About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Excessive Heat Warning Riding Kingwood Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on June 25, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 25, 2023

An excessive heat warning for today and I decided to ride the Kingwood greenbelt trails as much as possible. Starting at 1:35 PM after getting home from church and a quick snack I rode my Lynskey Helix bike away. Some of the trails were the same as last Sunday but I added a few different ones. I rode through River Grove Park at the south end of Woodland Hills Drive and Hamblen Road. The video shows all of the boat trailers there. Passing through the baseball fields and by the horse stables put me out in the open but it wasn’t long to return to the greenbelt trail. I stopped along the lake for video shots. Biking north beside W. Lake Houston Parkway on the greenbelt not traveled very often to Northpark Drive. I crossed over to Elm Grove Village to head to the finish at 2:52 PM after riding 13.32 miles to finish the week at 224.3 miles, the third week in a row of 200+ miles. Month to date I’ve rode 789.22 miles, only 11 miles short of my goal.

Strava awarded me the Local Legend on Kingwood Drive.

Walnut Springs Hike, bike trail officially complete

Felicia Frazar | seguingazette.com

For two years, Seguin residents Jack and Valerie Lanford watched as a portion of their backyard transformed into the last leg of the Walnut Springs Hike and Bike Trail.

“Everything came together,” Valerie said. “It looks beautiful down here.”

The couple joined dozens of residents, outdoor enthusiasts and city officials as they officially opened the extension for public use. Seguin City Council was able to complete the $5.18 million project with assistance from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and Texas Department of Transportation, Seguin City Manager Steve Parker said.

“This is a great project that had partnerships between TxDOT as well as the Alamo Area MPO that …

Copperas Cove students build and keep bikes thanks to Texas Workforce

By Thaddeus Imerman | kdhnews.com

Twenty Copperas Cove middle school students and adult mentors rushed with excitement Thursday morning as they were given the go-ahead to grab their tools and bicycles the children could put together — and keep.

The Texas Workforce Commission purchased the bikes thanks to a statewide grant called Jobs, Y’all, according to Charley Ayres, director of industry-education partnerships for Central Texas Workforce Solutions.

Students were selected based on certain criteria and turned wrenches and tightened bolts and screws.

“I know that once it’s done, I’m going to feel real proud of myself,” said Kyleigh Weikum, an incoming …

This was another amazing ride put together by David Patterson who we are all very thankful to have back riding with us again!? We had a fairly big group this morning, and the pace was fast, but “friendly” in that no one intentionally got dropped. I’m very thankful to chris meldner for doing a few extra miles with me toward the end. As always, I am ultimately thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both spiritually and physically, and allowing me to not only return to this sport, that I love, but to finish another ride safely with some great friends

A quick pic of our rather large group, as we stopped to regroup at the top of a fairly steep climb.

Bike Rodeo lets children wrangle their skills with TAMUSA PD

Xochilt Garcia | mesquite-news.com

Horns honked and bells rang as eight children on bicycles rode in a parade from Patriots’ Casa to the Central Academic Building at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

The University Police Department hosted Bike Rodeo, a safety and handling training program for children ages 6 to 12 June 23.

The participants were children, grandchildren and friends of A&M-San Antonio staff.

“We don’t get to do this kind of event throughout the year,” Officer Karen Tucker said. “We wanted to offer something to the campus community children.”

The young cyclists colored and …

My Cervelo Caledonia Is Back! 200+ Mile Week. Close To The Goal.

Texbiker.net Posted on June 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 24, 2023

My Cervelo Caledonia bike returned from Kingwood Bicycles with the disc brakes now working great. I almost had cake and ice cream yesterday when I picked it up but decided today’s bike ride would be the celebration. By the way, Kingwood Bicycles will close the store front and change to mobile bike repair in the next few days.

Being Saturday I started the bike ride early with wheels down at 7:49. I have fewer things to do on Saturday morning and get out the door early. The ride went south and east through Atascocita to Huffman and on the return looped into Walden, what I label the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route. Some rides are on a similar route, Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Walden. I like the early Saturday start because other cyclists are out riding too. Today I saw numerous cyclists and caught them in the video. My ride made it a 200+ mile week (210.98) and got me to 775.89 miles for the month, 25 miles away from my goal.

Humidity can be heavy with the early start and today it was 92%. Almost like swimming. When I finished at 10:30 AM shorts and jersey were soaked. I thought my legs were tired but the wind increased to 13 mph and the headwind back across Lake Houston made pedaling hard. Weather: Start 81 degrees, 92% humidity, dew point 78.2, mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; Finish 90 degrees, 67% humidity, dew point 77.2, partly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph.

Speaking of pedaling, looking at my cadence data from rides can be enlightening.
