About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

From Doubtful To On The Lynskey Helix Outside

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2022

When I woke up this morning it didn’t look like a bike ride day but by mid morning it looked better. While I waited I watched stage 1 of the Tour de France and stage of the Giro d’Italia Donne. My home weather station recorded 1.58″ of rain that ended around 10:30. Just in case I check Zwift for upcoming events but didn’t sign up for any. By 12:16 PM the streets dried enough to begin biking. I chose my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route going north away from the remaining spots of rain. For the second time this week I rode my Lynskey Helix bike.

Today marked the 6th ride on the route in 2022 split among 3 different bikes. I rode 32.39 miles to get July off to a good start towards my 800 mile goal for the month. For the week I am up to 181.32 miles. If the weather cooperates on Saturday I should reach 200+ for the week.

It was very humid with 99% at the start and 94% when I finished at 2:47 PM. The temperature maxed out at 78 at the end of the ride. When I went inside after finishing my bike cloths felt like I went swimming, dripping moisture. The dew point stayed close to the temperature too adding to the wet feeling. Weather overview: start 75 (humidity 99%, dew point 74), cloudy, wind NE 7 mph; finish 78 (humidity 94%, dew point 76), overcast, wind E 5 mph. It should return to hot by Sunday.

Link to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. A modest 17 RD shifts and 1:41:57 riding time in the 33×13 gear combination.

This chart compares the YTD miles for the years 2010 to 2022. I can’t seem to get 2022 miles above 2021 and 2020 but I’m trying.

Video: Hotter’N Hell looking for host homes for visiting riders

By KAUZ Digital Media Team | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The Hotter’N Hell Hundred is less than two months away and thousands of riders are set to participate in the event, many of whom will need a place to stay once they get in town.

Executive director Chip Filer said the Hotter’N Hell cyclists fill up hotels within a 100-mile radius of Wichita Falls.

“If you have an extra bedroom or bedroom suite and want to host a couple of riders, sign up on the home page,” Filer said. “We’ll get a hold of you. We’ll find some riders that are looking for a place to stay and we’ll match them up with you. Quite frankly, you’ll probably build friendships for life.”

Hotter’N Hell was also …

Which Is Better For Biking, High Humidity Or Rain? I Got A Dose Of High Humidity

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 30, 2022

The last bike ride of June started at 9:28 AM as I rode away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose my “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for the second time in 2022. I thought I biked it more than twice though. The previous ride was on May 31st also riding my Cervelo Caledonia. Today I rode 35.6 miles just slightly more than the previous ride. I ended June at 997.8 miles and only missing one day on the bike. This is the second most miles in a month this year.

A summary of June bike rides. I averaged 34.41 miles per ride. As flat as Houston is I gained 12,635 ft for the month according to RWGPS but I don’t think that is correct. 74 hours biking looks good. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia 19 times and my Lynskey Helix 10 times.

6-30-2022 June Bike Rides Summary

When I started the ride I wasn’t sure if I would be able to go the full route. Rain on the radar hung around the coast and a few stray drops fell for maybe 30 seconds before I left. At the least I wanted to ride 10 miles to make it an “official” ride. Thankfully the rain held off but the high humidity made me wonder if rain would’ve been better. At the 12:12 PM finish sweat ran down my arm sleeves, my gloves were soaked and my jersey and shorts dripped with sweat. This was the first bike ride in awhile with the temperature in the 70’s for both the start and finish. Maybe the heat and lower humidity wasn’t so bad after all. The weather for the bike ride: start 76 (humidity 94%, dew point 74), partly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph; finish 78 (humidity 87%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind E 11 mph. Rain is expected late tonight and Friday.

How I used the Rival eTap components during the bike ride according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report.
