About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hotter’n Hell 100, Light Wind and Temperature

Texbiker.net Posted on August 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 27, 2022

I left my hotel before 6 AM to get to the starting area for the 100 km ride at Scott St. and 6th Street. The sun wasn’t up but was peeking over the eastern horizon when I found a parking lot on Travis Street. I tried a different bike packing method leaving the rear wheel on my Cervelo Caledonia bike which made it easier to get the bike out and back in after the ride. I think it worked well and I’ll use it the next time. The Cervelo just fit in the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the left rear seat folded forward. This removed the fumbling around with the chain and the rear wheel.

The video shows the area I waited in until the Star Spangle Banner played and the planes from Shepherd Air Force Base flew over the crowd of waiting cyclists on Scott Street. The 100 mile riders started a little after the planes flew over and the pylons for the groups before the 100 km riders were moved out of the way. At 7:25 AM my group moved towards the starting line about a half mile away. We were delayed by two crashes on the bridge beyond the starting line in the groups that started before us. The road surface out of Wichita Falls was concrete with uneven cracks and a few gouges.

Weather conditions: start 72 (humidity 91%, dew point 69), fair, wind SE 5 mph; finish 92 (humidity 46%, dew point 68), a few clouds, wind S 9 mph.

72 degrees at the start felt good and the wind was light at around 5 mph from the SSE which meant an almost tailwind until Iowa Park where the route turned south after the first rest stop which rode by. From Iowa Park the route went south and then west where the rolling hills began. I rode up all of the hills with good power from my legs and I think I only shifted to an easier gearing once or twice. Road surface from Iowa Park to rest stop 2 was asphalt but not rough with a few short sections of chip and seal.

At the second rest stop around mile 21 the route went north. I rode by this rest stop also which had a large crowd of cyclists but traffic was segregated with rest stop people on the left behind some orange cones and through rides on the right. The road surface on FM 2384S became chip and seal but wasn’t too rough from the rest stop to the railroad crossing. That changed dramatically as we crossed US287 on FM 2384N. The surface was full blown rough chip and seal with patches of missing chips. Thankfully the wind was from my right rear quarter as I bounced and vibrated over the road. Mile 31 marked the change from FM 2384N to FM 1739 at rest stop 3 for us but labeled rest stop 12 on the map.

FM 1739 headed east and was smoother than FM 2384 but still chip and seal. Now the wind was the right but not overly strong. I made good headway. Rest stop 4 (aka R13) was around mile 41 and I stopped for fluids and peanut butter cookies (all they had left out of the 3000 they started with the lady said). So far I saw numerous cyclists on the side of the road fixing flats but no crashes thankfully. FM 1739 took us to Burkburnett but on different streets from the 100 mile riders. We went south and east to the southbound frontage road of I-44. The wind was now a headwind and my speed dropped from what I did up to that point.

The frontage road took us by the infamous picnic area along I-44 about a mile north of rest stop where cyclists stopped in the shade as the road was going up but not sharply. Rest stop 5 (aka R14) came at mile 53, site of Panda Biomedical the sign said, but a former GM plant. Rest stop 5 has snowcones and I had a cherry one. I filled my Camelbak for the second time during the ride. With a little over 9 miles left there was one more rest stop at Shepherd Air Force Base around mile 60. From rest stop 5 to the finish the road went south into the headwind which was about 9 mph, light compared to previous years. I didn’t stop at R15 but I rode near the planes and helicopter displayed. Next was airmen alley. There wasn’t as many airmen lining the street but they were loud.

Leaving SAFB the route crossed a road and a bike lane took us south to the turn onto the side streets that took us to Scott Street, turning right from Scott Street to the finish line which I crossed at 12:36 PM.

The volunteers at every rest stop that visited were so friendly and helpful. This is what makes this ride so good.

This is the second time to ride the 100 km route. Strava reported 1 gold PR, 5 silver PR, and 11 bronze PR.

by: Curtis Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Voted the best urban off-road trail in the entire state, the Wee-Chi-Tah Bike Trail saw plenty of action Friday during the off-road ride and run events.

We are less than 24 hours away from the largest 100-mile bike ride in the nation, the 41st Annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred, consisting of multiple events, including the Wee-Chi-Tah Mountain Bike races and runs.

“We’re kind of the stepchildren; we get to come out here and play in the dirt on Fridays, so we’re doing the off-road on our Wee-Chi-Tah Trail that’s out here that everybody can ride throughout the year,” HHH Steering Committee member Michael Boyle said. …

Woman facing multiple charges after striking cyclist with vehicle in South Austin

By FOX 7 Austin Digital Team | www.fox7austin.com

AUSTIN, Texas – A 52-year-old woman has been charged with a third-degree felony after striking a cyclist with her car in South Austin.

According to the arrest affidavit, a University of Texas at Austin police officer was traveling westbound on W SH 71 around 9:59 p.m. on August 22, 2022. The officer noticed a vehicle in front of him unable to stay within a single lane of traffic. The officer turned his dash camera on, and just as the officer began recording, the vehicle in front of him veered out of the lane, striking a male on a bicycle.

The officer and an uninvolved vehicle stopped to render aid to the cyclist. The affidavit states the cyclist was "bleeding in the middle of the state highway."

The responding officer says the vehicle that hit the cyclist, a gray Nissan, …

By Alex Carrion | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Events for the 41st Hotter’N Hell Hundred got underway Thursday and will continue into the weekend. Cycling enthusiasts from all over were excited to attend the HHH consumer show.

The MPEC was packed full of items to get cyclists ready for Saturday. You could find plenty of vendors selling cycling gear and clothing. There were also sports massages, packet pickup, and late registration for those just getting into town.

“Of course, the 100 miles is always an accomplishment you know there’s always a point when I’m out there on the road and it’s stupid,” Bill Frasier, HHH rider, said. “But I’ll get emotional because I’m like, ‘Oh my God I’m doing this. It’s awesome.’”

Riders and enthusiasts could not hold back their excitement while talking about one of the largest bike rides in the nation.

“That sense of accomplishment coming …

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Deputies are investigating a suspected dog attack after a man’s body was found just feet away from his bicycle in the Channelview area early Friday morning.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the body was found at about 1 a.m. with multiple puncture wounds. It is not clear how long the body had been there.

The body appeared to have been dragged away from the bicycle, investigators said. They added that it is not clear how many dogs may have been involved, but that the area is known for packs of stray dogs.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the body was found on Garlang Street near Sheldon Road near some commercial lots after it was spotted by a driver passing by.

www.itemonline.com

The H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum of Texas is set to support and welcome the Texas Brotherhood Ride at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Walker County Storm Shelter.

The Texas Brotherhood ride is an annual bicycle journey across the state to honor first responders who died in the line of duty and provide support to their families.

Tara Burnett of the H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum said there will be a presentation honoring two from Walker County and about 10 riders will be staying in town that night.

Riders must all be first responders and are required to have either a road or tri bike. Just like in their professions, they continue the teamwork aspect during the ride – riding together, eating together and bunking together.

Support personnel are divided into …

HOTTER ‘N HELL FORECAST NOT SO HOT FOR USA’S BIGGEST CYCLING EVENT

Author: John Woodson | granfondodailynews.com

The 41st edition of the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred gran fondo in Texas may not live up to it’s legendary name this year, it may go down as one of the coolest rides in decades.

The weather forecast for Wichita Falls on Saturday 27 August predicts a high of ONLY 90F degrees, in Texas that’s almost cool enough for cyclists to pull on arm warmers and vests when compared to training in temperatures well over 100 degrees for 22 consecutive days in July.

Nonetheless, over 10,000 amateur cyclists will welcome cooler conditions when they line up for a 07:05 start en masse – announced by the firing of a historical military cannon as United States Air Force fighter jets roar above.

The 100 mile relatively flat course (it is Texas after all) combined with …

Investigators determined a woman was riding her bike across S. Collins Street near Hensley Street, when she was hit by an unknown driver traveling southbound on S. Collins Street. The driver did not stop after hitting the bicyclist, police say.

Not The Only Cyclist Out Riding

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2022

Continuing my quest for a 200 mile week I set off on today’s bike ride at 9:01 AM riding my Lynskey Helix bike. The previous rides this week put me in a favorable position with 125 miles before riding today. I chose my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 34.41 miles boosting my week total to 159.79 miles. On Saturday I plan on riding the 100 km route at the HH100 and go over 200 miles for the week. The “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” is the route I ride the most and this pushed the count up to 22 rides this year. I finished the ride at 11:48 AM. I will not ride Friday and Sunday thus the need to make up for the miles I would usually ride on these days.

At FM1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive 3 cyclists made a right turn onto Atascocita Shores as I sat waiting for the traffic light to change so I could ride east over Lake Houston. They are in the video briefly.

As I rode out of the driveway my GoPro camera fell from the mount landing on the street. I turned around and retrieved it. I did not secure it properly. I thought the camera was okay but when I removed the camera from the mount after the ride I saw the lens cover was cracked. Fortunately it did not show in the video. I contacted GoPro and they are sending a replacement. I expected to pay for it but they are sending the cover at no cost. Thank you GoPro.

The weather had a fall feeling to it with the temperature no higher than 85 until I completed the ride. I used my CamelBak thinking it would heat up more. Weather conditions: 80 (humidity 85%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind N 6 mph; finish 85 (humidity 69%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. The light wind was appreciated when it was a headwind. Going over Lake Houston on the way back I stayed in the 35×13 gears into the headwind.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report told me I used the 35×13 gears 1:36:41 but there were a few times when I should’ve shifted to the 35×15 and didn’t.
