About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New markers along bike trails at Gateway Park aim to cut down response times

By Lili Zheng | www.nbcdfw.com

There are 52 markers on the biking trails at Gateway Park

New markers installed along biking trails at Gateway Park in Fort Worth aim to help find injured people faster and cut down overall response times.

52 markers were recently installed, with 26 on the west and east ends of the roughly 10-mile-long trail. Fort Worth Fire Department engineer Craig Trojacek said most of the incidents they respond to are traumatic injuries, cardiac issues, and heat-related illnesses. …

Met with a good group of guys and gals this morning at Joshua Springs Park. Many times, it seemed like the females were just as strong as the guys in the ride! Dina Christal, Chantal Requier, and Katie Kuiper took numerous strong pulls. Nearing the end, I was glad to be able to stay on the wheels of Perry Stegall & Kevin Walters! As always, I must thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both spiritually, and physically, enabling me to return to this sport that I love, and for yet another safe ride with great friends!?

Nothing Exotic About Today’s Route, 200+ Mile Week In The Book

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2023

Nothing exotic about today’s bike ride route but I did start earlier than any ride so far this week at 7:44 AM. I rode south and east on my Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Walden route. I needed 22 miles for a 200+ mile week and this route averages just over 34 miles. My bike choice was the Cervelo Caledonia. My July goal is the same as June, 800 miles. I wondered if I started too early to see other cyclists but I did see several, some towards the end of the ride where I don’t usually see them. I waited until I got to FM 2100 to decide on riding south to Spanish Cove Drive which I did go to. Plenty of bike racing to watch when I got back home at 10:29 AM.

Weather: Start 80 degrees, 86% humidity, dew point 75.8, mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 59% humidity, dew point 75.3, a few clouds, wind S 7 mph. Humidity can be a problem when I start this early and my kit was soaked when I finished. Wind was light and didn’t cause too much hard pedaling.

San Antonio’s Bike World owner retiring after 52 years in business

Steven Santana | www.mysanantonio.com

Bike World stores will close soon and reopen under a new brand.

Whit Snell says his love of riding bicycles and the San Antonio biking community has kept him committed to Bike World, but the owner of the long-running bike shop says it’s time for him to leave the reins in other hands. Snell posted to Instagram on Friday saying that he is retiring from Bike World and handing the stores over to a much larger bike company out of Wisconsin.

"I’ve decided that the time has come to take a new and exciting step to plan for the shop’s next 50 years and retire as owner," the post reads.

Bike World will now be in the hands of Wisconsin-based bicycle and cycling product manufacturer and distributor Trek Bike. Snell says in the post that …

Enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, biking at Lake Bryan

By Abigail Metsch | www.kbtx.com

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Lake Bryan is the Brazos Valley’s recreation destination for fishing, boating, hiking, biking and fun of all sorts.

Meagan Brown from Bryan Texas Utilities joined The Three to share some of the ways families can take advantage of this oasis.

“We have paddleboards and kayaks that you can rent. You can camp, fish, grill, or just hang out with the family,” Brown said.

Brown says her favorite part of Lake Bryan is being there right at sunset when the sun sets over the water.

“It’s a perfect view from the deck of Cadillac Ranch, so you can enjoy a beautiful sunset and have a cold drink,” she said.

If you’re looking to camp or enjoy any daily activities, you can find that information on the Lake Bryan website.

There is also more than 24 miles of mountain bike trail around Lake Bryan. You can also hike the trails and bring your four-legged friends with you. …

New Route Closes Out June Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 30, 2023

When I started today’s bike ride and the last ride of June I didn’t realize it would be on a new route. I thought I must’ve rode this before but after the ride I checked my SportTracks activity history and couldn’t find one. What made this route different? Many of the roads are familiar ones I ride often but the main difference is how I return to Kingwood. On other routes that include Cumberland I ride through Kings Manor into Kingwood. Today I didn’t turn left at Kellington Drive from Kingwood Place Drive. I stayed on Kingwood Place Drive passing West Fork High School to Sorters Road. Sorters Road to the US59 overpass, a short section of Loop 494 and I was on Hamblen Road. Hamblen Road over the railroad tracks and about 1/2 a mile took me to the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway entrance. I stayed on the greenway and bike route sections to Woodland Hills Drive, back into Kingwood. The average distance for the Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route (the route that is the core of the new one) is about 34.5 miles. The new route, Community Drive – Cumberland – Forest Cove, was 37.44 miles. This was a nice ride to finish June’s bike rides and I plan on biking it again.

An earlier start at 8:33 AM came because stage 1 of the Giro d’Italia Donne was canceled due to flooding and I was going watch it while I ate breakfast. Not a problem for me to start a few minutes earlier. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. I solved the speed sensor problem by moving the speed sensor from the Blue Norcross AL bike I use for Zwift to the Canyon. The Blue doesn’t need a speed sensor since Zwift and the Wahoo Kickr Core smart trainer do that.

The heat is letting up a tiny bit today with the forecast below 100 but the heat index will still be above that. I finished the ride at 11:34 AM before the hottest part of the day. Weather: Start 85 degrees, 79% humidity, dew point 77.4, a few clouds, wind SW 4 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 60% degrees, dew point 76.4, partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. While the wind was light my legs had difficulty at times biking into the headwind. I used the 35×13 gears for 1:56:20 (27.6 miles) according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I made a few more rear derailleur shifts, 37, than other recent bike rides.

June biking got off to a slow start when I missed the first 2 days but after that I rode every day for a total of 967.6 miles, exceeding my 800 mile goal. The average ride was 34.56 miles. The longest ride was 45.9 miles on June 8th in Galveston. The shortest was June 25th biking 13.3 mils in Kingwood. I received my Canyon Endurace bike June 4th and took it on the first ride June 12th. I rode it 12 times during the month. The Cervelo Caledonia was in the shop for several days but I did ride it 8 times. The Lynskey Helix was on the road 8 times.
