About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Downtown could become hub of bike share service

By J.B. SMITH | www.wacotrib.com

An increasingly popular trend in the “sharing economy” appears to be barreling toward Waco on two wheels.

Three firms have approached city officials about setting up bike-sharing systems that would distribute bicycles around town and allow anyone to unlock them with a smartphone app and go for a ride at moment’s notice.

City and downtown officials have talked with Zagster, LimeBike and Ofo about their …

High School Football Playoff Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 2, 2017 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2017

Another late fall weather day in southeast Texas. How could I stay inside? I activated the DVR to record the second half of the University of Cincinnati vs. Xavier basketball game in order to go biking. Now I have to stay away from Twitter until I watch it.

Starting at 12:33 PM (delayed watching the first half of the game) I rode north on the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route for a total of 27.4 miles. bumping December to 62 miles total. Year to date I am at 7,361 miles only 70 miles away from the “stretch’ goal of 7,430 miles.

The weather: 74 degrees at the start, 77 degrees at the end (2:32 PM), mostly cloudy sky, light breeze 4 mph from the southeast.

Wardrobe: long and short sleeve jerseys, bike shorts.

I was a little chilly at the start but within a few miles the body heat took over and it was comfortable from then on.

The bike ride went smoothly. When I turned right onto Valley Ranch Parkway up ahead I saw the Texan Drive Stadium with many cars and people in the stands with the announcer coming over the loudspeakers. High school football playoffs are happening and if my memory is right from the reading the sports section this was between Lufkin HS and Westfield HS. I took this photo.

Bike Ride NCISD HS Football

The game was underway but people were still arriving as I took the photo. The bands were playing too.

Sunday’s weather forecast has some rain in it and we sure do need some. With the Houston Texans playing I will be at home watching. Back biking on Monday or Tuesday when the rain leaves.

Safety concerns grow as new bike share company comes to Dallas

By: FOX4News.com Staff | www.fox4news.com

News of a fifth bike-sharing company is touching a nerve with several people along the Dallas Katy Trail.

Dallas has seen a surge in companies bringing bikes of assorted colors to the streets for the public to use. A lot of them can be found around the pedestrian and bike-friendly Katy Trail.

Friends of Katy Trail, a non-profit that maintains it, is going to be meeting with city transportation officials and bike-sharing company leaders next week to talk about the problem of too many bikes being left around. They say part of the problem is …

The Bike Lane That Got Away

By Jessica Wiggins | bikehouston.org

In May 2016, a temporary two-way cycle track was introduced on Houston Avenue. TxDOT and City of Houston were proactive in designing and building this detour which linked the Heights Hike and Bike Trail and the White Oak Bayou Trail and preserved access to off-street trails during construction of a bridge over White Oak Bayou. Community members quickly began to use the temporary connection and made the new amenity one of their preferred routes.
Last month, during the week of November 12, an …

A Word From Our Director………. John Long

>>Thumbs up to the City of Houston for extending the Lamar Street protected bike lane southeast past Discovery Green along Polk Street. Once completed, it will connect the Columbia Tap Trail to the Buffalo Bayou Trail through downtown. Let me be clear: we’re not great fans of two-way bike lanes. However, we’re excited about the emerging network of bike lanes and trails connecting bayous, converted railroad lines and streets. Soon there will be unbroken connections along White Oak Bayou, the Heights MKT Trail, Buffalo Bayou, Lamar/Polk Street, Columbia Tap Trail and …

November Biking Summary and First December Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 1, 2017 by Rick AnkrumDecember 1, 2017

Two days off the bike but today I was back on biking the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 34 miles to start December. The weather was a little chilly (for me anyway) with 70 degrees at the 11:55 AM start. The forecast was for 75 degrees but when I finished at 2:27 PM it was up to 74. Being a temperature wimp I wore a long sleeve thermal jersey under a short sleeve one and bike shorts. At first I was chilled but by four miles into the ride I started to warm up and was comfortable the rest of the ride. I could tell when I biked in the shade though.

Now that it December Christmas decorations are coming out of hiding. In Bear Branch Village of Kingwood I took this photo.

No snow but they have the Christmas spirit. In Atascocita a few years ago there was a house with about every Christmas cutout you could imagine in the front yard. I didn’t know there was so many.

Today’s ride went well and no surprises. I missed getting stopped by the train on Old Atascocita Road by about 3 minutes and later at the FM 2100 crossing the crossing arms came down and I stopped but the train was parked west of the crossing and after a minute or two the arms went up and traffic moved across the tracks.

SportTracks Ride Summary

SportTracks Bicycle Ride Summary

Now that November is over this is a recap of my bike rides. My goal was 360 miles and I exceeded that by 118.8 miles.
