About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A week ago, Clutch City Cruisers were described as a ‘mob.’ Now, HPD is escorting them on rides.

Ryan Nickerson | www.houstonchronicle.com

Every Thursday evening, dozens of bicyclists convene at Market Square Park in downtown Houston to prepare for their weekly bike ride with the Clutch City Cruisers. Everything was normal for cyclists Thursday except for one crucial detail — the Houston Police Department tagged along for the ride.

As the bicyclists gathered downtown, many were surprised to see so many police officers. Even Chief of Police Troy Finner was spotted shaking hands with the cyclists and said he might one day join them.

The ride started with smiles, but there was an undercurrent of tension from the beginning.

Just a week ago, the …

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The construction of a new hike and bike trail in Brownsville and Los Fresnos is scheduled to begin later this year, licensing records show.

The project, titled “Brownsville – Los Fresnos Hike & Bike Trail,” will be located at FM 1847, from Hwy 550 to S. Alvarez Ct. The trail will cost an estimated $3 million, according to Texas Department of Licensing records.

The funds will go towards a 10-foot concrete sidewalk, a prefabricated pedestrian bridge, boardwalk, pedestrian rails, riprap, drainage and a guard fence.

Construction is scheduled to begin in November, with an expected completion date of March 31, 2024.

Video: Valley cyclists raising money for Spina bifida awareness through 250-mile long bike ride to San Antonio

By: Brenda Villa | www.krgv.com

A group of cyclists left the Valley Friday morning to spend the next 48 hours riding to San Antonio.

The 250-mile-long bike ride is being conducted to raise money and awareness for those with Spina bifida, a rare birth condition when the spine isn’t fully formed.

This is the 12th annual SB250 ride, according to Suzannah Smiles President and Founder Casey Swanson.

Swanson said he started the group to …

The short Holman Street bike lane, which leads to the passage (colloquially known as "the hole in the wall") that connects the Montrose and Midtown street grids, is an important link in Houston's bike network.

Same Start Point But Mixed Up The Route To Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on June 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 23, 2023

Wanting to mix things up some on today’s bike ride I rode my Canyon Endurace bike to Tavola north of Kingwood. While I ride to Tavola from time to time (the last time was 6/5/2023) today I changed the route after about 1.4 miles. Not new to me streets but different from the usual ones I ride going to Tavola. I biked along W. Lake Houston Parkway to Mills Branch Drive turning left. At North Kingwood Forest I entered and followed the streets to Elm Grove where I got closer to the usual streets. A short ride through Sherwood Trails and on Northpark Drive I took Woodridge Parkway to Soaring Woods Drive skipping a couple of side streets from the normal route. Then I followed the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route until I passed Via Principale Parkway where I usually enter Tavola riding to Roman Forest Blvd. Passing Via Principale Parkway began the reverse portion of the ride through Tavola. No problem getting to Aregoste Parkway to enter Tavola. Riding the streets in reverse puts the scenery in a different view. I got lost when I made a right turn from Caney Forest onto another street. The usual turns are obvious but the reverse is not so. I circled back and found the right street to take me to Gran Roble and then Via Principale Parkway to exit Tavola. From there the ride was on roads I am on several times a week. All of these changes required a new route name, Porter – Reverse Tavola – Oakhurst.

The start got delayed a few minutes while I changed the speed sensor battery but I still managed to begun before 9 AM by pushing the Bolt start at 8:50 AM. I wasn’t sure what the mileage would be today since the route was different than from previous rides. By the time I finished at 11:59 AM I biked 38.52 miles, about 2 miles longer than the average rid to Tavola. This pushed my week total to 176.72 miles and June to 741.64. This means only 59 miles to reach my June 800 mile goal.

With the temperature not as high as earlier rides this week I hoped it would feel cooler but the humidity was up. Wind was calm at the start and just barely moving at the finish. I was soaked from sweat. Weather: Start 81 degrees, 92% humidity, dew point 78.1, a few clouds, wind calm: Finish 87 degrees, 72% humidity, dew point 76.9, partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The excessive heat returns tomorrow and following days.

New Wheels Day On The Canyon Endurace CF 7

Texbiker.net Posted on June 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 22, 2023

New wheels for the Canyon Endurace CF7 bike for today’s bike ride. I received the ICAN Cycling Alpha 46 Pro Disc carbon wheels on Tuesday but didn’t have time to add all of the parts to them until yesterday. That’s when I found out I forgot to order the disc rotor lock rings. A couple of phone calls and I found them at Trek Bicycle Kingwood. A quick trip to get them and I completed the assembly. The tires are Continental Black Edition GatorSkin 700×28 that I had on hand for awhile as spares but they look good with the black wheels and dark blue Canyon. The wheels can be used as tubeless but I chose tubes. Maybe I’ll try tubeless someday. ICAN shipped tubeless valves and rim tape. I didn’t anticipate any problems during the ride and didn’t have any. I aired the tires to 70 psi which is 10 psi lower than my other bikes to see how the ride felt. I really couldn’t tell any difference.

A surprise rain storm last night lowered the heat forecast for today but I still wanted to ride before 9 AM. Rolling away at 8:53 I accomplished that. I chose my Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman route for variety and a slightly longer distance. The middle part of the ride to Huffman is different from my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route but the rest is the same. I changed the route on the way back turning left off Atascocita Shores Drive onto Rebawood Drive which I don’t ride as much. As I started riding east over Lake Houston a group of 5 cyclists rode west on the other side of the barriers.

The last 12 month ride history for this route puts the average distance around 36 miles and today I biked 36.61 miles. My Cervelo Caledonia usually is the bike I ride.

My legs weren’t at their best today so no fast pace. My AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows 33 rear derailleur shifts, 1:44:27 (24.9 miles) in the 35×13 gears, and 39:14 (7.8 miles) in 35×15 gears.

Weather: Start 82 degrees, 78% humidity, dew point 74.6, mostly cloudy, wind SE 9mph; Finish 91 degrees, 63% humidity, dew point 76.6, partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph. Compared to yesterday the temperature was down a few degrees and the wind was up a few mph.
