About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Redesign of Mesquite road to improve traffic and trail system, city says

www.wfaa.com

“The design features will not only look better, but they also will increase safety," Councilmember Debbie Anderson said.

MESQUITE, Texas — The Mesquite City Council approved a contract with Zachry Construction Corp. to reconstruct Faithon P. Lucas Sr., Boulevard, according to a city release.

City officials said the roadway will be realigned and reconstructed from the existing two-lane section to a four-lane divided section from McKenzie Road to East Cartwright Road. The design will also include a 12-foot hike and bike trail along the north side of the roadway that connects to the city’s master trail system and a roundabout connecting to the future Solterra master-planned residential development.

“The design features will not only look better, but they also will increase safety," councilmember Debbie Anderson said. "These improvements will provide better access and a safer road for this area.” …

This weather has been so crazy lately, but I was sure fortunate again this evening! I was planning on doing my standard loop, but turning left on Hein Rd. Since the forecast called for a “ chance” of thunderstorms (to keep the meteorologists safe), I checked the radar app while I took a photo of The Old #9 on Hein. It certainly got my attention as there were big thunderstorms directly north and west of me. I decided to play it safe and turn around by heading back south via Blaschke Rd and Hwy 289. The counterclockwise rotation of the storm gave me a tailwind in both directions, which hardly ever happens but was very nice! As always, I am most thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both physically and spiritually, allowing me to return to this sport that I love, and for yet another safe ride, without any mechanicals or flats.

Summer Arrived. Most Daylight of the Year. Another Excessive Heat Warning. Biked Early.

Texbiker.net Posted on June 21, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 21, 2023

Summer arrived today with the sun reaching its northernmost extent and the most daytime of the year, 14 hours, 3 minutes, and 31 seconds. But who’s counting. There is another excessive heat warning today and I wanted to start today’s bike ride earlier to get finished before he heat hit its maximum. My Cervelo Caledonia is still waiting to be fixed and rotating my other bikes I chose the Lynskey Helix for today’s bike ride. The route, Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst, is a shorter version of the Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd I biked on June 14th. I usually ride the longer route and the last time I rode today’s route was April 10th. Looking at the ride history the predominate bike is the Lynskey Helix. I didn’t start as early as yesterday but only 13 minutes later rolling away at 8:48 AM. I might’ve started a couple of minutes earlier but the Bolt computer downloaded a firmware update and took a couple of minutes to install and restart. Checking the firmware release notes there isn’t a mention about fixing the watts display but I didn’t have the problem on today’s ride. A couple of days ago I changed the front page display field from 3 sec avg watts to gear selection. I figured since the Bolt recorded the watts even when it was displayed I would change the field to gear selection and not bother stopping to restart the Bolt which didn’t fix the problem sometimes.

6-21-2023 SportTracks Ride History Community Drive-Cumberland-Oakhurst

The tree limb that blocked the greenbelt trail along Northpark Drive was gone today. I changed the route adding the short loop through Brooklyn Trails and continuing to Eagle Drive on the US59 northbound frontage road instead of riding the TX 99 frontage road to Loop 494 and returning back to US59 on the west bound TX 99 frontage road. Eagle Drive took me to Loop 494, tuning right and then to the TX 99 west bound frontage road. The rest of the route was the usual streets. I finished the ride at 11:34 AM after riding 35.05 miles. The week now totals 101.58 miles and the month 666.5 miles. I need 134 miles to reach my goal for June.

While I rode north I lost the Strava local legend on The Library Sprint to Cindy Brittain. She rode 35 times versus my 34 times. I don’t know if I’ve seen Cindy on a ride.

Weather during the ride: Start 86 degrees, 77% humidity, dew point 77.7, partly cloudy, wind 5 mph; Finish 93 degrees, 62% humidity, dew point 78, a few clouds, wind W 6 mph.

Amazon delivered the new ICAN Cycling Alpha 46 Pro carbon wheels for the Canyon Endurace yesterday. This afternoon I will apply the rim strips, tubes, tires, disc brake rotors, and cassette. If all goes well I will ride the Canyon tomorrow.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation raising money for Palo Duro Canyon equipment

By Kristin Rodin | www.newschannel10.com

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation is raising money to help achieve Palo Duro Canyon State Park’s centennial wish for specialized equipment.

Palo Duro Canyon is looking to add bike repair stations and specialized gear for search and rescue operations.

Since mountain biking is a popular activity at the park, bikers would benefit from bike repair stations that include common repair tools, a pump for tires and a rack to hold a bike for easy repairs, according to a press release.

Specialized equipment would also help search and rescue operations for mountain biking and other accidents. Searches can occur in areas that require high-angle rescue gear, and park staff say additional specialized gear will greatly improve their search and rescue capabilities and potentially save lives.

The park has a fundraising goal of $9,000, and any …

Out And Back Before The Excessive Heat Arrived

Texbiker.net Posted on June 20, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 20, 2023

I bumped up the start time for today’s bike ride by almost two hours to finish before the excessive heat time arrived. Back on the Canyon Endurace CF7 bike for the ride with the 35mm wide tires. Riding my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route I began at 8:35 AM and finished at 11:27 AM. I didn’t expect to see other cyclists being a weekday but I passed several on the ride. I think I got most of them in the video. This was the 8th time biking this route this year. Today’s 34.38 miles put June’s total miles at 631.44 leaving 169 miles to my goal. I modified the route route to avoid a tree limb blocking the greenbelt by Northpark Drive keeping the distance the same but mixing up the streets until I reached Bear Branch Village in the early part of the ride.

6-20-2023 SportTracks 2023 Ride History Atascocita-Walden-Huffman

The 35mm tires take extra effort getting up to speed but when I stop pedaling the coast down seems to go farther. They absorb a lot of the bumps probably due to the width and lower pressure. Toe overlap is a problem though on the turns. I changed out the original Fizik saddle to the Velo look a like saddle that came on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. Cervelo saddle is more comfortable. It appears the new Alpha 46 wheels will arrive sooner than I expected.

Weather: Start 84 degrees, 81% humidity, dew point 77.7, mostly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; Finish 91 degrees, 64% humidity, dew point 77.6, partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Excessive Heat Warning Issued: 2:40 AM Jun. 20, 2023 – National Weather Service

...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CDT THIS
EVENING...

* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to
117.

* WHERE...Portions of south central and southeast Texas.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM CDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Extreme heat and humidity will significantly
increase the potential for heat related illnesses,
particularly for those working or participating in outdoor
activities.
