About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

After 11 Months Biked Spring Creek Greenway To Dennis Johnston Park

Texbiker.net Posted on July 3, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 3, 2023

On yesterday’s ride I saw cyclists riding and speculated they were riding to the Spring Creek Greenway. That triggered me to decide to ride the Spring Creek Greenway today. For added miles I would ride to the Dennis Johnston Park. The last time i rode to that park was September 12th, 2022, for 46.31 miles. I mounted my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike and headed out at 8:52 AM. I must’ve changed the route a little from the September ride because today I biked 47.12 miles. Those miles moved the July total to 101.63, 13% of the way to the 800 mile goal. I finished at 1:12 PM.

There were many cyclists on the greenway on the way to Dennis Johnston Park but not many on the return trip. None were on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway and bike route as I rode back to Kingwood. I didn’t get all of them in the video.

I stopped at John Pundt Park on the way back to eat a bagel and rest. While I was there Preston Pitts pulled into shelter. He was riding on the way back to Dennis Johnston Park. We talked about bikes, riding, and other things. It was a great visit.

Weather: Start 84 degrees, 80% humidity, dew point 77.6, partly cloudy, wind calm: Finish 93 degrees, 56% humidity, mostly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph. In the shade I felt a slight cooling in the temperature probably from last evening’s rain. The greenway had damp spots in some of the shaded places.

I got two Strava medals: PR on Jesse H. Jones-1st Bridge (4:50) and 3rd fastest time on 10mi Home run (41:42).

Bike decorating event at Martin Creek Lake State Park gets attendees into patriotic spirit

By Yoleyne Romero | www.news-journal.com

TATUM — Three-year-old Hannah Butler couldn’t make up her mind. Should she decorate her pink bicycle with beads or use ribbon? What about blue stars?

It didn’t really matter in the end after mom Julie Butler took the reins and applied decorations on Hannah’s bike for her.

Julie and Seth Butler, along with children Hannah and Jackson, 12, took part Saturday in a Fourth of July Bike Decorating event at Martin Creek Lake State Park in Tatum.

According to Park Host Patty Gray, the morning started with a …

The Trailist: Classen-Steubing Park offers new hiking and mountain bike trails on the North Side

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

After five years of work by the city and volunteer trail-builders, San Antonio’s newest park is open. It brings about three miles of brand-new trails to the North Side, with about two miles built by and for mountain bikers.

The 204-acre Classen-Steubing Ranch Park in the Stone Oak area is the most recent of San Antonio’s natural areas to open to the public. The park, which opened in May, lies over sensitive areas that recharge the Edwards Aquifer and includes an earthen flood control dam nearly 2,000 feet long. …

Healthcare system makes $3,600 donation to 24 Hours in the Canyon

www.amarillo.com

Northwest Texas Healthcare System presented Harrington Cancer and Health Foundation’s 24 Hours in the Canyon with a $3,609.60 donation check as selected by employees of Northwest, the company announced in a news release this week.

Employees purchased shirts and proceeds were designated to go to this great organization, a news release states.

As Ryan Parnell, 24 Hours in the Canyon Director shared, “I’m speechless. We were so disappointed about the cancellation of this year’s event because of the flooding. It has truly been a blessing to know we are supported by our friends at Northwest.”

The 17th annual event was canceled this year due to weather conditions. In …

Rotary Club donation to CitySquare to help put those in need on two wheels

Neighbors of CitySquare Paris will soon have the opportunity to use bicycles for transportation in Paris thanks to a $5,000 contribution by Rotary Club Paris for the purchase of bicycles, helmets and locks.

“The partnership with Rotary Club of Paris United for the bicycle program will provide tremendous opportunity for those served daily by CitySquare,” executive director Derald Bulls said. “The bicycles will provide a means of transportation to gain employment and better access to CitySquare for the various services offered.”

Kingwood Streets Before Sunrise

Texbiker.net Posted on July 2, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 2, 2023

Very unusual bike ride today starting at 6:12 AM, the earliest start I can remember, 11 minutes before sunrise. It came about from my church, First Methodist Humble, having one worship service at 10 AM instead of the usual two worship services. I thought that would be enough time to ride before rather than after. I was up at 5:45 AM and could’ve started a few earlier but waited for sunrise to get a little closer. I wanted to ride at least 20 miles and finished at 7:43 AM biking 20.28 miles. Unlike June I’ve biked the first two days of July for a total of 54.5 miles versus 0. This closed out the week with 232.88 miles.

Near the end of the ride I came upon a group of cyclists that appeared to be starting their ride. I’m guessing they were heading to the Spring Creek Greenway.

It was humid. I thought the temperature might be a few degrees cooler at this time of the morning but not the case. When I finished my bike kit was soaked. Weather: Start 79 degrees, 88% humidity, dew point 75.2, partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph; Finish 82 degrees, 84% humidity, dew point 76.9, mostly cloudy, wind W 6 mph. Not much wind to fight either.

I plan on repeating this ride on Tuesday, July 4th, so I can be finished in time to watch the Kingwood parade.
