After watching stage 4 of the Vuelta de Burgos I set out on the bike ride. Yesterday evening I adjusted the front disc on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and the ride would tell if I fixed the rubbing noise. I rolled out at 10:14 AM to ride the Atasccocita South – Walden – Huffman route. This route averages about 35 miles which help cut into the mileage shortfall to my August goal. The forecast called for 102 degrees later today and I wanted to get back home before that happened. The ride went through Elm Grove Village, North Woodland Hills Village, and Bear Branch Village. I rode beside Kingwood Drive heading east dodging the fallen trees on the greenbelt when I made a re-entry mistake back onto the concrete greenbelt. The front tire caught the edge of the concrete propelling me various directions before landing on the concrete greenbelt. As I got back up pulling the Cervelo from the grasp of the limbs and vines my head was spinning. My right knee had a scrape from the concrete but not enough to bleed though I expect road rash by tomorrow. With my head spinning I couldn’t get back on the Cervelo so I walked the trail to the old HEB building. There I was able to get back on the bike but with the dizziness I rode back home, not wanting to chance any more damage. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be back on the bike. It has been awhile since my last crash.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Transportation and Public Works Department has tweaked a stretch of roadway in northwest Austin to better protect cyclists while expanding parking access.
A department spokesperson said crews recently installed parking pockets along Far West Boulevard between Northledge Drive and Hart Lane. Those changes were made due to heightened parking demands for the intramural fields fronting the roadway, the spokesperson added.

Beating the Heat: A 38.68-Mile Journey on the Canyon Endurace
I extended the bike ride to the north compared to Monday’s ride to Caney Creek. This time I rode through Tavola before heading back to Kingwood following the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike starting at 9:48 AM. According to Space City Weather the first full week of August is usually the hottest week of the year and that appears to be the case this week with the forecast calling for several 100 degrees days. My plan was to finish before the temperature got that high which I did at 1:14 PM. The wind was light allowing my legs to power me along with not too much effort though the wind shifted from the west to the south. I stopped a couple of times to refill my water bottle with ice helping me to not overheat. The previous 6 rides on this route in 2024 average a little less than 38 miles and today I rode 38.68 miles as I work towards my August goal of 904 miles. I’m getting close to the daily average of 29.2 miles I need to reach the goal. I am 16 miles short for month to date August. For 2024 year to date I am short 62 road miles.

Houston’s Grant Koontz finds bike racing thrilling yet terrifying. Now he’s riding in the Olympics
By Danielle Lerner | www.houstonchronicle.com

PARIS — When Grant Koontz turned 16, he wanted a car, like most teens. His parents gifted him a bike instead.
Little did he know that substitution would put him on a path to the Olympics.
As a student at Klein High School, Koontz competed in baseball, basketball, football and diving. He never excelled, for reasons ranging from his size to his technical abilities.
But when he first got on a bike, he realized that in cycling, there’s nowhere to hide. The sport gives back what you put into it. It was just him and the bike — no excuses.
“I think a lot of it comes down to the freedom that it gave me and the freedom to …
