday January 25, 2024, 36 miles (58 km) – Total so far: 487 miles (784 km) We were happy to leave Del Rio, but heavy fog kept us in town until 11am. So we grabbed a big breakfast at Skillets before heading out.
Today was a short ride to the towns of Brackettville and Fort Clark Springs. We took some backroads out of Del Rio before rejoining Hwy 90. Not much to say about this ride except the shoulder was decent, the traffic was bad, and the Border Patrol and local police were out in full force.
This region has been in the news lately. Eagle Pass, a community 45 minutes away has been taken over by state governor to control border crossings and the supreme court recently outlawed the use of razor fences along the border.
It seems everyone …

Pop A/B – PM died – Karoo2 Richardson, Texas
Arthur Westover | strava.com
First outdoor ride in a long time. Now with look-style pedals, so I had a hard time getting clipped in relative to normal. We didn’t go that fast, and I can’t say the legs were great, but it was great to get out and ride outdoors. Stopped at Whole Foods with a few of the guys to chat afterward.
Still trying to troubleshoot my Karoo2 related to distance when linked to the powertab hub. Unfortunately my PM died. So still need to some more troubleshooting.

Broke Free To Ride Outside Second Time This Month
I broke free from my house to ride outside for the second time this month. The only other outside ride this month was two weeks ago and today I rode the same route as then, Atascocita – Walden – Huffman. I waited until 11:37 AM to start the ride to give the streets time to dry after the overnight rain. I saw another cyclist along W. Lake Houston Parkway which I did not expect. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. Before the ride I aired up the tires since it has been over a month since it has been outside on the road. My legs felt good thanks to all of the Zwift rides and climbing while I was inside. Weather for today’s ride: Start 66 degrees, humidity 77%, dew point 58.8, partly cloudy, wind 3 mph; Finish 70 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 57.6, partly cloudy, wind NW 6 mph. I may have over dressed wearing leg warmers but that’s okay.

Bicycle World closes abruptly in downtown Waco
Mike Copeland | wacotrib.com

Bicycle World on University Parks Drive, which sponsored cycling-related events downtown and became a gathering spot for cycling enthusiasts, closed abruptly this week. Staffers learned their fate when reporting to work Tuesday morning, an employee told the Tribune-Herald.
Gerid Bridges, a salaried employee at Waco’s Bicycle World at Mary Avenue and University Parks Drive, confirmed in an interview he is one of about nine people now without a job. He said he moved to Texas from Louisville, Kentucky, about six years ago to take a job with Bicycle World in Grapevine, which like Waco’s was owned by …
Why these bike lanes in Austin are red, not green
By Adele Peters | www.fastcompany.com
The federal government says green is the approved color for bike lanes—but Austin took a different route.

Bright green bike lanes like those in New York City and San Francisco are now common throughout the country. But in Austin, Texas, some bike lanes are red instead.
When it adds a bike lane to an existing street, Austin doesn’t add color. But when a new separated lane is paved for the first time, the city chooses a terra-cotta shade. It says it’s more affordable than adding paint or a colored plastic coating on top of the pavement, as is standard in other U.S. cities. …

Bumbling around Flatrock Ranch shot on Insta360 Ace pro
Bumbling MTB | www.youtube.com
Taking my Ibis Ripley AF down speed and MB2 at Flatrock Ranch. Shot on the Insta360 Ace pro. Figured I would give it another shot but the major downfall for the ace, pro for filming mountain biking is that the field view is way too narrow. the view on this run is the best it will get as I shot it in Freeframe mode and squished the square shot without cropping it into a 16 x 9 video. As you will see in the video, the vertical view in horizontal view is much too narrow as sometimes you cannot see the trail ahead and the handlebars, don’t even fit in the frame. I don’t have any complaints about the image quality, however. That looks pretty good. What do you think?

Day 11:Sanderson to Langtry: Expect the Unexpected Monday January 22, 2024, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 391 miles (629 km) Still in the 30s this morning but we have to keep moving so we put together a Stripes gas station breakfast and head out.
Today was all about staying warm and hills. This section of Hwy 90 loses the railroad grade, so there are a lot of climbs. And not much to look at when you have cloudy skies.
About 20 miles after Sanderson you hit Dryden, which has a small store. The owner is nice and helpful to cyclists but …

Day 12: Langtry to Del Rio: Finishing Section 3 of the Southern Tier
Tuesday January 23, 2024, 60 miles (97 km) – Total so far: 451 miles (726 km) It rained some during the night so all of our gear was wet when we woke up. We were slow to get going and pack up. There is a $5 donation sign with a small box for the camping so we donated because it really was a lovely spot.
Headed over to the Judge Roy Bean Museum in town. They are open 8-5 during the week and they have water and clean bathrooms. And it’s a cool place to check out and learn the history behind the law west of the Pecos River. Also, we made a friend in Bridget who works the help desk. She just bought 700 acres in Langtry after leaving the city life. She kept saying inspire her but she equally inspired us.
The ride today was more of the same. A lot of large Texas rollers, all the way to Comstock. Before you get to Comstock, you cross the …
