About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Goal For Today’s Bike Ride: Out And Back Before The Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on July 6, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 6, 2023

The goal for today’s bike ride, out and back before the rain arrived. The forecast warned about late morning scattered rain followed by more rain in the afternoon. I started the ride at 8:32 AM aboard my Canyon Endurace bike, After riding north yesterday today I went south and east to Spanish Cove Drive through Atascocita, Walden, across Lake Houston, and south on FM 2100. Before getting to Spanish Cove Drive I saw one group of cyclists on Fairlake Lane and another group on Old Atascocita Road. The Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route is one of the more frequent ones I ride with today being the 15th time in 2023. I rode 35.67 miles which is the average distance this year. I changed the streets a little riding through Elm Grove Village during the first 2 miles but not enough to impact the overall distance. It has been more than a week since the last ride on this route.

The Canyon Endurace now has 503 miles.

The clouds got closer together as the ride progressed and there were a few clouds that looked like rain but I made it back home at 11:11 AM before any rain fell. That goal was achieved. Not too much later I heard thunder and rain fell. Today’s weather: Start 79 degrees, 87% humidity, dew point 74.6, mostly cloudy, wind calm: 86 degrees, 70% humidity, overcast, wind S 6 mph. The below 80 temperature at the start felt good until I warmed up and started sweating. No much wind to bother me during the ride.

Wet race. Sat in the back. Crashed when 2 riders went down in front of me. Scraped up my wheels. Got back in the race. Sat in the back again. Moved up for a prime, pushed wide, gave it up. Probably wouldn’t have got it anyways. With 3 to go started moving up. Course still wet. Managed 9th. (Correction 10th. Lucas broke with 3 to go.). Hoping for a dry race next week.

Back To After Sunrise Start Time Biking To Caney Creek Out & Back

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 5, 2023

No before sunrise bike ride today. I rolled away at 8:46 AM on my Lynskey Helix bike. I rode north following my Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. This was the 10th ride using this route in 2023. Today’s 33.61 miles was slightly more than the average ride distance. There was a small concern about rain with the Space City Weather forecast mentioning the chance of rain from later in the morning into the afternoon. Fortunately I finished at 11:19 AM and no rain though the clouds appeared to be coming closer together. The Lynskey now has 3,048 miles since the first ride on May 29, 2022. I didn’t realize the Lynskey was used on the majority of the rides on this route.

Weather: Start 82 degrees, 84% humidity, dew point 76.7, mostly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; Finish 90 degrees, 63% humidity, dew point 75.8, mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. The lower humidity from the pre-sunrise rides was noticeable and I didn’t need to peel off my bike kit after the ride. The light wind was helpful.

Looking at my AXS.SRAM.com ride report the gear usage showed 33 rear derailleur shifts with the 35×13 for 1:26:18 (21.2 miles) and the 35×15 39:46 (8.4 miles).

Second Before Sunrise Bike Ride In 3 Days

Texbiker.net Posted on July 4, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 4, 2023

Happy Fourth of July. I employed the same bike ride strategy today as Sunday, start very early and then go to church except it was the Kingwood parade today. I even started 2 minutes earlier at 6:10 AM. Aboard my Cervelo Caledonia I wasn’t expecting much traffic and there wasn’t. A few people were up early walking and I saw two guys on their bikes in Elm Grove Village. I’m not sure if they were getting ready to ride or finished. We waved and said hello. Sunday I biked just over 20 miles and I wanted to repeat that or more today. I finished a little later today at 7:54 AM and rode 22.88 miles.

As to be expected the humidity was high and the temperature wasn’t too bad. At the finish my bike kit was dripping. I had to peel it off. Weather: Start 77 degrees, 92% humidity, dew point 74.5, partly cloudy, wind S 4 mph; Finish 80 degrees, 92% humidity, mostly cloudy, wind S 4 mph. It was a good thing I rode before the parade rather than after because it rained after the parade.

I rode through Kingwood with a brief time through Woodridge Forest and north. Riding on Adams Street got me the Strava Local Legend on Trikelly and then I went back through Woodridge Forest and into Kingwood. It wasn’t the same route as Sunday but I did bike on some of the same streets. Last year I biked the Spring Creek Greenway on July 4th riding 29 miles.

This probably the last time for biking this early for awhile.
