About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Southern Tier 2017

By Alan Young | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 21: Carmine – Austin
Saturday March 18, 2017, 84 miles (136 km) – Total so far: 1,337 miles (2,152 km)
The pie shop on the main 290 highway was our first port of call, couple of pies and a coffee set us up for a major days ride.
The fog took a while to clear as we headed west. Our first bald eagle sighting by a lake took us by surprise. The wind still from the south not as fierce as yesterday. Arriving in Bastrop the heat picking up a chance for a cool drink and food. Drivers patient with the two tourists as we negotiate our way onto Shiloh Road, which took us away from the hoards of Saturday shoppers.
As we topped up our water bottles in a …

Tour de Houston seemed to have more crashes than in past years… want to discuss it?

by ThatGuyinHouston | www.reddit.com

I did the 60 mile route of the Tour de Houston today. There was some fog right after sunrise, but otherwise the weather was nearly ideal. Wind wasn’t bad at all. This was my third Tour de Houston.
I saw the aftermath of no less than 6 “rider-down” crashes, with two of them appearing to be pretty serious. We heard there were some others, too. I myself went down pretty hard when a pair of riders in front of me both fell and I couldn’t even get to my brakes. My bike collided with the guy and I went over the bars and rolled a couple of times. I got up and went back to the guy I flew over, and picked my bike up off of him, and within a minute all three of us determined we were not in need of medical treatment and we all rolled on. I got a little scrape on my left elbow, but it …

It’s not Tour de France but cyclists say Houston’s version is rewarding

I.M. Sixel | www.mysanantonio.com

Sandra Tezino is training for the Boston Marathon next month, so she ran 20 miles on Saturday.
Then she matched that distance Sunday cycling in the Tour de Houston.
The ride, the second time the 49-year-old Tezino has participated in the 12th annual city-sponsored event, was a training opportunity as well as a chance to pedal through some of the more scenic neighborhoods of Houston. The 20-mile course through River Oaks and West University took about 90 minutes, she said, where she hit speeds up to 21 miles an hour.
“It’s a wonderful ride,” said Tezino, who waited at the finish line for her daughter to complete a 44-mile trek.
Tezino was one of about …

Thousands of people participate in Tour de Houston as the city tries to become more bike-friendly

by Nicole Eldridge | cw39.com

HOUSTON — There is no better way to start a Sunday than a morning bike ride for a noteworthy cause.
The city’s 12th annual “Tour de Houston,” presented by the Apache Corporation, kicked off as a part of Mayor Sylvester Turner’s “Wellness Weekend.”
“Thousands of riders are out here; all the proceeds go to Houston Parks for their reforestation program,” Mayor Turner said.
In an effort to become a more bike-friendly city, Houston rallies up cyclers of all ages and …

Short Sleeve Jersey Bike Ride Day

Texbiker.net Posted on March 19, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 19, 2017

A beautiful short sleeve jersey bike ride day around the Kingwood area. The route selection today put me on the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” streets and roads. A partly cloudy, mid 80’s temperature and a 6 mph SW breeze made for an enjoy able bike ride totaling 32.56 miles. My legs were not fully recovered from the 40+ miles on yesterday’s ride but it wasn’t too tough.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened on the ride although some of the streets and roads look different when I bicycle them in the opposite direction. I did see a few “casual” bicyclists at the beginning and end of the ride.

I ended up biking 180.84 miles this week, making up some of the miles lost due to weather and other activities. For March I stand at 317.56 miles (54% of my goal). With 11 potential bike ride days left this month I think my 586 mile goal is in sight. Riding 9 different days put the average ride at 35.28 miles. If I average the miles I will need to ride about 8 times to reach my goal.

Spring arrives tomorrow and the weather looks very spring-like for most of the week. Cycling will be on my agenda.

Calves, CO2 Cartridge Puff and 2 German Shepherds Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 18, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 18, 2017

Plenty of other cyclists out today along the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route. The first cyclist was about 3 miles into the ride still in Kingwood. The next was on Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100. And a third was stopped on the Lake Houston Causeway about half way across fixing a flat tire. When I pulled up to see if he needed any help he just finished using a CO2 cartridge to air up the tire. He said he was in good shape and I continued riding. Next I saw two ladies riding on Kings River Drive. I waved at all of them. In addition I saw numerous other “casual” cyclists on the greenbelt trails beside the streets I rode on. Warm weather and the weekend draws people outside. Around the 39 mile point I saw two cyclists I have talked to on other occasions and today I waved as we passed.

Riding on Old Atascocita Road and Ramsey Road I passed several herds of cattle. Each herd had a bunch of calves and they stared at me as I rode by. Later as I turned west onto Stroker Road at one the automatic gate opened and two German Shepherds spotted me and ran down the driveway but I must’ve rode out of their line of sight and the barking and growling went silent. I have seen a dog at this location before but the gate is always closed. I guess someone was getting ready to leave and they may have quieted the dogs.

The bike ride totaled 40.51 miles, the longest ride this month, and the first time I rode this route this year. I am now up to 49% of the March mileage goal and 148.28 miles this week.

Even though it was 80 degrees when I started at 12:17 (delayed by my watching Milan Sanremo race) I wore a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one. Sometimes I felt over dressed and other times when the sun went behind the clouds I was just right. I finished the ride at 3:27. I had to alter my route a little at the Town Center Park where there was a event with the streets closed, lots of people and food trucks.

Great bicycling weather continues tomorrow (Sunday) and I hope to go riding.
