No problem deciding which route to ride today, south and east, on Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive. Last night I fixed the rear tire flat on the Cervelo Caledonia bike. The problem was a previous patch I made using an adhesive patch came loose. I replaced it with a glue on patch and all was well for today’s ride. When I got dressed I put on leg warmers but just before leaving the temperature improved to 67+ so I removed them. My legs need a little time to warm up but after that they felt fine. I rolled out a little earlier than yesterday at 11:35 AM. I hoped to ride a little longer distance than this route usually is to set up the potential to get to 200 road miles for the month with tomorrow’s ride. I think I did that riding 36.61 miles resulting in 165.1 miles for January. 35 miles tomorrow is doable if the weather forecast holds true.
I didn’t expect to see other cyclists during the ride. The first cyclist was on Kings Parkway. I almost missed the three others because I had my head down as they rode the opposite direction on Kings River Drive. I was riding west, they rode to the east.
You can see in the video the asphalt work on Old Atascocita Road. Nice new asphalt is always appreciated.
No Strava local legend today. I did ride the KPHS Sprint segment today which I don’t normally include in this route to give me a buffer on the ride count.
Throwback to 2015 at Bluff Creek Ranch when the skies opened up and the rain came down over night. Hard.
Fortunately, the soil at Bluff Creek Ranch stays pretty rideable while wet. The roots get slippery and it gets sloppy, but it doesn’t seem to turn into peanut butter the way other Texas trails can.
For the most part, mountain bikers don’t shy away from racing in the rain. We avoid riding wet trails to help preserve them and not create ruts/erosion, but on race weekends there sometimes ins’t much of a choice. …

The GHCF provides year round racing opportunities in the Greater Houston area but there is plenty of racing beyond that, in this email I’ll highlight some of that racing planned for 2024!

We take on the 2024 Miles of Discomfort Half Marathon. Almost 20 miles and 2,000 feet of vertical and some of the best trails in all of Texas.
This was our final testing race before the start of the 2024 TMBRA Texas MTB Race Series and not a bad showing with Will coming in 3rd in under 40 and Dave coming in 5th in the over 40 age groups.
I planned on riding my Cervelo Caledonia on today’s bike ride but as I was about to lift it off the rack I squeezed the rear tire, it was flat. So I switched to the Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. Nice to have options when something like this happens.
When I woke up this morning I wasn’t sure today would be an outside bike ride because of the 36 degree temperature. the warmed things up rather quickly and by 11:30 I started getting ready to ride. I went over route options in my head and settled on riding north but not which specific route. I left it with two options: ride to Caney Creek and back or to Roman Forest Blvd. and back. I made the decision after starting at 12:13 PM as I warmed up riding: New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst. This would the first ride this far north in 2024 which isn’t saying too much since this only my fourth road ride this year. The sun and light wind helped. I dressed for 63 degrees: shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a wind jacket. I was comfortable once I warmed up and from the sun. I rode 34.82 miles and finished at 2:53 PM. There aren’t enough days left in January to reach my 334 road mile goal but today got me a little closer. The next two days should be road rides and narrow the shortfall.
I reclaimed one Strava Local Legend on KPHS Sprint by riding it twice today. The other Local Legend on VR’s Step UP! I didn’t plan on.
Weather: Start 65 degrees, humidity 43%, dew point 41.5, mostly clear, wind W 3 mph; Finish 68 degrees, humidity 38%, dew point 41.1, mostly clear, wind W 5 mph.

Fun time last night at Reveille Peak Ranch for the 2nd Annual Team Trail Party Downhill Slalom with Brant Hatton of MTB Grand Tours and friends. First time there for me, rode some fun trails and jumps (no POV this time) and met everybody… cool crowd! Did his some jumps well, but did loose my feet on the way down of one jump, recovered but close enough to make me go hmmmmmm. Didnt lock in on the lippy launch.
Hey yall! My girls and myself clean up and lube bikes in our back yard and give them to people that need them. Every once in a while, when the bone pile adds up, we’ll do a “trashcan” build. Heres my favorite little cruiser. This sarted life as a Huffy USA Built Western Flyer Quasar 15 speed Mountian bike. We drug it out of a trash pile in a back yard. The tires, cables, and brake pads where roached, no life left in the bearings, rims where rusted through, so we did this! Now shes …

Day 17:Hondo to San Antonio: Busy roads, a little bit of France in Texas, and arriving in Alamo city
Sunday January 28, 2024, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 615 miles (990 km)
We knew today would be hard. Navigating into an unknown big city on bicycles is always a little stressful.
We left Hondo and made our way over more hills to Castroville. The highway is still a four lane divided highway but the traffic has really picked up. The shoulder is wide but littered with debris. My tire was still giving me trouble but we just …
