About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mystery Wildcard Presidential Candidate Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2016 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2016

On my way to an encounter with the mystery wildcard candidate for the President of the United States I saw a tandem bike going west over Lake Houston on FM1960. I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and I didn’t know about the meeting I would have at the Huffman Chevron during my rest stop.

I experienced some soreness from yesterday’s ride but as I biked that went away or I ignored it. At the beginning of the ride (11:21 start time) the sun was out but as the ride progressed the clouds moved in from the southeast making it feel cooler than the 81 degrees when I started. The light 4 mph breeze helped keep me cool until I stopped when the sweat combined with the breeze made me chilled. I almost wore a long sleeve jersey but I figured the sun would keep me warm.

No major changes to this route during my vacation absence. Road construction work zone signs on the west side of Lake Houston warn of work but I can’t see where opr what they will be working on. W. Lake Houston Parkway south from Kings River Drive to FM1960 repairs are underway but since it was Saturday the barrels were in the grass not blocking traffic. This could smooth broken pavement around drain openings. Some of them are bad enough that I ride around them.

I pulled into the Huffman Chevron at 12:59 with 21.7 miles completed of what would be a 33.49 mile ride. I bought some blue Powerade and sat half in the shade and half in the fading sun to keep warm as I cooled down. A lady with a heavy accent said some words when she went into the store to pay for gas and I nodded. When she came out she talked some more and I nodded more since I wasn’t sure what she was saying. I waved as she walked away. The the mystery wildcard candidate walked towards me. She introduced herself and we shook hands. I am not sure of her name. She looked at my Texbiker.net jersey and asked if I would support her charity. The lady told me that the man driving the car had a blood disease and was an EMT. The charity involved the disease, I think. She said she would tell me more after paying for gas. As promised she stopped on the way out of the store. She told me she paid with a $2 bill and then handed me the receipt with a phone number on. She asked how she could contact me and I gave her a Texbiker.net business card. As she walked back to the car she thanked me for wearing red, white and blue and told me to watch for her winning the election. Interesting encounter. The store clerk came out and asked what she said and I told her. She showed me the $2 which the mystery lady said had been in a vault for 20 years but was a series 2003 Federal Reserve note.

10-1-2016-huffman-weather

Leaving the Chevron at 2:31 I made my way over the 11+ miles to finish the ride at 2:23. Riding was much cooler than when I started but my body heat built up to counter the cool wind coming through my jersey.

Back from Vacation Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 30, 2016 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 30, 2016

I have been on vacation since September 8th and today was my first ride after returning home. The weather was picture perfect: clear blue sky, 78 to 80 degrees, 8 mph NE breeze and low humidity. I wanted to ride about 47 miles and ended up biking 48.52 miles on the “SR242 – FM1314” route. I wondered if much changed while I was gone and looked for things while riding but I didn’t see any changes. The Academy Sports + Outdoors store opened in the Valley Ranch shopping district north of Porter. My route didn’t take near there but I could see the store from the north bound service road when I was on the high section at Community Drive.

The ride started at 11:18 because I waited for the temperature to warm up some and I finished at 3:14.

SH 242 resurfacing west of FM1485 is complete except for some of the striping. There was a crew working on that when I was going west; they were on the other side of the road. The new asphalt was very smooth but the shoulder seems to be narrower when there is a center turn lane. On the right edge of the new asphalt is a pile of old asphalt pieces in a low mound which might be what makes the shoulder appear smaller. Traffic gave me plenty of room as they passed and I stayed near the mound of crumbling asphalt. I thought the three weeks should have given the crew time to finish the work.

The first stop was at the Chevron station at FM1485 and SH 242 for a quick water and ice refill. At the beginning of September my water bottle would have been almost empty but with the cooler temperature there was some left. This was 21.7 miles into the ride. The longer rest stop was at the Cumberland Shell station on FM1314. Here is Elemnt screen and weather while I was there.

9-30-2016-cumberland-shell
9-30-2016-cumberland-weather

Sitting in the shade at the pumps was refreshing but when the wind picked up it was a little cooler than I prefer. Keeping an eye on the time I left there around 2:14 to get past the school traffic in Briar Tree. I made it but the school buses where there waiting as well as a few parents but no one was in the street. I wasn’t as fortunate when I got to the Kings Manor school. Parents were lined up but the children were just starting to board the buses and I rode by in the left lane. Later at the Bear Branch Elementary school the traffic was light and I didn’t have to stop too much.

Wrapping up September I biked 266 miles, 34 miles less than my goal. Year to date I am at 5932 miles.

More great weather is forecast for tomorrow (Saturday) and if my legs don’t hurt too much I plan on riding.

Hundreds of competitive cyclists came out to Fort Hood Saturday and Sunday for the Fort Hood Challenge, a state championship road race put on by “The Racing Post” magazine.

It takes more than a year to plan and prepare for the two-day event, Hollinger said, working with …
