About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Big Differences Riding a MTB vs. Road Bike

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2016

I don’t ride my Motobecane 700HT MTB very often (9 times this year) and I notice a big difference between riding my MTB and my road bike. The first thing is the big weight difference. My legs get a workout getting up to speed and staying there. Sometimes I wonder if MTB miles ought to count twice my road bike miles because the MTB weighs about 2 times as much (MTB 32 pounds, Stradalli 18 pounds). Next is the gearing. Pedaling at 100 RPM on the MTB in the largest gear I can turn puts me at 15 mph versus the road bike’s 20+ mph. Today I was spinning like crazy and not going very fast in the lower gears. The Kingwood Trails are mostly flat but there are inclines and pedaling up them I bog down quickly. But the view is different and the ride does not take as much time as a road trip. Today’s bike ride was 15.55 miles long, riding time 1:24:54.

Another difference is my aversion to mud. A MTB seeks mud and I avoid it whenever possible. So far I kept the mud at bay but there are times when it wins. I don’t like to clean a mud covered bike.

Weather conditions warmed up from yesterday. The weather conditions at the end of the ride.

10-23-2016-home-weather-finish-146pm

As you can see the forecast for the next 10 days is very consistent; clear and in the mid 80’s. I plan on taking advantage of the weather.

With today’s ride October mileage increased to 638 and YTD I am at 6,570 miles. Riding 4 days this week I managed 125 miles.

Silsbee, TX to Merryville, LA: Au revoir Texas, bonjour Louisiana!
Friday October 21, 2016, 57 miles (92 km) – Total so far: 345 miles (555 km)
Today we crossed into Louisiana! The temps cooled off to a high 75 with clear skies and a brisk wind. Other than the wind being directly against us at a noticeable 10 mph, biking conditions were perfect. We had a flat, freeway 32 miles from Silsbee to Kirbyville, then another 25 on smaller roads to Merryville, LA. The first section of highway 323 over to Merryville is nerve wracking, with zero shoulder and fast traffic in both directions with a lot of trucks. It gets better after you cross the junction with highway 87.
Near Bon Wier we had stopped briefly to look at the map, and heard gunshots coming from the left side of the road. We decided it was time to move on, and as we pedaled down the road, we passed a man standing on the steps to his trailer, maybe a couple hundred feet from the road, shooting at something (targets?) in the dirt in …

46 Degrees Slows This Bike Ride Start

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2016

The cool front hung around overnight delaying my ride some today. When I got up this morning my home weather station showed 46 degrees. I can’t remember the last time it was that cool this year. By 11:30 it warmed up to the low 70’s and when I started the bike ride at 12:06 it was 74 degrees. Still I chose to wear a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey. At times on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route this made me sweat and other times it kept me warm. Earlier this week I stopped at the Bike Lane store near The Woodlands and they had a 50% off sale on all long sleeve jerseys and jackets. I almost bought a couple of jerseys but thought my wardrobe was well supplied but now maybe I should’ve added a couple to the closet.

Today I biked 34.45 miles pushing me past my 600 mile goal for October. With 9 potential biking days I could hit 700+ miles for October. The weather for the next week looks warmer and dry which means great bike riding. Wind on today’s ride came from the north at 6 mph. This helped me get my overall average speed up to 15.5 mph for a long stretch of the ride.

I made a quick rest stop at the Porter Stripes station at FM1314 to eat a Kashi Trail Mix Bar (new recipe, new packaging) and some animal crackers. I washed this down with water which I did not drink much of before stopping because of the coolness. The Elemnt screen shortly after I stopped at Stripes and the weather while I ate.

10-22-2016-porter-weathger
10-22-2016-porter-weather

Leaving Stripes before 2 PM meant I only stayed 20 minutes, a short stop. From there the wind seemed to slow me down some but I still maintained the 15.5 mph average speed until I got back into Kingwood. I finished the ride at 2:41.

Tomorrow I think I will dust off the Motobecane 700HT MTB and ride the Kingwood trails. A change of venue and bike will be nice.
