About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bridge over Barton Creek would keep bikes off MoPac in Austin

Texbiker.net Posted on September 3, 2007 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 3, 2007

from the Austin American-Statesman (full article)

by Ben Bear

Confusion over the law about riding on the south MoPac in Austin has riders off a stretch around Barton Creek. The plans to build a bridge and some no biking signs have riders confused. Ben gives the background and future directions.

“The city says it wrote rules (not a law) in 1982 making it illegal to ride a bike on certain parts of MoPac. But a 1986 agreement put MoPac regulation back in the state’s hands, the city maintains, thus voiding those rules.

The state disagrees that the 1986 agreement did that but agrees that it is legal to bike on MoPac. But Bob Daigh, the Austin district engineer for the state Transportation Department, said it strongly advises against biking on MoPac anywhere where there isn’t a wide shoulder and that only the strongest, most experienced cyclists should even go there. The signs, he said, will stay up…”

Bike paths may expand through UTEP campus

Texbiker.net Posted on August 29, 2007 by Rick AnkrumAugust 29, 2007

from elpasotimes. com

A proposal for new bike paths in Central El Paso could also mean more bike paths in West Side neighborhoods near the University of Texas at El Paso. During a community meeting Aug. 22, the Sunset Heights Neighborhood Association voted unanimously to support additional bike paths along Yandell Drive in Sunset Heights. The meeting was hosted by South-West city Rep. Beto O’Rourke and the city’s engineering and street departments.
