About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclocross course for bike riders returns to popular San Antonio park

Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

Attention cyclists! The hidden paradise course at a popular San Antonio park is returning soon. The organizer of SA Cyclocross Rob Kane told MySA that the green tape will be back up starting September 6 at Lady Bird Johnson. It will run every Tuesday until the end of November.

The tape is available for everyone to enjoy and practice during those Tuesday evenings at the Northeast Side park located at 10700 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX 78217. However, Kane said people can register for night races on September 9 and September 23. The Cyclocross season will officially kick off on October 1 and will run through mid-December.

Cyclocross is a non-Olympic sport that can best be described as a cross …

FM 917 from I-35W to BU-287 in Mansfield

www.txdot.com

Project Background

TxDOT is studying the FM 917 improvements project to identify potential solutions to transportation needs along the corridor. The project is located along FM 917 from I-35W to west of Mansfield in Johnson County, a length of approximately 10 miles.

This area of FM 917 does not accommodate current demands on the roadway, nor does it meet current roadway design standards. Today, FM 917 consists of one lane in each direction with no separation, no bicyclist or pedestrian accommodations, and sharp curves, including two 90-degree curves. These curves severely limit the safety and mobility of motorists by blocking views and necessitating drivers to change speed several times along the route. …

“We lost 754 parking spots,” said Chip Filer, executive director of the event.

Filer said the reserved parking and the set up for law enforcement has been rearranged and a shuttle will go between the Bridwell Ag Center the Clymer Exhibit Hall to accommodate the lost space.

“We’re going to hire two tram systems to go out to parking lots around the city to pick folks up and bring them back to the exhibit hall,” Filer said.

He said event leaders have changed the two criterium courses.

“We moved the Sunday Criterium downtown on Ohio Avenue last year. That …

San Antonio disabled veterans roll with adaptive cycling program

René A. Guzman | www.expressnews.com

Retired Army Master Sgt. Edward Garcia sat in a recumbent tricycle with a walking cane on his lap as several fellow wounded warriors pedaled about in similar three-wheeled machines for a morning ride at Southside Lions Park.

Eighteen years ago, Garcia’s world was literally turned upside down when an improvised explosive device flipped the Hummer he was driving in Iraq. Shrapnel from the blast tore through his leg muscles. The impact also damaged his spine and injured his brain. Two members of his crew died in the chaos, one in his arms. The nightmares still haunt him.

“I have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and (was told) to get involved …

Dry Bike Wheel Rolling To Freshly Filled Sikes Lake

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

Today, on the next to last Wednesday of the 2022 version of August, my bike took me, eventually, to Sikes Lake, where I was pleased to see the Sikes Lake Bayou, which you see above, and the rest of Sikes Lake, back at its full pool glory.

The temperature was in the low 80s when I did the wheel rolling, with little wind, and some clouds blocking the sun, at times. Quite pleasant weather conditions for outdoor activity.

Last Saturday I was at Sikes Lake when …

Pushing To Reach 200 Miles This Week

Texbiker.net Posted on August 24, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 24, 2022

In my push to reach 200 miles for the week with missing two days of riding I decided to ride a route to the north through Woodbranch Village. I’ve only rode this route once before according to my SportTracks log August 4th, 2021. The route goes north along US59, through Tavola, crossing Roman Forest Blvd. and into Woodbranch on Linnwood Drive. I used the Bolt computer map to find my way to Woodbranch Drive. I should have rode on Linnwood Drive because the Woodbranch Drive road surface was littered with cracks and depressions in the asphalt. I survived that street and turned left onto Railroad Ave. riding south, the opposite direction I usually ride. From there the route followed streets I ride frequently.

8-24-2022 Ride History Porter-Woodbranch-Valley Ranch

I started at 9:01 AM and finished at 12:08 PM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I was concerned about finishing before the rain described in the forecast arrived but I finished without any rain. It arrived about 1:45 after I was back home. The cloud cover held the temperature down in the 80’s but very humid. Wind stayed steady at 7 mph from the west. It was strong enough that I used the 35×15 gears from FM 1485 to FM 1314. At that point I shifted to 35×13 with the trees blocking some of the wind and the road changing direction through Briar Tree and Oakhurst. Weather conditions: start 80 (humidity 84%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph; finish 87 (humidity 76%, dew point (78), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. Today’s 37.79 miles increased my week total to 125.37 miles. I plan on riding tomorrow to get closer to 200 miles and then ride the 100 km route at the HH100 on Saturday.

Reviewing the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 35×13 gears 1:32:25 (22.5 miles) and the 35×15 gears 56:34 (11 miles) out of the total moving time of 2:49:44. The RD made 19 shifts.

Early in the ride I recorded a Strava PR on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:32).

"Grava del Fuego:" Gravel bike ride rounds out HHH bicycle races

Cecil Witherspoon | www.timesrecordnews.com

It’s described as a laid-back race, but few bike rides have a more dramatic name than Grava del Fuego.

Changed The Route On The Fly

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2022 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2022

When I rolled out on today’s bike ride I planned to ride my “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route but then I thought about extending it to Peters Road and as I rode over Lake Houston I changed to the my “Stroker Road – Huffman” route to maximize the miles. I left at 9:13 AM, a couple minutes later than yesterday and finished at 12:35 PM almost 20 minutes earlier than yesterday for a 43.88 mile long ride which was slightly longer than yesterday’s ride on the Spring Creek Greenway. I forgot to mention that yesterday my Lynskey Helix bike crossed the 1,000 mile point with 1,016 miles since I received in late May. Today I rode my Cervelo Caledonia and it is approaching 4,000 miles at 3,975 miles since I bought it in February. I checked SportTracks for the week of HH100 last year and saw that I rode this route then too.

I’ve rode the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route 3 times this year, all on the Cervelo Caledonia bike. Today’s ride was the longest and the fastest average speed. Today the maximum average speed was 14.2 mph. To get the extra distance I changed the streets in the first 2 miles so before getting to W. Lake Houston Parkway I was ahead of the typical distance but only slightly.

8-23-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-Stroker Road-Huffman
8-23-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-Stroker Road-Huffman

The weather forecast toned down the rain threat influencing my decision to extend the ride. The temperature was low enough for me to leave the CamelBak at home and rely on a waterbottle. I stopped at the Chevron station in Huffman to refill the bottle on the way back to Kingwood. It didn’t reach 90 by the time I finished, a pleasant change from earlier in August. Humidity was 99% at the start producing a cooling effect until I warmed up when it changed to a sauna feeling and soaked kit clothing when I ended the bike ride. Weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 99%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy, wind W 5 mph; finish 87 (humidity 69%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph.

The favorable weather and light wind aided my utilizing the 35×13 gears for 2:08:55 (30.9 miles) but I changed to 35×15 riding west over Lake Houston out in the open with the headwind. Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report for more data. Interesting that this report shows the ride distance to be 44.1 miles, longer than Strava’s by 2/10’s of a mile. Usually the distance agrees with Strava.
