About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

‘Carry the Load’ relay cyclist discusses group’s journey and the mission behind it

KVUE | www.youtube.com

The mission of the nonprofit "Carry the Load" is to raise awareness for Memorial Day by honoring fallen heroes. Some of the participants who will make their way through Central Texas on Tuesday will be riding bikes.

Cyclist Tom Wendling joined KVUE Daybreak to discuss the group’s journey so far.

Texas 4000: Ride for a Reason

By Ava Motes | alcalde.texasexes.org

It seemed like just yesterday that Selle James, a third-year journalism major, walked into her first Monday night meeting for Texas 4000 for Cancer, where the posted countdown to her Summer 2023 ride read over 500 days. But as Day Zero drew nearer, James says she could see the passage of time—not in the months she spent preparing for departure, but in her immense growth as a biker, leader, and cancer advocate since she became an official Texas 4000 rider in December 2021.

Texas 4000 for Cancer is a UT-based organization supporting cancer research and prevention through a 4000-mile summer bike ride from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska. As the longest charity bike ride in the world, Texas 4000 raises thousands of dollars each year, which is then distributed to cancer research initiatives and other …

The ultimate goal is to have a hike and bike trail that connects Midland and Odessa.

MIDLAND, Texas — An agreement on the new Wildcatters Trail was made during a Midland City Council meeting Tuesday.

The trail is a partnership between the cities of Midland and Odessa, University of Texas Permian Basin and Midland County for a 19-mile hike and bike trail, connecting Midland and Odessa.

Parkwood homeowners in Harlingen oppose trail project; argue third phase would cut into backyards

By Fernando Del Valle | myrgv.com

HARLINGEN — Some Parkwood subdivision homeowners are standing up against the city’s proposed third phase of the Arroyo Colorado Hike and Bike Trail, arguing the 6-foot-wide asphalt strip would cut across parts of their backyards.

For years, Harlingen officials have been planning to build a 1.1-mile stretch from McKelvey Park to Hugh Ramsey Nature Park as part of a project aimed at connecting the city’s trail system.

Last month, City Commissioner Michael Mezmar, who stands against the project, told commissioners officials have proposed the …

Harris County Precinct 3 Rethinking Edgewater Park

by Bob Rehak | reduceflooding.com

There’s been a lot of water under the I-69 bridge since Harris County acquired the old privately owned Edgewater Park on the San Jacinto West Fork almost five years ago.

The county intended to start construction of a new bigger, better, public park with more amenities in 2019. The idea: turn floodway and floodplain land into a community asset that would improve the community without exacerbating flooding.

Reportedly, however, pushback from Forest Cove residents over rerouting parts of Hamblen Road delayed the project. Then the City of Houston pushed back, too, on permitting for some buildings. Then came redistricting wars, budget battles, and a public-input session to determine what the community wants in Edgewater Park. Let’s first look at some pictures of the park and then review the new features. …

The Houston Parks Board is working with Harris County Precinct 3 to develop the West Fork Greenway and connect it to the Spring Creek Greenway. The map below shows the trail it will take from Woodland Hills Drive to the freeway. …

35 For The Goal On The Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive Route

Texbiker.net Posted on May 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 23, 2023

The day to reach my mileage goal for May arrived. I needed 32 miles and I chose the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route which averages about 35 miles. Pausing stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia with about 18km to go I got ready. I mounted my Cervelo Caledonia bike, pressed start at 9:49 AM and rolled out. The 32 mile point came when I was back in Kingwood on Kings Crossing Drive with about 3 miles to the finish. I ended the ride at 12:25 PM riding 35.36 miles and May now totals 753.63 miles. I’ll be off my bike for several days to the end of May and reaching my goal early was good.

Seven starred Strava segments on today’s route. No new records but they helped me get the overall average speed up to 14.1 mph. Light wind and low 80’s made for a pleasant ride. The humidity and dew point were lower than usual for Houston. I used the 35×13 gears the most time, 1:37:17 (24.1 miles) and made 25 rear derailleur shifts according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. My legs felt a little heavy today maybe from yesterday’s ride.

For sometime the rear cassette gears emitted a click as I moved the chain. I thought the chain and gears might be wearing but yesterday I made a “micro adjustment” to the rear derailleur spacing from 17 to 15 and the sound is not there anymore. I should’ve thought this earlier. Instead I lubed the chain.

Alkek Velodrome Update

Stuart Gardner, Program Director | shoutout.wix.com

We nearly got a night of racing in on Tuesday but again weather had other plans, this Tuesday is a week off but hopefully things will dry up for TNR on May 30th and our next big weekend on June 3rd & 4th. The next 2 weeks of the YCL are also coming in June, registration is open! Check the Calendar for more!

Facility/Race Schedule Update

HPARD has informed me that they will be getting us a new transformer however the timeline for this is not clear. Basically they have to be able to find one for a ‘reasonable price’ and once they do they will arrange for it to be installed.

While we wait I am going to start running a flexible race schedule so if a rider who has pre-registered and is not there the race they are in will be the last on the rotation and maybe a longer race will be up first so listen out for that on race nights! …

‘Excitement On a Well Beaten Path’ Southern Tier East to West

By S. Crocker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Sanderson TX – Marathon TX

Monday May 22, 2023 I could tell the day was here by how bright it is on my tent. Fortunately no rain. (I couldn’t check because Verizon has no service out here and I’ve been without cellular for a couple days… the horror! Lol!)

Packed up the tent and gear and blazed a trail down to the quick stop. Lots of gas stations have a deli in them that specializes in tacos and this was true for this one as well. I bought 53 miles worth of breakfast tacos, biggest coffee they have, chugged the coffe and a taco then loaded the rest into the bags and hit the road.

Today was mostly sun and desert scrub brush. Nice riding, but when you can see your destination for two hours, well, where the mystery in that? ?

I actually watched a thunderstorm begin from scratch while riding across the big plane today. After I got into Marathon, it delivered!

Old Roads, New Combination Closed The Gap To May’s Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on May 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 22, 2023

Today’s bike ride was on roads I use but not in this combination. I wanted to ride at least 35 miles but I wasn’t sure if the route would get there but it did. I created a new route name, FM1485 – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd. Its similar to my Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd route. The differences began in Kingwood, Woodridge Forest, and riding north to FM 1485 instead of turning at TX 99. I rolled out at 10:09 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia and finished at 1:08 PM. I started later after doing some yard work but no delay from the Giro D’Italia because it is a rest day for them.

5-22-2023-Cervelo-Caledonia-Valley-Ranch-Parkway-1
5-22-2023-Cervelo-Caledonia-Valley-Ranch-Parkway-1

The weather was delightful. A modest wind, sunshine, low humidity and dew point. In the sun it still felt comfortable. A gentle headwind let me pedal with less effort. There were 5 starred Strava segments during the route. I contested 3 but no personal record results but my overall average speed hit 14.8 mph for awhile. I claimed the Strava Local Legend on Shell – Stripes Cruise riding NW on FM 1314.

Recently at the start of a ride my Bolt computer does not show the 3 sec average watts. Before riding today I powered up the Bolt, connected the sensors, powered it off and then restarted it. I don’t know if that had any affect but the watts showed for the whole ride.

I rode 38.83 miles closing the gap to my 750 mile goal for May to 32 miles. Tuesday will be my last ride for several days so I want to hit my goal tomorrow.
